Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people axe anxious a
nd self-conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. Adperson's self- concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep affect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, have low self-esteem (自尊), are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing" the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praises with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true. "It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to absence of inferiority. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

The first paragraph is mainly about ______.

A.the thoughts of shy people.

B.the cause of shyness.

C.the effect of shyness on people.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious a
nd selfconscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts axe constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people adversely. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are. likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliments because they believe they are unworthy, of praise. A shy person may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true." It is clear that, while self awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient effort in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. For example, most people would like to he "A" students in every subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have difficulty in some areas. People's expectations of themselves must be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy.

Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let's not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

The first paragraph is mainly about______.

A.the characteristics of shy people

B.the cause of shyness

C.the questions in the minds of shy people

D.the effect of shyness on people

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: The idea of respect comes from the concept that everyone, including yourself, has self-worth, and therefore should be treated with dignity. Say, for example, that you're having a discussion with your boyfriend or girlfriend and your opinions are different. While you may disagree with each other, each of you still has a right to your own feelings. You can show each other respect by sticking to your own values or beliefs while agreeing to disagree. Calling someone names or making fun of them because they think, act, or look differently deprives them of their dignity, and is disrespectful. It is important to treat others fairly and with respect, just as you would want to be treated yourself.

Can you think of times when someone has or hasn't shown you respect? How did it feel? What could that person have done differently?

Each person in a relationship has a level of responsibility. This means that if you've committed yourself to something, it's up to you to carry it out and see it through. This can include anything from saying you'll call someone at a certain time and then calling that person, to deciding what you would do if you or your girlfriend had to make an important decision. What does responsibility mean to you? Have there been times when someone you know committed to something and then didn't follow through? How did that make you feel?

Whenever you think about responsibility, it's a good idea to keep respect in the back of your mind--and vice versa. There are respectful ways of handling responsibilities, and there are disrespectful ways. And no matter what happens, we must all answer for our own actions. The best relationships axe developed when people respect one another and take responsibility for themselves and for their role in the relationship.

(34)

A.By telling some jokes to each other.

B.By persuading other people to accept their opinions.

C.By agreeing to accept each other's opinions later.

D.By allowing each other to hold different beliefs.
