听力原文:F: Professor Lee, the world's population passed six billion on Octoberl 1, 1999, we are told. How long did it take to get there and how long will it take to reach seven billion? And ten billion?
M: The world's population was 300 million at the dawn the Christian era, what we now call the year 1AD. In AD 1500, the world' s population reached 500 million. It took 304 years until 1804 to reach one billion, another 123 years until 1927, to reach two billion and then only another 33years until 1960, to add another billion to reach three billion.
F: It's very impressive that the recurring milestones of another billion added to the world' s population occurred quite quickly.
M: Indeed. The world population reached four billion in 14 years in 1974; five billion in 13years in 1987, and six billion in 12years in 1999. Data suggests that a world population of seven, eight, and nine billion will take respectively another 11,12 and 14years to achieved. The world' s population should hit ten billion mid-way through the 21 century in the year 2054.
When did the world's population reach six billion?
A.October 10, 1999.
B.October 11, 1999.
C.November 10, 1999.
D.November 11, 1999.

We show an amazing tolerance for a form. of pollution that is a growing problem: noise. Airplane traffic is increasing by five percent a year. Urban noise is doubling every ten years. By air, land and sea, we are facing an onslaught of noise that is threatening our ability to live in this world.
We have granted ourselves the right to make noise. But what about our responsibilities? Have we developed a sense of acoustic responsibility?
The evidence suggests that we have not. Many people seem to believe they have an unlimited right to make noise with cars and motorbikes, and with loud music at home and in the street. In some countries measures have been taken to force people to make less noise. In Britain, for example, a law has been passed preventing people from disturbing their neighbors with music at night.
It is widely accepted that we should deal with our rubbish in a responsible way. Noise is in reality a particularly insidious (潜在的) form. ofrubbish. It destroys community life, pursues us into our homes, keeps us from sleeping and is the cause of many stress-related illnesses, as well as hearing loss.
Our acoustic environment belongs to all of us. Everyone has the right to use it, but no one has the right to abuse it. Let"s start using it responsibly.

W: About ten minutes.
M: Did you notice whether the No. 7 bus had passed by?
W: Not while I've been standing here. I'm also waiting for the No. 7 bus myself.
M: Good. Hot today, isn't it?
W: Yes, it is. I wish that it would rain and cool off.
M: Me too. This is unusual for March. I don't remember it ever being so hot and dry in March before.
W: You were born in Florida then?
M: No. I was born in New York, but I've lived here for ten years now.
W: My mother and I have just moved here from Indiana.
M: Pretty cold in Indiana, isn't it?
W: Yes. That's why we moved, but we didn't know that it would be so hot here. We should have gone to California. Do you think we've missed the bus? I've been here for twenty minutes already.
M: Take it easy. It never comes exactly on the half-hour like it should.
