听力原文:W: Tom, can you tell me what percentage of the United States' population is registered to vote?
M: Off the top of my head, I'm afraid I don't know.
What does Tom mean'?
(12)
A.He put file information on top of his desk
B.He doesn't know the answer right now.
C.The top of his head hurts.
D.He's not sure of the population of the US.
M: Yes, sure there're differences. I guess that you're more...uh...conscious of time when you work for a big company.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, you get this eight-to-five attitude. You know, five o'clock rolls around, and you get up and go home. And now it's your time.
W: Uhm.
M: Uh... well, when in a small company, you are personally involved and do things because you want to. In the big corporation, you are not as much in control of the exact environment that you are in.
W: There's something sort of...uh...impersonal about a big company to a lot of people.
M: Well, it's impersonal in that...uh...probably just a small percentage of the employees know the top management.
W: Hmm...
M: And none of them probably have ever seen the president of the company. So, from that sense, it's impersonal.
W: Do you operate on a first-name basis?
M: In our company, almost everybody deals on a first-name basis. When I see the president, I call him by his first name. And everybody does so.
W: Well, it sounds like you're saying that there's a certain amount of pride and satisfaction in doing the job.
M: Indeed! And in a small company, I think the individual would have a greater sense of the company's goal.
W: Sort of group spirit or something?
M: You may say that. People know exactly what the product is, and what they're performing and why they are performing it. In a large company, people get further away from the end product.
W: In that case, it's not an identification with the primary goal of the company.
M: That's exactly what I mean.

M: It's surprising because when I started, I thought I'd be sending things to London and maybe Birmingham but, in fact, a high percentage of it is sent abroad, because it's immediate and speedy.
W: And how much would it cost, for example, if I wanted to send a fax to the United States?
M: Well, a fax to the United States would cost you five pounds for a page. And when you think that in England by the Royal Mail, it would cost you twelve pounds to send a page by special delivery, it's actually a good value.
W: Ok. What about your hours? How long do you have to spend actually in the shop?
M: Well, the shop is open from eight in the morning until six at night, six days a week, and then a sort of fairly flexible morning on a Sunday. Urn, and of those hours, I'm in it quite a lot.
W: And did you enjoy it?
M: Yes, overall I enjoy it. Running a business by yourself is hard work and you never quite like every aspect all the time. 95 % of the customers I love. Uh, 2% I really, you know, I'm not too bothered about. And 3 % I positively hate.
W: What, what's the problem with those?
M: Urn, it's hard to categorize really. I find people who are just to- tally rude, urn, unnecessary, and I don't really need their business and I suppose they form. the volume of the people that I don't like but it's a very small percentage.

W: Charles, among other things, you regarded as one of the America’sgreat masters of the blues. A musical idiom does essentially about loss, particularly the loss of romantic love. Why does love die?
M: People often get into love affairs because they have unrealisticexpectations about somebody. Then when the person doesn’t turn out to be whothey thought he or she was, they start thinking maybe I can change him or her. That kind of thinking is a mistake. Because when the dust settles, people aregoing to be pretty much what they are. It’s a rare thing for anybody to be ableto change who they really are. And this creates a lot of problems.
W: At 62, you continue to spend a large percentage of your lifetouring. What appeals to you about life on the road?

M: You think I be used to it by now. But I still find it fascinating. You go to a little town in Japan, where nobody speaks English, yet they knowyou on side and know all your music. I’m still amazed by the love peopleexpress for me and by music.
