This book is written expressly for students in an attempt to present the material that is
most useful and interesting to them. Previous courses in chemistry are not necessary for the understanding of the material, although those students who have had high school chemistry will find that a review of the inorganic section will better enable them to master the organic and biochemistry sections that follow.

The author has felt that in the past there was an improper selection of material from inorganic, organic, and biochemistry in the majority of the textbooks of chemistry for nurse. The tendency has been to develop the inorganic chemistry to such an extent that organic and biochemistry is covered too briefly. The recent advances in biochemistry and their widespread application to the practice of medicine and nursing have considerably altered the situation. Not only is biochemistry more closely allied to the practical chemistry of medicine and nursing but also it is of more interest to the student. In the author's experience the response to biochemistry has always been more favorable than to the other sections. Within the brief period allotted to chemistry, therefore, the sections on inorganic, organic, and biochemistry should be so arranged that a good share of the time is spent in the study of biochemistry. This book presents mainly those fundamentals of inorganic and organic chemistry that are necessary for the understanding of the section on biochemistry.

The fundamental points suggested in the Curriculum Guide are included in the book, with some additions in the biochemistry section. The author feels that a study of urine, vitamins, nutrition, and hormones is so obviously a part of biochemistry that at least the fundamentals should be included in this course.

The book has been planned in such a way that it may be adapted to various courses in chemistry. The material suggested by the Curriculum Guide is covered in the first nineteen chapters and may be used in accelerated courses or where minimum time is allotted to chemistry. When the time allotted to the course is sixty to ninety hours, the entire contents of the book may be used to advantage. While the book has been written especially to fit the needs of Schools of Nursing, it could readily be applied in instances where students are required to take but one course in chemistry.

The apathetic attitude of nonprofessional students toward a course in inorganic chemistry may well be overcome by the proper presentation of material selected from inorganic, organic, and biochemistry.

Which of the following is TRUE about reading the book?

A.One must first review his high school courses.

B.Previous courses in chemistry are necessary.

C.A good mastery of biochemistry is essential.

D.One needn't have studied chemistry before.

Rogets Thesaurus is a book, and a very famous book, too. If youve never heard of it, dont
worry. But once you know it, it is a friend for life. And dont worry about the title. Roget is the man who wrote it, and "thesaurus" is from a Greek word meaning "treasure". Rogets Thesaurus is not a book which you read from cover to cover. And it certainly isnt a book which fills you with excitement the moment you open it. But it is a book you keep coming back to year after year, again and again, if you are interested in ... words. It is a vast treasure house of information about words. Briefly, it works in the opposite way to a dictionary. When you use a dictionary you know the word, but you dont know what it means. You use a dictionary to find out the meaning of the word. When you use a thesaurus, or the Thesaurus, as there is only one, and that is Rogets Thesaurus, you know about what the word means, but you cant find exactly the word you want. So you look up a related word in the index at the back of the book, then turn to the group or category of words with that meaning, and, well ... if youre lucky, youll soon have found your missing word. Rogets Thesaurus was first published in 1852, and in the next 125 years, that is by 1977, had sold over thirty million copies. Roget himself was a most remarkable man. He was already seventy when he wrote the book, and had spent a most active life as a scientist, physician and engineer. He had made several discoveries, and had published an important report on Londons water supply, which at that time(1827)was very polluted. His thesaurus was a hobby, or a sideline—something to do in his retirement. Indeed, in 1852, it is doubtful if anyone realized just what an important book it was. There were only a thousand copies of the first edition. But it was soon reprinted, and by the time of his death, Roget, who lived to the age of ninety, had seen twenty-five editions of his work printed. And the book is still going strong today, a century and a quarter later. There is most probably a copy in your library. But if you use it, do so with care. Dont try to use all the words which Dr. Peter Mark Roget put into each of his categories. If you do that you may have to go back to the dictionary to find out what some of them mean. Question: This passage is most likely______.

