Subject: Questions on shadow day

Mr. Sommersby,

1 am writing to confirm that our company is joining this year's Job Shadow Day. Besides, I'd like to ask some questions we encounter during the preparation for the day.

Firstly, is there a limitation on the number of employees participating in the activity? Since the notice was posted, we have received many responses from our staff to volunteer on December 12. I was wonder if there is a limitation. If so, I would like to clarify things to my staff so as to prevent real disappointment.

Then, we got a list of students who are in the Shadow Day activity on www. SWEA. org, but how are the studenls going to be paired with employees? Do we pair by ourselves and then contact the each specific student or hand in a namelist of our employees to the organizer?

I would appreciate, a quick reply very much for the day is just around the corner and I prefer everything ready and successful. Thank you very much.

Regards,

Bridget Ellesmere

Names in English

In Britain most people have three names. They have a first name, a middle name, (1) a family name. People don't use their (2) name much.

You call your friends or (3) you know well by the first name. (4) people never use Mr, Mrs, or Miss with their (5) names. You can't say "Miss Bridget," for example. You can only (6) "Miss Green." Miss goes with the family name, (7) , not with the first name, Bridget.

British people say (8) first names first and their family names (9) . It's not the same as in Chinese, (10) example—Chen Guoming; a Chinese student says his family name, Chen, first.

(1)

A.or

B.and

C.with

第6题
So much emphasis is placed nowadays on oral skills in all area of work, study and lecture,
that the training course has proved very popular and last year I run a week's presentation skills course at the annual International Summer School.

After a shorter introductory meeting on the Saturday night when Bridget Stevens, Summer School Director greeted all the new students attending a wide variety of courses. And the courses began in earnest with a two-hour session the following morning. Then followed full days, 9:30 a.m.~3:30 p.m., with the examination taking place on the fifth day(Friday).

In order to give the students a change from my voice in this very concentrated week, Irene Randine, a very experienced lecturer, was invited to give two sessions, first on "Voice" and later on "Reading Aloud", both of which were a success.

The group was from a variety of countries. We have required that only fluent English speakers would be accepted and all were competent communicators.

To my mind the first session is always the most important, for it is at that point we take stock of each other, students and lecturer. During the next four days the pressure is intense as we cover the various situations in which speakers might find themselves.

Of course, time has to be given to discuss examination and by Thursday I expect to see a presentation from each of the students.

Why did the training program play such an important role nowadays?

A.Because International Summer School is popular.

B.Because the training program has proved popular.

C.Because so much emphasis is placed on the popular area of work, study and lecture.

D.Because people pay more attention to oral skills in all area of work, study and lecture.

根据下列材料,回答下列各题 Among the governments most interesting reports is one that esti
mates what parents spend on theirchildren. Not surprisingly, the costs are steep. For a middle-class, hnsband-and-wife family (averagepretax income in 2009: $76,250), spending per child is about $12,000 a year. With inflation the familys spending on a child will total $ 286,050 by age 17. The dry statistics ought to inform. the ongoing deficit debate, because a budget is not just a catalog ofprograms and taxes. It reflects a societys priorities and values. Our society does not-- despite rhetoric(说辞) to the contrary--put much value on raising children. Present bridget policies tax parents heavily tosupport the elderly. Meanwhile, tax breaks for children are modest. If deficit reduction aggravates thesebiases, more Americans may choose not to have children or to have fewer children. Down that path lieseconomic decline. Societies that cannot replace their populations discourage investment and innovation. They havestagnant (萧条的) or shrinking markets for goods and services. With older populations, they resistchange. To stabilize its population--discounting immigration--women must have an average of twochildren. Thats a fertility rate of 2.0. Many countries with struggling economies are well below that. Though having a child is a deeply personal decision, its shaped by culture, religion, economics, andgovernment policy. "No one has a good answer" as to why fertility varies among countries, sayssociologist Andrew Cherlin of The Johns Hopkins University. Eroding religious belief in Europe may partlyexplain lowered birthrates. In Japan young women may be rebelling against their mothers isolated lives ofchild rearing. General optimism and pessimism count. Hopefulness fueled Americas baby boom. After theSoviet Unions collapse, says Cherlin, "anxiety for the future" depressed birthrates in Russia and EasternEurope. In poor societies, people have children to improve their economic well-being by increasing thenumber of family workers and providing support for parents in their old age. In wealthy societies, the logicoften reverses. Govenunent now supports the elderly, diminishing the need for children. By some studies, the safety nets for retirees have reduced fertility rates by 0.5 children in the United States and almost 1.0in Western Europe, reports economist Robert Stein in the journal National Affairs. Similarly, somecouples dont have children because they dont want to sacrifice their own lifestyles to the time andexpense of a family. Young Americans already face a bleak labor market that cannot instill (注入) confidence abouthaving children. Piling on higher taxes wont help, "If higher taxes make it more expensive to raisechildren," says Nicholas Eberstadt of the American Enterprise Institute, "people will think twice abouthaving another child. " That seems like common sense, despite the multiple influences on becomingparents. What do we learn from the government report?

A.Inflation increases families expenses.

B.Raising children is getting expensive.

C.Budget reduction is around the corner.

D.Average family expenditure is increasing.
