听力原文: The Canadian Thanksgiving makes an interesting counterpoint to the holiday celebrated by its southern neighbor. As mentioned earlier, the first North American thanksgiving event occurred in Newfoundland in 1578. In the 1600s, Samuel de Champlain and the French Settlers who came with him established an "Order of Good Cheer." This group would hold huge celebrations marking the harvests and other events, sharing their food with Native American neighbours.

The first Canadian Thanksgiving was celebrated on April 15,1872 in thanks for the recovery of the future King Edward VII from a serious illness. The next Thanksgiving didn't occur until 1879 when it was celebrated on a Thursday in November.

Much like the United States, Canada seemed to have a difficult time deciding when a day of Thanksgiving should occur. From 1879 to 1898 it was celebrated on a Thursday in November; from 1899 to 1907 on a Thursday in October (except in 1901 and 1904 when it was celebrated on a Thursday in November); from 1908 to 1921 on a Monday in October; and between 1922 and 1930 the Armistice Day Act declared that Thanksgiving would be celebrated on Armistice Day, the Monday of November 11. In 1931 the Act was amended and the 01d practice of Parliament declaring a day of Thanks. giving each year was resumed.

(27)

A.1678 in Newfoundland.

B.1378 in Newfoundland.

C.1578 in Newfoundland.

听力原文: Who is the most important person in the United States? Someone will say Thomas Jefferson, some will say Washington and I believe most people will say it's Benjamin Franklin.

Often called "the first American" and "the last universal man", Benjamin Franklin's life covered most of the eighteenth century--(26) from 1706 to 1790. He was America's first great scientist and engineer and an author and philosopher of rare wit. He was one of the first supporters of the federal system of government and one of the great educational pioneers of his day. He was a successful businessman, a believer in free enterprise, and a statesman and diplomat. He truly seemed able to do almost everything.

Always curious, Franklin looked for easier and better ways to do things. He invented an open stove which gave more heat and wasted less fuel than a fireplace. It is still used in many places today. (27)He also made the first pair of bifocal glasses and invented a musical instrument called the harmonica and the stepladder chair.

(28) Franklin was especially famous as an early experimenter in electricity. On a June day in 1752, during a thunderstorm, he flew a silken kite up into the stormy sky. As a black cloud swept across the kite, a key attached to the kite string became charged with electricity. Thus, he proved that lightning and electricity are the same. Using this knowledge, he invented the lightning rod which today protects millions of buildings from lightning.

A.The World War II.

B.The World War I.

听力原文:The traditional American family used to have a working father, a housewife-mother, and two or three children. But in the last 25 years, this picture has changed. Now we have many different kinds of families and living situations besides this traditional one. For example, there are many single mothers and single fathers who are raising children by themselves. There are married couples who decide that they don't want any children. Sometimes adult children who have been living alone for a long time come back and live with their parents again. You can also find groups of older people sharing a house in order to save money. And there are many other examples of new types of families in this country.

Why has the traditional family changed so much? Well, the reasons are both social and economic. First, as you know, the divorce rate is high in our culture; as a result, we have many single-parent families. Second, there is unemployment among young adults. If they cannot find a job, many times they return home and live with their parents again. But of course the most important reason for the changes in the American family is all American women are now working or looking for work. This means that more than half of all American homes do not have a full-time homemaker anymore.

Question : What is the main idea of this passage?

(27)

A.Traditional American family.

B.Modern American family.

C.Women's role in American family.

D.Changes in the American families and reasons.

听力原文: In the early days of the railroads, horses pulled the trains. The trains had no power of their own. Richard Trevithik of England invented a steam-powered engine in 1804. Soon people were building railroads and steam engines all over the world. Because the steam engines did the work that animals used to do, people called them "iron horses".

Peter Cooper was a rich American businessman. He owned a lot of land near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He wanted the railroad to be successful. He built his own steam engine to drive along the railroad.

Most people traveled in coaches drawn by horses. A coach line challenged Peter Cooper to a race.

The day of the race came. At first the horse was winning the race. Peter Cooper's engine needed time to build up steam. He worked hard to make the train go faster. Soon he was catching up with the horse, he was going to win the race! Suddenly one of the parts of the engine broke. The train stopped. The horse rushed ahead. Peter Cooper lost the race.

Of course, that was not the end of the story. By 1870, railroad extended all across the United States. The "iron horse" had become an important part of American life,

(30)

A.Because they were driven by steam power.

B.Because they did the work that animals used to do.

C.Because they pulled cars full of coal.
