As far as manners are concerned, I suppose I have always been a supporter of women's liberation. Over the years, out of a sense of respect, I imagine, I have refused to trouble women with outdated courtesies.
It is usually easier to follow rules of social behavior. than to depend on one's own taste. But rules may be safely broken, of course, by those of us. with:the gift of natural grace. For example, when a man and woman are led to their table in a restaurant and the waiter pulls out a chair, the woman is expected to sit in the chair. That is according to Ms. Ann Clark. I have always done it the other way, according to my wife.
It came up only the other night. I followed the hostess to the table, and when she pulled the chair out I sat on it, quite naturally, since it happened to be the chair I wanted to sit in. I had the best view of the boats.
"Well," my wife said, when the hostess had gone, "you did it again."
"Did what?" I asked, utterly confused.

Actually, since I'd walked through the restaurant ahead of my wife, it would have been awkward, I should think, not to have taken the chair. I had got there first, after all.
Also, it has always been my custom to get in a car first, and let the woman get in by herself. This is a courtesy I insist on as the stronger sex, out of love and respect. In times like these, there might be attackers hidden about. Two modes of argumentation have been used on behalf of women&39;s emancipation in Western societies. Arguments in what could be called the “relational" feminist tradition maintain the doctrine of "equality in difference".or equity as distinct for equality. They posit that biological distinctions between the sexes result in a necessary sexual division of labor in the family and throughout society and that women&39;s procreative labor is currently undervalued by society,to the disadvantage of women. Because the concept of individual rights was already well established in the Anglo- Saxon legal and political tradition, individualist feminism came to predominate in English-speaking countries.At the same time,the goals of the two approaches began to seem increasingly irreconcilable. Individualist feminists began to advocate a totally gender-blind system with equal rights for all. Reiational feminists,while agreeing that equal educational and economic opportunities outside the home should be available for all women,continued to emphasize women&39;s special contributions to society as homemakers and mothers;they demanded special treatment including protective legislation for women workers ,statesponsored maternity benefits, and paid compensation for housework. Relational arguments have a major pitfall because they underline women&39;s physiological and psychological distinctiveness, they are often appropriated by political adversaries and used to endorse male privilege. But the individualist approach, by attacking gender roles,denying the significance of physiological difference vand condemning existing familial institutions as hopelessly patriarchal, has often simply treated as irrelevant the family roles important to many women. If the individualist framework,with its claim for women&39;s autonomy,could be harmonized with the family-oriented concerns of relational feminists,a more fruitful model for contemporary feminist politics could emerge.
