Books are steadily increasing in size: the average number of pages has grown by 25% over the last 15 years. A study of more than 2500 books appearing on New York Times bestseller reveals that the average length has increased from 320 pages in 1999 to 400 pages in 2014. According to James Finlayson, who carried out the survey, there ’s a “relatively consistent pattern of grow th year on year ”. For Finlayson, much of this shift can be explained by the industry ’s shift towards digital. He says “When you pick up a large book in a shop, you can sometimes be intimidated, but if you have a big book on a Kindle (eBook ), that’s not a consideration. ”

听力原文: Since the outbreak of WWI, Einstein was opposed to war, and used his notoriety to lecture against it during the 1920s and 1930s. With the rise of National Socialism in Germany in the early 1930s, Einstein's position became difficult. Although he was a renewed German citizen, the two social movements which received his full support were Pacifism and Zionism. When Hitler came to power, Einstein decided to leave Germany for the United States in anticipation of Nazi persecution. He took a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, while he continued public support of Pacifist and Zionist goals which made him the target of vicious attacks by anti-semitic and right-wing elements in Germany. In addition he was demanded as a speaker and wrote extensively on many topics, especially on peace. The growing fascism and anti-semiticism of Hitler's regime convinced Einstein to sign his name to a letter written by American physicist Leo Szilard informing President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the possibility of an atomic bomb. This letter led the formation of the Manhattan Project for the world's first nuclear weapons. Einstein himself did not participate in the project. We can only assume that this was due to ethical concerns.

Why did Einstein leave Germany when Hitler came to power?

A.Because he had been persecuted all the time.

B.Because he anticipated Nazi persecution.

C.Because he wanted to go to support Zionism.

D.Because he was in a very difficult position.

听力原文: There are people in Italy who can't stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey.
A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball." Baseball, to them, means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits, standing around in a field, staring away, while very little of anything happens". They tell you it's a game better suited to the 19(上标)th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there's the sport that glorifies" the hit".

By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still. On TV the game is broken into a dozen perspectives, replays, close-ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will study the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won't do it for you.

The skeptic and innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious combination of notes, chores and responses.

(33)

A.The different tastes of people for sports.

B.The different characteristics of sports.

C.The attraction of football.

D.The attraction of baseball.

听力原文: Healthy people with stressful jobs who work long hours but get little satisfaction from what they do have twice the risk of dying from heart disease as satisfied employees, according to a study. Job stress has been known to trigger heart problems in people who already have cardiovascular disease. Obesity, high blood pressure, lack of exercise and smoking contribute to heart disease. Study indicates that job stress also plays an important role. Workers who had the highest job-related stress levels were more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to the study published in the British Medical Journal.

Work stress involves too much work as well as a lack of satisfaction and feeling undervalued and unappreciated. Many people work long hours but if the effort is rewarding the stress is minimized. Job pressure is damaging when being overworked is combined with little of no control, unfair supervision and few career opportunities. The British Heart Foundation said the results support earlier research showing that people in jobs with low control, such as manual workers, could be at greater risk of heart disease than other employees. "It is advisable for people to try to minimize levels of stress at work and for employers to allow people to have more control at work and to be rewarded for their success," the foundation said in a statement.

Which of the following will NOT possibly lead to heart disease?

A.High blood pressure.

B.Oversleeping.

C.Smoking and being overweight.

D.Job stress.
