In this type of market, supply normally is very elastic--that is responsive to demand--in the short run. Stocks or inventories are held at some point in the chain of distribution; while stocks are running down or building up, there is time to change the level of production, and once a price has been set, it is rarely altered in response to moderate changes in demand. Even in a deep slump, defensive rings may be formed to prevent price cutting.
In the long run, as well as in the short, supply is responsive to demand in the market for manufactures. It is easier to change the composition of a firm's output than it is to change the production of a mine or a plantation. And when changes in demand are not too rapid, gross profits from one plant can be siphoned off and invested in something quite different. When business is good, moreover, there is continual new investment so that productive capacity is adapted to meeting changing requirements. Workers themselves may not even be aware of changes in the final commodities to which their work contributes, and the level of wages for any grade of factory labour is very little affected by the fortunes of a particular market.
The "imperfection" of the market for manufactured goods is reflected in all of the following aspects, except ______.
A.the distinctive style. of each company
B.the attempts of advertisement to attract buyers to particular brand names
C.tendency for the prices of the same goods to equalize quickly
D.the freedom of small businesses to decide the prices they will charge
听力原文: There are so many things going on in our modern lives, and change happens so quickly. It is hard to imagine a time when things were slower and you could really see a new thing come into your life and to remember the day or the year when those things happened. I know that today, for example, there, are many instances of second and third generations of things, such as televisions or radios, when some of us were not even aware that there was a first generation.
A friend of mine was born at the end of the last century, and talking to her, I really got a sense of her being a living history book, of being able to talk about the changes in her own life and to know that these changes were really the changes that society was going through.
She gets really excited, for example, when she talks about the first time she ever saw a camera, and even more excited when she saw herself in the picture that the photographer took. She lived in a small town, and at the time that she was very young, there were no cars or trains in her town at all. As she grew up, cars and trains came in, and she remembers her first ride with a real sense of amazement that any one count move so fast.

B.Televisions mark the beginning of modem life.
C.Modern life is changing very fast.
D.It's hard to remember the past.
SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: Great changes have been made in family life because of science and industry. In the past, when more Americans lived on farms, the typical family had many children. In a family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry become more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off and to move again whenever necessary. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consist only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take raising children as their chief work. At the same time they may also raise other people' s children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.
Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passage?
A.High divorce rate has made modem families smaller.
B.There is always a generation gap in modem families.
C.Families will die out in the future.
D.Science and industry have brought great changes to family life.
Women have the right to equal pay because______.
A.a law was passed
B.the Equal Pay Act was issued
C.they can vote
D.they do the same jobs as men
听力原文:WB How's your business doing?
MB Well, sales are definitely lower than expected. I think that's because the housing market has been slowing down recently. In the appliance world, even small changes in the housing market tend to affect us a lot.
WB Hmm... I guess I never made the connection between the home appliance industry and the housing market before. But it makes sense.
MB It sure does. When people buy new houses they usually buy new appliances for them. In fact, you can accurately gauge how the housing market is doing just by looking at our sales figures.
What does the man say about his business?
A.It plans to open new stores around the world.
B.Sales are not as high as he had been expecting.
C.It has been affected by recent political events.
D.Sales are expected to increase in the next quarter.
It is a curious paradox that we think of the physical sciences as "hard", the social sciences as "soft", and the biological sciences as somewhere in between. This is interpreted to mean that our knowledge of physical systems is more certain than our knowledge of biological systems, and these in turn are more certain than our knowledge of social systems. In terms of bur capacity to sample the relevant universes, however, and the probability that our images of these universes are at least approximately correct, one suspects that a reverse order is more reasonable. We are able to sample earth's social systems with some degree of confidence that we have a reasonable sample of the total universe being investigated. Our knowledge of social systems, therefore, while it is in many ways extremely inaccurate, is not likely to be seriously overturned by new discoveries. Even the folk knowledge in social systems on which ordinary life is based in earning, spending, organizing, marrying, taking part in political activities, fighting and so on, is not very 'dissimilar from the more sophisticated images of the social system derived from the social sciences, even though it is built upon the very imperfect samples of personal experience.
In contrast, our image of the astronomical universe, of even of earth's geological history, can easily be subject to revolutionary changes as new data comes in and new theories are worked out. If we define the "security" of our image of various parts of the total system as the probability of their suffering significant changes, then we would reverse the order of hardness and see the social sciences as the most secure, the physical sciences as the least secure, and again the biological sciences as somewhere in between. Our image of the astronomical universe is the least secure of all simply because we observe such a fantastically small sample of it and its record-keeping is trivial as compared with the rich records of the social systems, or even the limited records of biological systems. Records of the astronomical universe, despite the fact that we see distant things as they were long ago, are limited in the extreme.
Even in regard to such a close neighbor as the moon, which we have actually visited, theories about its origin and history are extremely different, contradictory, and hard to choose among. Our knowledge of physical evolution is incomplete and highly insecure.
The word "paradox"(Para. 1) means "()".
A.implication
B.contradiction
C.interpretation
D.confusion

听力原文: In 1966, the Third National Conference on the Status of Women reported that, aside from having the vote, women were discriminated against in almost every other aspect of American life. It became apparent to a small group of delegates to the conference that the only way to bring about change was to form. an organization of their own. And so the National Organization for Women(NOW)was born. The first meeting was held later that same year and attracted three hundred men and women form. all parts of the country. It was the first effort to bring people together on the national level to work on equal opportunities for the female population. Since then, the National Organization for Women has grown to a membership of 100,000 and has over seven hundred chapters worldwide. NOW has helped to bring about important changes in attitudes toward women and to give them new political, economic and social rights. Although there are still areas in which women are looked down upon, they generally agree that more choices are open to them today than ever before. This is nowhere more apparent that in their participation in the workforce. In the United States, more than one-half of the women over sixteen work, and more than ever they are filling the so-called "men-only jobs". Women are choosing to become auto mechanics, police officers, and ministers. Even though these jobs bring with them a great degree of satisfaction, they often create a unique set of circumstances.
(27)

B.Because it offered more opportunities for jobs.
C.Because women did not have votes.
D.Because it was a sign Lo show that women have equal rights.

听力原文: Some animals remain and stay active in the winter. They must adapt to the changing weather. Many make changes in their behavior. or bodies. To keep warm, animals may grow new, thicker fur in the fall. On weasels and snowshoe rabbits, the new fur is white to help them hide in the snow.
Food is hard to find in the winter. Some animals, like squirrels, mice and beavers, gather extra food in the fall and store it to eat later. Other animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change. The red fox eats fruit and insects in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter, it can't find these things, so instead it eats small rodents.
Animals may find winter shelter in holes in trees or logs, under rocks or leaves, or underground. Some mice even build tunnels through the snow. To try to stay warm, animals like squirrels and mice may huddle close together. Certain spiders and insects may stay active if they live in frost-free areas and can find food to eat. Also, some fish stay active in cold water during the winter.
Some animals "hibernate" for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animal's body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy. In the fall, these animals get ready for winter by eating extra food and storing it as body fat. They use this fat for energy while hibernating. Some also store food like nuts or acorns to eat later in the winter.
(27)
A.To eat more.
B.To hide in the snow.
C.To hide in the water.
D.To grow new, thicker fur in the fall.
