The resources of the library can be helpful even when we are doing something very informal
, such as trying to devise a better way to measure attitudes toward music or looking for a better way to teach mathematics. The library can be equally helpful when we are doing something very formal, such as writing a dissertation (学位论文) or preparing an article for publication in a professional journal. In either case, our goal should be to use the library as a useful tool to help us understand and solve our problem. The following sections of this chapter will describe specific resources available in many libraries. In some cases you may be completely unfamiliar with a resource. Your goal should the to become aware of what is available and to know how to use each of these resources to help you solve the problem they are designed to solve. When educators have a piece of information that they want to share with their colleagues, they often make this information available in professional journals or at professional meetings. It would often be useful to have access to such information, and this chapter will describe the special services that enable us to locate such information. The library resources can be helpful when we __________ .

A. want to find a better way to measure attitudes toward music

B. are preparing a paper for a professional journal

C. are writing a dissertation

D. All of the above

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue
to undertake to do for children that which only children do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity; it can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. "

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ______.

A.it is one of the most difficult school courses

B.students spend endless hours in reading

C.reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

D.too much time is spent in teaching about reading

Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 287 BC and h
e died in the year 212 BC.

Archimedes is most well-known for one specific idea that he came up with. "Archimedes's Principle" states that a solid object which is immersed in a liquid is pushed up by a force which is equal to the weight of the water that the object moves. For example, if you put a piece of wood and a piece of gold the same size in water, only the wood will float. Both the wood and gold move the same amount of water, but the wood weighs less than this water, while the gold weighs more.

It is believed that Archimedes discovered this principle when the king of Syracuse asked him to solve a problem. The king wanted to know if his crown was pure gold or a mixture of gold and silver. The king, of course, did not melt his crown to find out. The idea came to Archimedes as he lowered himself into his bath. He noticed how the water spilled out of the tub. He decided to use the same idea for the crown. He knew that a gold crown immersed in water would weigh more than one made of silver. The experiment was done and the goldsmith was proved guilty of trying to cheat the king.

A good title for the selection is______.

A.Archimedes

B.Archimedes's Principle

C.A Gold and Silver Crown

D.The King of Syracuse

The age of space science began less than thirty years ago. But already people have mad
e great discoveries and have done exciting things. They have walked in space, visited the moon, and lived in space laboratories for long periods of time. Some scientists are now working on ways to make it possible for people to live on other planets. They are trying to solve problems of living in space, even though they don’t yet know what all of the problems will be. For example, they don’t’ yet know what problems people would have if they loved being weightless for several years.

If you were a space traveler you might have to spend several months, or even years, in a spaceship. While you were in the ship you wouldn’t live as you usually do. You might have to find new ways to spend your time. Your body would have to adjust to different conditions. And you would have some problems that you never think about here on earth. You also would need fresh water and a way to get rid of waste. In fact, there would be many problems to solve in order to live in space.
