听力原文: There is one foreign product the Japanese are buying faster than others and its popularity has caused an uneasy feeling among many Japanese.

That product is foreign words. Gairaigo — words that come from outside — have been part of the Japanese language for centuries. Mostly borrowed from English and Chinese, these terms are often changed into forms no longer understood by native speakers.

But in the last few years the trickle of foreign words has become a flood, and people fear the increasing use of foreign words is making it hard for the Japanese to understand each other and could lead to many people forgetting the good qualities of traditional Japanese.

"The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new," says university lecturer and writer Takashi Saito. "By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new, which makes it easier for the media to pick up."

"Experts often study abroad and use English terms when they speak with people in their own fields. Those terms are then included in government white papers," said Muturo Kai, president of the National Language Research Institute. "Foreign words find their way easily into announcements made to the general public, when they should really be explained in Japanese."

Against the flow of new words, many Japanese are turning back to the study of their own language. Saito's Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of the many language books that are now flying off booksellers' shelves.

"We are expecting to sell the books to young people," said the writer, "but it turns out they are more popular with the older generation, who seem uneasy about the future of the Japanese."

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What advantages do foreign words have over traditional Japanese terms?

27. What do Takashi Saito say about Japanese people?

28. Which plays an important part in the spread of foreign words?

29. What do we know about the book Japanese to Be Read Aloud?

(33)

A.Foreign words are best suited for announcements.

B.The ideas expressed in foreign words sound new.

D.The use of foreign words makes the media more popular.

听力原文: When students from other countries come to the United States ,they are sometimes
shocked at the casualness in American college and university classes. For example, American professors do not dress up and they generally call students by their first names. Students can speak out in class, where they do not even need to raise their hands. In addition, in many schools, students can drink coffee, tea, juice, or soft drinks during classes.

Foreign students can usually get used to these differences easily. However, two examples of American casualness are very difficult for some foreign students to understand. First, students sometimes call their teachers by their first names. Instead of calling a teacher Mr. Smith or Professor Adams, they call them Tom or John. In some countries, it is not possible for students to" first name" their teachers. Second, American students sometimes criticize the ideas of their teachers. They might also give their teachers suggestions about changing something in the class. In many countries, students cannot openly criticize their teachers or classes.

Thus, some foreign students feel shocked, embarrassed, and uncomfortable in American classrooms. They have two choices. One, they can imitate the behavior. of the American students. But in this case, they might feel uncomfortable and disrespectful. Two, they can continue to follow the customs from their home countries. But in this case, the American teachers and students might think that the foreign students are too formal or too quiet.

What is the solution to this problem? There is no easy answer. However, time will help to solve the problem, because foreign students will become accustomed to the new behavior.

What is Professor Edward Johnson sometimes called by his students?

A.Professor Johnson.

B.Edward.

C.Mr. Johnson.

D.Professor Edward.

听力原文:Speaker: Before the Second World War, people usually learnt a foreign language in
order to read the literature of the country. Now, speaking the foreign language is what most people want. Every year, millions of people start to learn one. How do they do it? Some people try at home, with books or records or tapes; some listen to the radio or watch television program; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only two or three times a week, learning it will take us a long time, like language learning at school. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken. However, most people can not afford this, and for many it is unnecessary. They need the language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be able to read books and reports in a foreign language. Whether the language is learned quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books help, but they can not do the students' work for him.

Before the Second World War, why did people learn a foreign language?

A.To read the literature of the country.

B.To read the books of foreign countries.

C.To write books in foreign languages.

D.To communicate with people of other countries.

Task 2Directions: This task is the same as Task 1.The 5 questions or unfinished statements

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

The most important thing when honoring guests from foreign countries is to accept and understand the differences. Here are some of the differences that people have in their different cultures.

In the United States, Britain and most Western countries, men should remove their hats (including baseball caps) when attending church services, at funerals and during the singing of the national anthem. A gentleman never wears a hat inside a building, and a guest who walks into someone's home wearing a hat is considered a buffoon whose parents did a bad job of educating their offspring——for it rarely rains inside a house!

The French are not rude, but they do not like smiles. They just believe that anyone who smiles a lot is an idiot. If you want to relate to the French, smile with your eyes, do not grin with your mouth.

Do not bring wine to dinner at the home of a French person; such an act is thought to show a lack of confidence in the host's wine choice. Flowers are more appreciated.

In Germany a gentleman stands behind a lady on an escalator going up, and in front of her on an escalator going down just in case she falls down.

The gesture that many Americans think to be universal to indicate "OK" or "I agree", or "Great" which is a hand sign that employs the fingers spread with the tips of thumb and index finger forming a circle, is an obscene gesture in many countries, notably Brazil and Southern Europe.

According to the passage, you can respect foreign guests by ______.

A.saying hello to them whenever you meet them

B.accepting and understanding their different cultures

C.sharing happiness and hardship with them

D.helping them get what they hope for
