1 One of the good things for men in women's liberation is that men no longer have to pay

women the old-fashioned courtesies.

2 In an article on the new manners, Ms. Holmes says that a perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public as if she were a model. For example, she doesn't need help getting in and out of cars. "Women get in and out of cars twenty times a day with babies and dogs. Surely they can get out by themselves at night just as easily."

3 She also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk. "Historically, the man walked on the inside so he caught the garbage thrown out of a window. Today a man is supposed to walk on the outside. A man should walk where he wants to. So should a woman. If, out of love and respect, he actually wants to take the blows, he should walk on the inside — because that's where attackers are all hiding these days."

4 As far as manners are concerned, I suppose I have always been a supporter of women's liberation. Over the years, out of a sense of respect, I imagine, I have refused to trouble women with outdated courtesies.

5 It is usually easier to follow rules of social behaviour than to depend on one's own taste. But rules may be safely broken, of course, by those of us with the gift of natural grace. For example, a woman is expected to sit in the chair. That is according to Ms. Ann Clark. I have always done it the other way, according to my wife.

6 It came up only the other night. I followed the hostess to the table, and when she pulled the chair out I sat on it, quite naturally, since it happened to be the chair I wanted to sit in.

7 "Well," my wife said, when the hostess had gone, "you did it again."

8 "Did what?" I asked, utterly confused.

9 "Took the chair."

10 Actually, since I'd walked through the restaurant ahead of my wife, it would have been awkward, I should think, not to have taken the chair. I had got there first, after all.

11 Also, it has always been my custom to get in a car first, and let the woman get in by herself. This is a courtesy I insist on as the stronger sex, out of love and respect. In times like these, there might be attackers hidden about. It would be unsuitable to put a woman in a car and then shut the door on her, leaving her at the mercy of some bad fellow who might be hiding in the back seat.

It can be concluded from the passage that______.

A.men should walk on the inside of a sidewalk.

B.women are becoming more capable than before.

C.in women's liberation men are also liberated.

D.it's safe to break rules of social behaviour.

听力原文: It is a matter of common observation that although money incomes keep going up over the years, we never seem to become much better off! Prices are rising continuously. This condition is termed as inflation; the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. We are grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought twenty years ago for $1 now costs well over $ 2. Present indications are that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. ff in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value, it lacks one of the qualities of a good money-stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value, and it is wasting assets so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates the consumer spending, and deters saving.

What is inflation according to the passage?

A.People's incomes keep going up.

B.Prices are not rising.

C.Money becomes less valuable.

D.Money becomes more stable.

听力原文: In the past 20 years, scientists have learned a great deal about sleep and dreams. They have discovered, for example, that sleep and dreams affect the way people feel. A good night's sleep, generally, makes a person happier in the morning.

Dreams also have a strong effect on the moods of people. However, who appears in a dream is more important than what happens. Every person has a special dream character. If this special character appears in dreams, people are happier after sleeping. If there are many people in one's dreams, this has a good effect. A person will wake up happier.

The moods of people affect their performance throughout the day. The level of one's moods rises and fails during the day. The less sleepy people are, the better they perform. And, usually they are more friendly, more aggressive, and more clear-thinking. Someday, scientists hope to be able to manipulate sleep in order to control the way people feel and perform.

What is the passage mainly about?

A.Sleep and dreams.

B.The importance of dreams.

C.The amount of dreams.

D.Moods and attitudes.

their action says another? A facial expression, crossed arms or the way they behave can show what

is really in their mind. This is body language, and we must teach our children to understand and

use it.

We often teach children to be thoughtful when they speak and write, and we also need to teach

them to be thoughtful in their body language. Giving examples is one of the ways to do that. Help

children understand that people use body language most of the time in their life. Where they're

looking when they speak, how they turn their bodies, how they place their arms and so on can give

others important information.

There will be times that people want and need to use their body language. In school or job

situations, understanding body language can make a difference. And using body language in other

situations is also helpful to personal safety and sometimes stops misunderstandings(误会).

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: A good marriage means growing as a couple but also growing as individuals. This isn't easy; marriage has always been difficult. Why then are we seeing so many divorces at this time? Yes, our modem social fabric is thin, and yes, the permissiveness of society has created unrealistic expectations and threw the family into disorder. (11[C]) But divorce is so common because people today are unwilling to exercise the self-discipline that marriage requires. They expect easy joy, like the entertainment on TV, the thrill of a good party.

(l2 [B]) Marriage takes some kind of sacrifice, not dreadful self-sacrifice of the soul, but some level of compromise. Some of one's fantasies, some of one's legitimate desires, have to be given up for the value of the marriage itself. "While all martial partners feel shacked at times, it is they who really choose to make the martial ties into confining chains or supporting bonds," says Dr. Walter. Marriage requires sexual, financial and emotional disciple. A man and a woman cannot follow every impulse, cannot allow them to stop growing or changing.

Why are divorces so common at present?

A.Because it is difficult to maintain a marriage.

B.Because people like watching TV programs.

C.Because people prefer joy to self-discipline.

D.Because our society is permissive towards divorces.
