M: Hi, Susan] Oh, no! Of course not! I give up driving to work. Instead, I ride to my working place.

W: Why is that?

M: You see. There is only a stone's throw from my home to my working place. I think riding a bike to work is more convenient.

W: I don't think so. It will take you at least 25 minutes to get to our company from here.

M: Yes, sometimes, 30 minutes. But I love riding to work now. It is a totally different picture on my way to work.

W: Why do you think so?

M: You see, every morning, after I set off for work, I can breathe the new fresh air along the way. By the time I reach my office, I feel rather revived. I even don't rely on coffee to spend my morning hours.

W: Is it so magical?

M: At least, that's how I feel about riding to work. I can't believe I have wasted so much fresh morning air in the past 3 years!

W: Will you continue riding to work in the future?

M: I think so.

Two years ago, my husband bought me a bike. If you live in a town, it is often faster
than a car and you don't have to worry about parking. You leave it anywhere. As it has a seat at the back and a basket at the front, I can take my little daughter to school, to the library, to the shops, to anywhere.

I use it most in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter when it is cold and the rain is heavy.

You must, of course, be careful on a bicycle. Accidents are not the only problem, though. One day I went shopping and came back to find my front wheel missing. It was a long walk to the bicycle shop. Now I have three strong locks.

My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for short journeys. He says it is better than waiting for a bus. He still uses his car for longer journeys, but I think that all day's sitting down is making him fat and lazy. On my bicycle I get a lot of exercises and fresh air, and this makes me feel a lot younger.

William, who conquered England some 930 years ago, had wealth, power and a ruthless army.
Yet although William was stupefyingly rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing remotely resembling a flush toilet. No paper towels, no riding lawn mower. How did he get by?

History books are filled with wealthy people who were practically destitute compared to me, I have tripe-tracked storm window; Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn't buy cat food in bulk. Czar Nicholas Ⅱ lacked a compound-miter saw.

Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you'd think I'd be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my prosperity with that of living persons: neighbors, high-school classmates, TV personalities. The covetousness I feel toward my friend Howard's kitchen is not mitigated by the fact that no French monarch ever had a refrigerator with glass doors.

There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different stuff to feel grumpy about. You'd think that merely not having bubonic plague(腺鼠疫) would put us in a good mood. But no, we want a hot tub too.

Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by contemporary standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers', but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife's and I can keep clean. Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, those bankers' fancy counter tops and my own worn Formica(福米加塑料桌面)will seem equally shabby. I can't keep up with my neighbor right now. but just wait.

Which of the following was possessed by the King William Ⅰ?

A.Flush toilet

B.Ruthless army

C.Paper towels

D.Riding lawn mower

听力原文:M: Hi, Mary.

W: Hi, Thomas. What's happening?

M: Well, I've decided I have to get a car.

W: You're going to buy a car? Do you really need one? I'd probably still be driving except that my car broke down last yean Instead of getting another one, I just moved closer to the university and went back to riding a bike—better for the environment, better for my health and 1 save a lot of money.

M: Did it really cost that much?

W: Well, when you think of insurance, rising petrol costs, parking plus maintenance and repairs, it adds up.

M: I know it's going to be expensive but I really need my own transport. It takes half an hour by bus each way to university as it is. But now I'm working at night in the city. There's no way I want to hang around waiting for a bus late at night and then walk 3 blocks home alone.

W: Hey, I think you've got a point there. So what kind of car are you looking at?

M: It's a 90 Ford. The owner is asking $2000.

W: That's pretty old. How many kilometers has it done?

M: Oh, I forgot to ask. I'll have to check tonight when I go to see it. Would you be able to come with me to have a look at it? At about 7 o'clock?

W: Sure I will, but I don't know a lot about cars. I do know one thing, though. I wouldn't buy an old car without having a mechanic look at it first. Why not ask Joho to come with us since he is an expert in this field?

M: That's a great idea.

(20)

A.He uses it for his job.

B.He spends too much time on the bus.

C.He lives too far from the university.

D.He would feel safer at night with a car.
