听力原文: Your assignments this term will be to write two major research papers. One of the most important things about writing a research paper is giving proper credit for your sources of information. Failure to do this is called plagiarism, which is a form. of dishonesty.

Plagiarism is a kind of stealing or at least an unauthorized borrowing of someone else's ideas. Sometimes inexperienced students will plagiarize unintentionally, and then be surprised when the teacher won't accept their papers, or gives them a failing grade.

The best way to avoid unitentional plagiarizing is to be very careful in gathering your information. As you take notes on books and magazine articles about the topic you've selected, first try to assimilate the information thoroughly. Secondly, write it down in your own words. This is called paraphrasing. If you do a good job of paraphrasing, you'll capture the main idea from your source without actually using any phrases from it. Most of your notes should probably be paraphrases. However, occasionally you may find something you wish to quote directly in your research paper. In this case, be sure that you copy the quotation precisely in your notes and enclose it in quotation marks. That way when you're finalizing your research paper, you'll be able to remember which of your notes are directly quoted. You can incorporate them appropriately and give the original author proper credit.

听力原文: As you probably know, log structures are gaining popularity. They are no longer
just the simple country homes that we think of as the traditional log cabin. Some upscale homes now incorporate natural round logs in sealing beams and walls. People seem to think that the rounded logs give their homes a cozy warm atmosphere. And even people who want to build a traditional log cabin on their own can buy a kit with precut logs that fit together like pieces of lig-saw puzzle. Before showing you some slides of modem log houses, I'd like to give you a little historical background on the subject.

Log cabins were first built in the late 1600s along the Delaware river valley. The European immigrants who settled there brought centuries' old traditions of working with logs. And in this heavily wooded area logs were the material in hand. Log cabins were the most popular in the early 1800s with the settlers who were moving west. They provided the answer to the pioneer's need for a sale and sliding boards for windows. But the log buildings that have probably had most influence on modern architects are those of the mountain retreats of wealthy New Yorkers. These country houses which were popular in the early 1900s typify what's known as the Adoroundyx style. Now let's look at those slides.

What is the speaker mainly discussing?

A.Traditional European architecture.

B.Techniques for building log cabins.

C.The history of log structures.

D.How to build a home by yourself.

听力原文:M: I'd like to share with you today my experience with a new approach to building
a house. It's called Envelop Building.

W: Hmm, it sounds interesting. Please share with us. What does it mean?

M: Essentially, what it means is that as you are building a house, you try to leave the landscape feature on the land, especially the vegetation in the original condition. So what you are not doing is the usual practice of "land scraping". By which I mean literally scraping or cleaning the land of any and all the original plants.

W: Why is the approach called Envelop Building?

M: Good question! Because instead of clearing everything away, you let your original landscape elements envelop or surround your house. Let the vegetation physical features such as hills and slopes or interesting rock formations, constitute a significant part of the character of the building site. The design of the house should take these features of the land into account.

W: Any more information about Envelop Building? Is it a recent technology?

M: Actually, integrating your original wild landscape with a house is not that new. The famous American architect Wright was doing it about 65 years ago. Envelop Building is not as easy as it sounds though. It's not just that you build your house and leave the land alone. By building, you are already damaging the original landscape. But as architects, we should try to work with environment, not against it. A creative architect can find ways to incorporate natural landscape into the overall design.

W: I guess this technology will be acknowledged by more architects.

(23)

A.Eliminating the original vegetation from the building site.

B.Making the houses in an area similar to one another.

C.Deciding where a house will be built.

D.Surrounding a building with wildflowers and plants.

I've posted a schedule on my office door'-sign your name to indicate the time you're available for an appointment. In the conference, we'll discuss your preliminary outline. Then you can make the necessary revisions and hand in your final outline, which is due two weeks from today.

Use the outline style. in your textbook and remember it should be no more than two pages long. Be sure to begin with a thesis statement-that is, with a precise statement of the point you intend to prove-and include a conclusion.
