Every year, many foreign students go to America to study

English. Some of them will participate in a homestay program

and live with an American family. However, others will take a S1.______

different decision. They will live with friends from their own

country. I believe that if a foreign student looks at both possibilities,

he will decide to live with an American family. Even though

there are one or two drawbacks to the homestay way, there are far S2.______

more benefits.

In making his decision about how to live in the United

States, the foreign student is smart to consider one or two S3.______

disadvantages to live with an American family. First of all, he must

realize that he is going to feel homesick at first. Living in an

American home with people of other language and culture may S4.______

cause this feeling to increase. Also, the American family could

become very protective of him. They may ask him where he is

going, when he leaves home and when he will return. Despite of

these two disadvantages, there is a stronger argument in favor of S5.______

living with Americans.

By living in an American home, the student has an opportunity

to become familiar with American customs and culture. For

instance, he will learn the importance of family closeness. He

can see how the children communicate with their parents and how

the parents educate their children. He will not feel like a stranger

because the American family will help him adjusting to a new S6.______

life. In an American home, he can learn English fast. Family

members can help him with his homeworks. When he speaks S7.______

English, they can point out his errors. In this way, he can learn

English naturally.

Although there are some disadvantage to live with an American S8.______

family, there are heavier benefits. If the foreign student at S9.______

first realizes the value of learning about a new culture and improving

his English at the same time, he will find studying there a

very big experience. S10.______

听力原文: Today I bought a copy of China Daily. This is the first time I have bought an English language newspaper. I know I can only understand a little part of it. I bought it out of curiosity. My teacher told us it's good reading material for learning English, I haven't gone into the details of each piece. I have just gone over the headlines. I found it very comprehensive as well as interesting. There are many pictures and a weather report. It has many sections, such as Home News, International News, Business News and Sports News, and so on. Certainly, there are some other sections, too, of which I don't know the Chinese equivalents. I like anything from sports and entertainment to politics. I plan to buy it regularly. I can get a great deal of information and important news of both internal affairs and the world while I'm learning the English language.

What did the boy buy?

A.China Daily.

Some people try at home, with books and tapes, some use radio or television programs, others go to school or attend evening classes. Nowadays people even may use the Internet or various computer softwares to study English. If they use English only two or three times a week, it will take a long time to learn it, like English learning at school. A few people try to learn English fast and study six or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn English in England, Canada, Australia or the United States. However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. 第10题
People are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems
between the first generation and the second generation because they dont have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity. For example, my aunt, who has been living in Chicago for twenty-five years, has three children and they were all bom in the States. The eighteen-year old daughter speaks English as a native language and she speaks Korean very well too. She has no problems talking with her parents, but she still doesnt understand Korean jokes, and there are sometimes misunderstandings. The second daughter is fourteen years old, and she doesnt want to speak Korean. My aunt often gets upset with her because she is very Americanized and they cannot understand each other. Even when my aunt punishes her, this daughter does not understand what my aunt is talking about. The third child is a twelve-year-old son. He speaks English to his parents and my aunt speaks Korean to him as she does to the second daughter. He also has a problem communicating with his parents. My aunt is trying to teach him to speak both languages, but it is very hard for him because he speaks English all day and does not understand why he should learn to speak Korean. We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort to make their children understand their heritage by teaching them the parents language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the second generation establish their identity.

What do you think this article is about?

A.Learning a second language.

B.Immigrants who become sick in the US.

C.Schools attended by immigrants to the US.

D.Language and its effect on the identity of immigrants.
