听力原文:M: Good morning, Professor Zhou. Welcome to our program.

F: Good morning.

M: As a Professor in history and also a Chinese American yourself, can you use a word to describe the history of Chinese Americans?

F: Bitter. You know for many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese Americans with restaurants and laundries. People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice and discrimination that faced them in this country.

M: But why? I remember the first Chinese to reach the United States came during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Like most of the other people there, they had come to search for gold, hadn't they?

F: Yes, they had. In that largely unoccupied land, the men staked a claim for themselves by placing markers in the ground. However, either because the Chinese were so different from the others or because they worked so patiently that they sometimes succeeded in turning a seemingly worthless mining claim into a profitable one, they became the scapegoats of their envious competitors.

M: So they were harassed in many ways? Were they prevented from working their claims, or were there any regulations forbidding them to their claims?

F: Both. The Chinese therefore started to seek out other ways of earning a living.

M: Like doing the laundry or setting up small restaurants?

F: Yes. There were almost no women in California in those days, and the Chinese filled a real need by doing this woman's work. Some went to work as farmhands or as fishermen.

What had Chinese Americans been associated for many years in the United States?

A.Restaurants.

B.Laundries.

C.Gold.

D.Both A and B

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world ev
ery day.

English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, "We come from Hamburg." One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put them between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called "hamburgers". Today, "hamburgers" are sold in many countries around the world.

Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is very interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The explanation, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.

According to the author, English is______.

A.as old as Chinese

B.older than German

C.not so old as Chinese

D.very difficult to learn

听力原文:M: Professor, bow's Chinese Americans' situation today?

F: There are fewer than half a million, only a small fraction of the U.S. population, living chiefly in California, New York, and Hawaii. But they are generally admired for their many remarkable characteristics, and are often held up as an example worth following.

M: When, then, did things begin to change?

F: It was during World War II, when China was an ally of the United States. The Exclusion laws were ended; in 1965, in a general revision of the immigration laws, many more Chinese were permitted to settle here, as discrimination against immigration was abolished.

M: But it seemed that the Chinese had lived apart in their own separate neighborhoods, which came to be known as "Chinatowns".

F: Right. And in each of them the residents organized an unofficial government to make rules for the community and to settle disputes. To this day, certain Chinatowns, especially those of Francisco and New York, are busy, thriving communities.

M: Professor, there are two facts about the Chinese Americans: one is that there is so little juvenile delinquency among them; the other is that there are so many outstanding scholars, scientists, and artists out of their uneducated laborers ancestors. How can we explain these?

F: Well, we may owe little juvenile delinquency to their retaining many aspects of their ancient culture. For example, their family ties continue to be remarkably strong. Even young children cherish the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. Secondly, the high regard for education which is deeply imbedded in Chinese culture, and the willingness to work very hard to gain advancement, are other noteworthy characteristics of theirs. This explains why so many descendants of laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.

How many Chinese Americans are there in the U.S. today?

A.Less than 500,000.

B.More than 500,000.

C.Less than 5,000,000.

D.More than 5,000,000,
