A major sociological theory known as symbolic interactionism offers some important insight
s into how men and women are taught to fill different roles in society. The key concept in symbolic interactionism is that communication makes a big difference in behavior. people act on the basis of messages they receive from others, and how they understand those messages. This can be seen in a concept developed by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley known as the looking-glass serf.

By the looking-glass self, Cooley meant the self-image that each of us develops according to the messages we receive from others; we think and behave according to our understanding of those messages. If, for example, a young girl is repeatedly told that she is pretty, she will come to believe that: (1) she is in fact pretty, and (2) being pretty is an important thing in her life. Similarly, if she is told that she is not good (or not expected to be good) at certain things such as math, she will come to believe that she is not good at such things and would be better off working at things she can be successful at. The likely product is a young woman who devotes a great deal of attention to her appearance, regards being pretty as a key to success in life, and who is intimidated by anything connected with numbers.

Since we know that young girls are given messages like these, and that young boys are given different messages, we can see a good part of how sex roles are taught. There is little or no evidence of differences in what young girls and young boys can do, but the older children become, the greater the differences in the areas in which boys and girls are interested.

According to the passage, if one is given a certain message about himself or herself time and again, he or she will ______.

A.regard it as important in all his or her life

B.pay much attention to his or her appearance

C.find it believable and then behave accordingly

D.make it known to others to see whether it is true

听力原文: A critical factor that plays a part in people's susceptibility to colds is age. The University of the Michigan School of Public Health has done a study that revealed some general rules for the public. It says that infants are the most cold-ridden group. On an average, infants will catch more than six colds during their early years. Besides, boys have more colds than girls when they are under the age of three. When they grow older than three years old, it is easier for girls to catch cold than the boys. Girls might catch three colds, while boys catch two on average.

Generally speaking, the incidents of colds continue to decline while people are growing older. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections. This is because people in this age group are most likely to have young babies. Adults who delay having children until their 30s and 40s experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more limited space than those occupied by rich people, and crowding will increase the possibility of cold infections.

听力原文: Nobody can ever know who made the first doll. Perhaps a prehistoric man picked up a piece of wood or stone that looked like a human, What we do know is that early dolls were for magic and not for children. They were meant to bring good luck. The Greeks and Romans made wooden and clay dolls. Greek and Roman girls stayed with them until just before they were married when they took them to temple to show that they were grown up. About six hundred years ago, the dolls were sent all over French and abroad to show everyone how good French fashions were. The dolls wore nothing special. It was the place that counted. Dolls really became children's toys around eighteen hundred. Factories made plenty of them and rag dolls were made at home. Until about nineteen hundred dolls usually looked like grown-ups, not children. And later, dolls whose eyes could open and shut became popular.

(30)

A.They were first made of wood or stone.

B.They were invented in Greek.

C.They were meant to bring good luck.

D.They were children's favourite toys.

Clothes play a critical part in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to who people
are, who they are not, and who they would like to be. They tell us a good deal about the wearer' s background, personality, status, mood, and social outlook.

Since clothes are such an important source of social information, we can use them to manipulate people' s impression of us. Our appearance assumes particular significance in the initial phases of interaction that is likely to occur. An elderly middle-class man or woman may be alienated by a young adult who is dressed in an unconventional manner, regardless of the person' s education, background, or interests.

People tend to agree on what certain types of clothes mean. Adolescent girls can easily agree on the lifestyles of girls who wear certain outfits, including the number of boyfriends they likely have had and whether they smoke or drink. Newscasters, or the announcers who read the news on TV, are considered to be more convincing, honest, and competent when they are dressed conservatively. And college students who view themselves as taking an active role in their interpersonal relationships say they are concerned about the costumes they must wear to play these roles successfully. Moreover, many of us can relate instances in which the clothing we wore changed the way we felt about ourselves and how we acted. Perhaps you have used clothing to gain confidence when you anticipated a stressful situation, such as a job interview, or a court appearance.

In the workplace, men have long had well defined precedents and role models for achieving success. It has been otherwise for women. A good many women in the business world are uncertain about the appropriate mixture of "masculine" and "feminine" attributes they should convey by their professional clothing. The variety of clothing alternatives to women has also been greater than that available for men. Male administrators tend to judge women more favorably for managerial positions when the women display less "feminine" grooming-shorter hair, moderate use of make-up, and plain tailored clothing. As one male administrator confessed. "An attractive woman is definitely going to get a longer interview, but she won, t get a job."

According to the passage, the way we dress ______.

A.provides clues for people who are critical of us

B.has a direct influence on the way people regard us

C.indicates our likes and dislikes in choosing a career

D.is of particular importance when we get on in age

Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to colds is age. A study done
by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys' two.

The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance generally.

The paragraph before this passage most probably deals with ______ .

A.minor diseases other than colds

B.the recommended treatment of colds

C.a factor that affects susceptibility to colds

D.methods of preventing colds among elderly people
