听力原文: Good 'afternoon, class. Today, we'll continue our discussion of modern American architects. Now, let's review the three main elements that any architect must consider when designing a building. One of the elements is function. An architect must consider the function of a building, whether the design hinders or enhances the use of the building, whether the design allows for easy heating and cooling, plumbing, and electrical wiring.

Appearance, the second element is appearance. Does the building fit in with its surroundings? Is it pleasing to look at or an eyesore? Its appearance is quite an important element.

The last one is durability. An architect must consider a building's durability, whether the materials will withstand wear from weather on the outside and from use on the inside.

Now we'll move on to discuss the architect. The man in this photograph is Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright has been called the greatest figure in modem American architecture because of his influence on function, appearance, and durability.

I've placed several books on reserve in the library. Some of the books contain pictures and diagrams of Wright's work, and there's also an in-depth and...um...informative biography of Wright. The reserve material in the library is optional, but yon may want to spend some time with it in order to have the best understanding possible of Frank Lloyd Wright and his work.

What is the professor mainly discussing?

A.The importance of function in the design of a building.

B.A number of modem American architects and the important elements in their work.

C.Three main elements that any architect must think when designing a building and a famous architect.

D.The important characteristics of the designs of one specific architect.

听力原文: The question of whether dogs have a sense of humor is often fiercely argued. My own opinion is that some have and some haven't. Dachshunds have, but not St Bernards or Great Danes. Apparently a dog has to be small .to be f6nd of joke. You never find a Great Dane trying to be a comedian.

But it is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts overdoing it; As an example of this I would, poirit to Rudolph ; a Dachshund I once owned, whose slogan was "Anything for a Laugh". Dachshunds are always the worst of. fenders in this respect because of peculiar shape. It is only natural that when a dog finds that his mere appearance makes the viewing public laugh, he should imagine that Nature intended him to be a comedian.

Sometimes Rudolph overplays his sense of humor, a typical example of which is he once stole ducks from a farm nearby and brought complaints on me. It is true that Dachshunds and other dogs have their faults, but they seem unimportant ;compared with their virtues.

According to the narrator, which kind of dogs is thought to have a sense of humor?

A.St Bernards.

B.Great Danes.

C.Dachshunds.

A

One hundred new bookstalls that will sell newspapers as well as books have been making their debut on city streets since Saturday morning.

The newsstands are part of the city's efforts to improve the appearance of streets and neighborhoods. The newsstands' design, featuring large glass window, will help the customers to see what is on sale at a glance.

An electrical screen on the newsstands will announce immediately the arrival of. the latest papers. There will be 1,000 newsstands by the end of the year. The newly formed company will manage the stalls. According to sources from the company, over 80 percent of the people hired to operate the stands will be recruited from laid-off workers. This means the project will help ease the city's unemployment pressure, sources said.

All recruited will undergo a training programme and be dressed in green uniform. Municipal Vice Party Secretary Gong Xueping said the installation of the 100 stands was just the first step towards the objective of setting up 1,000 stands in the city by the end of the year.

He said the creation of the stalls would be of particular significance to the enhancement of the city's spiritual civilization. He also made some suggestions regarding the location, design and construction of the new stands and the renovation of the existing newsstands.

One hundred new bookstalls are set up to______.

[A] classify the bookstores

[B] beautify the streets and neighborhoods

[C] enrich people's minds with knowledge

[D] increase people' s purchasing power

听力原文: Body language, with the technical name non-verbal communication, does not involve tile use of words, NVC for short.

When someone is saying something with which he agrees, the average European will smile and nod approval. On the other hand, if you disagree, you may frown and shake your head. Incidentally, I referred a moment ago to "the average European", because body language is very much tied to culture, and in order not to misunderstand, or not to be misunderstood, you must appreciate this. A smiling Chinese, for instance, may not be approving but acutely embarrassed.

Quite a lot of work is now being done on the subject of NVC, which is obviously important, for instance, to managers, who have to deal every day with their staff, and have to understand what other people are feeling ff they are to create good working conditions. Body language, or NVC signals, are sometimes categorized into five kinds: (1) body and facial gestures; (2) eye contact; (3) body contact or proximity; (4) clothing and physical appearance; and (5) the quality of speech. In some cultures—and I am sure this is a cultural feature and not an individual one—it is quite normal for people to stand close together, or to more or less thrust their face into yours when they are talking to you. In other cultures this is disliked; Americans, for instance, talk about invasion of their space.

The body language is closely related to

A.words and phrases.

B.culture.

C.individuals.

D.misunderstanding.
