THE PAINTING

0 In the village where I grew up, everyone knew an old man

00 who spent all of his time with painting. People who lived in the

village used to be admire his work and he often gave paintings

to friends of his. If they offered him money, he would never

take it because he said he painted for a pleasure. He gave one of

the paintings to my father, who actually wasn't very interested

in art. One day when I was playing, I came across from it in the

bin outside our house. I have hid it in our garage where my father

couldn't find it because I really would liked it, and then I forgot

all about it. Since years later I found it again. By that time the

old man had been died and people had started to recognise his

paintings as great works of art. They were now worth a lot of

money. An art gallery made me an offer of £5,000 for this

painting and I nearly sold it, but then I decided not to do. When

I look at the painting held hanging on the wall of my sitting-room,

it reminds to me of my childhood, and of the man who could

have been so much rich but didn't really want to make money.

Somepeoplehateeverythingthatismodern.Theycannotimaginehowanyonecanreallylikemodernmusic;th

Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like modern music; they

find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom

have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for

perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient

with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in materials original

ways. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can

only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist’s failure concerns himself alone, but if

it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does

sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can’t judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient

buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn

from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to

imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

Some people hate everything that is modern because _______.

A. they are aged

B. they find it hard to accept modern things

C. they take their standards of perfection from the Greek

D. they look at things by the standards of the past

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The Royal Academy of Arts, or as it is often abbreviated, the RA, was founded in 1768 by a group of artists headed by portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. Under Reynolds, the Academy functioned as a school aimed at teaching drawing, painting, and sculpture to young artists. The Academy had its roots in private English schools of art popular in the early part of the 18th century. Academy classes were provided free of charge, and scholarships were available to help needy students and to provide opportunities to pursue studies abroad. Lacking royal funding, the Academy survived by charging attendance fees for public exhibitions of work by members. The Royal Academy has extended its mandate over the years since its founding. Now, in addition to teaching classes, the RA hosts regular exhibitions of art work drawn from around the world. As such, it is one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world, and it continues its instruction of approximately 60 young and aspiring artists each year. Although the RA has been criticized in the past for its conservative approach, it remains one of the most influential teaching and exhibition centres of the art world.

Who found the Royal Academy of Arts?

A.A few students.

B.A few teachers.

C.A group of artists.

D.A private English school.
