听力原文: Some banks offer other types of loans repayable by monthly installments, such as business development loans, house improvement loans, and farm development loans. These may be either secured or unsecured. Secured loans attract a slightly lower rate of interest than unsecured loans. Some banks offer revolving credit schemes. These normally involve loans repayable by regular monthly installments, but they differ from other loans repayable by installments in two respects. First, the borrower need not take up the full amount of the loan at the outset. Secondly, as his repayments reduce his indebtedness, he can "top up" his loan by borrowing more, provided that the total debt outstanding does not exceed his agreed credit limit. In 1967 some banks introduced a new form. of account called a "budget account". The object is to allow personal customers to spread the incidence of normal personal and household expenditure.

24. Which of the following loans is not repaid by installments?

25.Which of the following loans would attract a lower rate of interest?

26.How does a borrower "top up" his loan?

27.What is the objective of introduction of the budget account?

(24)

A.Business development loans.

B.House improvement loans.

C.Farm development loans.

D.Overdrafts.

听力原文: When a housewife wants to turn her bedroom around to face the sun, she can do it at the press of a button. A New Zealand inventor recently perfected the world's first prefabricated revolving house. The inventor, Peter Lester, has protected his idea by taking out a patent on it.

The first home built to his design is in Rotorua, New Zealand. The cost of the model is close to that of an ordinary home with the same floor space, 1800 square feet. The main house revolves like a wheel above the basement, which remains stationary. The plastic roof is semitransparent and softens the light. Roof binds in each room are controlled by an electronic system.

The revolving house will be suitable in any climate. In hot zones the house can turn to a shady side for coolness, or it can rotate, at one revolution every four minutes, to catch as much breeze as possible.

(27)

A.England.

B.Netherlands.

C.Ireland.

D.New Zealand.

听力原文: Many of the innovations in fire fighting that we will be seeing today were developed right here in America. As you can see from these photos, one of the earliest steam powered fire engines, the Joe. Ross, was built in 1850 and operated right here in Cincinnati. Driven by four large horses, the ten-ton machine was steered by a single front wheel that was attached directly to the horse team. The steam motor on the Joe Ross was used to power the water pump that the big machine used to fight fires.

Over here, we have an actual truck which was built in 1900 by the Waterbus Fire Engine Works of Minneapolis. This was the very first fire engine to utilize a single steam motor for pulling the engine as well as pumping the water. As you may notice at the top of the truck, there is a circular platform. that holds one end of a long ladder. The revolving platform. operates almost like a record turntable in order to make it easier for ladder operators to access buildings from difficult angles. The idea of the ladder turntable is credited to a San Francisco fireman by the name of Daniel Hayes. Hayes' lifesaving invention, when combined with the relatively quick response time of the single engine, helped to bring fire fighting into the modern era.

(30)

A.Urban fires

B.American fire fighting innovations.

C.The history of fire.

D.The Great San Francisco Fire.

听力原文:W: I saw a rerun of an old western program on TV last night.

M: Oh? What was on?

W: Gunsmoke. Do you remember that TV program with Marshall Dillon, Miss Kitty, and Doc?

M: Doc? A doctor in a western?

W: Sure, actors were important in the Old West. In fact, medical care in the west was pretty good by the 1900's, it was generally as good as in the rest of the country.

M: Even in the rural areas?

W: Well, there, people had less access to the best available care since the roads were pretty poor.

M: I'd imagine all that changed with the coming of the automobile.

W: It certainly did. The automobile caused both the open frontier and horse and buggy travel to gradually disappear. And it allowed doctors and patients to get around more quickly.

M: I'll bet doctors were able to attend to emergencies much more rapidly, too.

W: Right. And cars became even more important as more people steeled in the West.

M: I find tile history of the Old West really interesting.

W: So do I
