听力原文: The New York Public Library is a very special place. Even though it is in the busiest part of the city, it has grass and trees around it, and benches for people to sit on. Even more unusual in crowded New York, its rooms are very large. The roof of the main reading room is 51 feet high. Here a reader can sit and think, and work and comfort. The library has 30 million books and paintings. It owns one of the first copies of a Shakespeare's play, a Bible printed in the 15th century, and a letter written by Columbus in which he tells of the finding of the New World. Every New Yorker can see and use the library's riches free, but the cost of running the library has risen rapidly in recent years. And the library does not have enough money to continue its work. In the past it was open every evening, and also on Saturdays and Sundays. Now it is closed at those times to save money. The library is trying in every possible way to raise more money to meet its increasing costs. Well-known New York writers and artists are trying to help, so are the universities whose students use the library, and the governments of New York City and New York State. But the problems remain serious. Yet ways must be found to save the public library. Because as one writer said, the public library is one of the most important buildings in New York city, it contains all our knowledge.

(33)

B.Its unusual location.

C.Its comfortable chairs.

听力原文: Senators are people who are elected every 6 years and they represent a whole state. This means there are fewer Senators than Congress Representatives but they do have the power to defeat any bill that has been passed by the Congress. Their function is to provide more security over the decisions and actions of the Congress Representatives, and to make sure that bills, passed by the House of Representatives, are not driven by narrow local interests. In England, the British have an appointed House of Lords to provide a "second sober thought" about new laws. In America, Senators are thought to do the same thing but the primary difference is that they are elected and are very responsive to public opinion. However, because they do not have to face elections for 6 years, it was thought that they may be more rational than populists, although in practice the Senate and the Congress are still very much swayed by the views of public opinion or by powerful lobby groups. If the bill is passed in the Senate, then it goes to the President to either sign or reject. If he signs it, it becomes law, but if he rejects it, that is to say he vetoes the bill, or refuses to sign it, or as they say, "pocket vetoes it", it will be sent back to the Congress. If the Congress disagrees with the President enough and does not Want to change or amend the bill, they can override the President's rejection called overriding the veto.

A.Their term.

B.Their duties.

C.Their function.

D.Their composition.

听力原文: During the past quarter century, abortion has joined race and war as one of the most contentious subjects of controversy in the United States. It discusses human interaction where ethics, emotions, and law collaborate. Many have contemplated upon the meaning of abortion. One argument is that every child born should be wanted. The people in lieu of this theory are often referred to as Pro-choice activists. The opposing argument is that every child conceived should be born, this theory epitomized by Pro-life activists. A public consensus exists that when human personhood starts, the law must protect person. Many religions, organizations, and individuals have fervently held conflicting beliefs about when this transpires. This naturally leads to differing policies on whether a woman should have access to abortion or not.

This brings us to the scientific aspect of the controversy. The interminable question surrounding the controversy is this: When does a baby actually become a baby? A female's ovum and a male's sperm are both clearly alive. They are living organisms ready to be joined as one to form. a baby. It is pointed out, however, that women release a few hundred eggs in a lifetime. Almost all of these eggs are destined to die and be ejected from the body. Little thought is given to these hundreds of deaths. Again, little consideration is given to these deaths. Yet, a public consensus exists that they are not yet human persons.

Which of the following are in favour of abortion if it is necessary?

A.Religious people.

B.Research scientists.

C.Pro-life activists.

D.Pro-choice activists.