A.a book review

B.an advertisement

C.an editorial

D.a special report

When I began reading Catch -22, I thought it was a farcical satire on life in the United S
tates Army Air Force. Later I believed that Mr. Heller's target was modern war and all those who are responsible for waging it. Still later it seemed that he was attacking social organization and anyone who derives power from it. But by the end of the book it had become plain to me that it is——no other phrase will do——the human condition itself which is the object of Mr. Heller's outraged fury and disgust.

A reviewer must always keep an anxious eye on the state of his currency. If he announces too many masterpieces he risks inflation (though it is sometimes forgotten by some of us that the cowardice of perpetual crabbing (挑剔) receives its own kind of punishment). It does not seem many weeks since I was proclaiming that Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano is one of the great English novels of the century; and not long before that I was urging that attention should be paid to the magnificent and neglected talent of William Gerhardi.

But at the risk of inflation I cannot help writing that Catch - 22 is the greatest satirical work in English since Erewhon. For the fact is that all my successive interpretations of this book now seem to have been accurate, even if the earlier ones were also incomplete. The book has an immense and devastating (讽刺的) theme, but this theme is illustrated, as it should be, by means of an observed reality.

I am not suggesting that Catch - 22 is a realistic account of life in the war time Air Force of America or any other country. The method of satire is to inflate (放大) reality so that all its partially concealed blemishes (缺点) turn into monstrous and apparent deformations. The effect of good satire is to make us laugh with horror. And this means that social and personal evils which are being satirized must have been there, and must be felt by the reader to be there even while be is laughing at the results of the satirist's inflating imagination.

The passage seems to be from ______. ()

A.a review of a film

B.a book about the U. S. Air Force

C.an essay on satire

D.a review of a book

Which book review(s)contain(s)the following information?

Comparison of the significance of two economic books. 71.______

Stiglitz' s prestige in the field of economics. 72.______

Stiglitz' s criticism of those who exaggerated the power of markets in developing countries. 73.______

Policy making should consider local conditions. 74. ______

The intervention of government is the way to assist globalization. 75.______

Stiglitz' s dedication to the development of poor countries. 76.______

Stiglitz' s preference of one type of economic policy over another one. 77.______

More people joined Stiglitz in criticizing free trade and globalization. 78.______

Stiglitz' s points have been supported by what actually happened in the country. 79.______

Mainly gives positive comments on Stiglitz and his new book. 80.______

A

The main point of the book is simple: globalization is not helping many poor countries. Incomes are not rising in much of the world, and adoption of market-based policies such as open capital markets, free trade, and privatization are making developing economies less stable, not more. Instead of a bigger dose of free markets, Stiglitz argues, what' s needed to make globalization work better is more and smarter government intervention. While this has been said before, the ideas carry more weight coming from someone with Stiglitz' s credentials. In some ways, this book has the potential to be the liberal equivalent of Milton Friedman' s 1962 classic Capitalism and Freedom, which helped provide the intellectual foundation for a generation of conservatives. But Globalization and Its Discontents does not rise to the level of capitalism and freedom. While Stiglitz makes a strong case for government-oriented development policy, he ignores some key arguments in favor of the market. " The book' s main villain is the International Monetary Fund, the Washington organization that lends to troubled countries" , Stiglitz' contempt for the IMF is boundless, "It is clear that the IMF has failed in its mission, " he declares. "Many of the policies that the IMF pushed have contributed to global instability. "

B

While parts of this book are disappointingly shallow, Stiglitz' s critique of the market-driven 90' s still resonates, especially when the business page is full of stories about white-collar crime and the stock market seems stuck in a perpetual rut. Even the United States cannot blithely assume that financial markets will work on autopilot. It is testament to the salience of Stiglitz' s arguments that many economists—even some Bush Administration officials—now embrace his view that economic change in the developing world must evolve more with local conditions, not on Washington' s calendar. Without a thorough makeover, globalization could easily become a quagmire. Stiglitz shared a Nobel Prize last year for his work analyzing the imperfections of markets. His main complaint a-gainst Rubin and Summers, who served as Treasury Secretaries, and against Fischer, the NO. 2 official and de facto chief executive of the international Monetary Fund, is that they had too much faith that markets could transform. poor countries overnight. He labels these three men market fundamentalists, who fought to maintain financial sta
