听力原文: In an attempt to resist the rising cost of fuel and fight the pollution choking our cities, many outgoing students have taken to riding bicycles to school. The unfortunate result of this otherwise positive trend is the traffic problems caused by bicycles having to share the road with cars. Unfortunately, traffic accidents involving bicycles are on the increase throughout the country, so this new solution has led to a dilemma.

To solve this dilemma, special bike paths have been created on most roads leading to and from college campuses. It is essential that cyclists stay on those paths. It is necessary for the safety of those of you who ride bicycles as well as the motorists that you share the road with.

Obviously, it may be inconvenient to ride in the bike paths at times, but we must insist on it. To enforce the necessity of staying on the paths, there are fines for bicyclists who ride down the middle of the street. The federal fines are currently running at $ 25 for a first time violation, but if the law is continually violated, the fines will increase by different amounts depending on your local ordinances.

The money that is collected from the fines will go towards a fund to help build better bike paths. You may have special bicycle bridges in your neighborhood right now. If not, you can count on seeing them in the future. We are committed to making bicycling a safe alternative to using cars and we appreciate your help in making that goal a reality.

What is the latest problem facing people who drive to school?

A.Pollution in the air.

B.A lack of parking.

C.Accidents with bicycles.

D.A lack of bridges.

听力原文: Some of the most practical lessons coming out of research in psychology are in the area of memory. People ask, why can't I remember that term from the physics chapter or that the library books are due?

For many people, memory may be weak, because they don't use it enough. It's like a muscle. If you don't exercise it, it won't get strong. That's why it's important to keep our mind active, to keep on learning throughout our life. We can do this by reading, playing memory games and seeking out new experiences. It's my guess, though, that the lack of stimulation isn't a problem for students like you. More likely, the lives you live are so busy and stimulating that this in itself may sometimes interfere with learning. Later on I will discuss how information is recalled from memory. But, first, the information needs to be recorded, in other words, learned. And for busy people like you and me, that is where the real problem often lies. If we are distracted, or we are trying to think what we are going to do next, the incoming message just might not be getting recorded effectively. And that leads to the first tip for students who want to improve their memories. Give your full attention to the information you hope to retain. Research clearly shows the advantages of this, and also of active learning, of consciously trying to visualize a new fact, perhaps to make a mental picture, even a wild ridiculous one, so the new fact will stick in our memory. Let me illustrate that for you here a little more concretely this evening.

A.Factors that affect the ability to memorize]

B.The influence of childhood memories on adulthood.

C.A proposal for future psychological research.

D.Benefits of a busy lifestyle.

More About Alzheimer's Disease

Scientists have developed skin tests that may be used in the future to identify people with Alzheimer's disease and may ultimately allow physicians to predict who is at risk of getting this neurological disorder.

The only current means of diagnosing the disease in a living patient is a long and expensive series of tests that eliminate every other cause of dementia.

"Since Alois Alzheimer described the disease nearly a century ago, people have been trying to find a way to accurately diagnose it in its early stages," said Patricia Grady, acting director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland. "This discovery, if confirmed, could prove a big step forward in our efforts to deal with and understand the disease."

Alzheimer's is the single greatest cause of mental deterioration in older people, affecting between 2.5 million and 4 million people in the United States alone. The devastating disorder gradually destroys memory and the ability to function, and eventually causes death. There is currently no known treatment for the disease.

Researches discovered that the skin cells of Alzheimer's patients have defects that interfere with their ability to regulate the flow of potassium in and out of the cells. The fact that the cell defects are present in the skin suggests that Alzheimer's results from physiological changes throughout the body, and that dementia may be the first noticeable effect of these changes as the defects affect the cells in the brain, scientists said.

The flow of potassium is especially critical in cells responsible for memory formation. The scientists also found two other defects that affect the cells' supply of calcium, another critical element.

One test developed by researchers calls for growing skin cells in a laboratory culture and then testing them with an electrical detector to determine if the microscopic tunnels that govern the flow of potassium are open. Open potassium channels create a unique electrical signature.

A spokesman for the Alzheimer's association said that if the validity of the diagnostic test can be proven it would be important development, but cautioned that other promising tests for Alzheimer's have been disappointing.

The newly developed skin tests may be used in the future to allow doctors to ______.

A.cure those with Alzheimer's disease

B.discover the cause of Alzheimer's disease

C.predict who might get Alzheimer's disease

D.find the consequences of Alzheimer's disease

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: Picture the most beautiful face you have ever seen. Then ask yourself what it is about that face that makes it so lovely. That question may be difficult to answer. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But is it possible to explain the beauty of a human face using math?

According to many scholars throughout history, the answer could be yes. Most very attractive faces have proportions consistent with what is known as the "golden ratio." This ratio can best be understood by thinking of it as a rectangle. In a golden rectangle, the long side is 1.618 times longer than the short side. Therefore, the value of the golden ratio is equal to 1.618. The proportions of the golden rectangle are thought to reflect perfect symmetry. If we frame. a gorgeous face inside of a golden rectangle, the dimensions of each will correspond perfectly. The face is beautiful because it is symmetrical.

Amazingly, the golden ratio is found in many manifestations of beauty—not just in beautiful faces. The dimensions of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt conform. to the golden ratio. And the famous Greek Parthenon contains many golden rectangles. Moreover, the famous fifteenth-century Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, deliberately used the golden ratio in his paintings. Not surprisingly, the face of da Vinci's Mona Lisa matches the golden rectangle.

What's the characteristic of most attractive faces?

A.There is no answer.

B.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

C.Most of attractive faces look like Mona Lisa.

D.Most attractive faces have golden ratio.
