听力原文:Language is one of the major difficulties when you' re making your home in a new

country. I' m quite good at learning them so this isn' t usually too hard for me. China was different, though. I' d learnt some spoken Chinese before I came but I hadn' t tried to learn to write, so I was pretty nervous about a country where I couldn' t read anything. This was a real barrier because I couldn't read restaurant menus, the destinations on buses, or even road signs. After ten years, I have made much progress — but not without plenty of work. I hope this course will help you to make a confident start and that you, like me, will get out there and enjoy this amazing country.

What does the speaker hope the listeners will do?

A.Find a job

B.Get out of the country

C.Like the speaker

D.Learn Chinese

听力原文: Esperanto was invented as an international language one hundred years ago by a doctor in Poland. His name was Ludovic Zamenhof. Doctor Zamenhof grew up in a part of Poland where people spoke several different languages. He believed the different languages kept people from understanding each other and living peacefully together. He wished that everyone in his part of Poland spoke the same language. In fact, he believed that if everyone spoke a common language, peace could result throughout the world. That is why he gave the world a new language. He called it "Esperanto", which means, in his language "one who hopes."

Doctor Zamenhof tried to make Esperanto so easy that anyone could learn it in one-hundred hours. It is easy to learn because it has only sixteen grammatical rules. Doctor Zamenhof's alphabet is also simple. Each letter has only one sound.

No one knows exactly how many people in the world speak Esperanto. Experts say the number could be as many as fifteen million. For most of the world's people, however, English, not Esperanto, is the second language. But Esperantists continue to spread the world about their language. They hope that Esperanto someday will become the international language for trade, science, and diplomacy.

(26)

A.Different languages prevented people from living peacefully together.

B.Because he believed that people would prefer a new language.

C.Because he believed that people would favor an easy language.

D.Because he thought that his mother tongue was too difficult to learn.

听力原文: Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to find out about the manners of your foreign friends, you will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.

A visitor to India must remember that it is not polite for people to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man obviously shaking his head at another to show that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a rotating movement of the head is to show agreement. In Bulgaria you shake your head to show "yes" and nod your head to show "no".

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs while sitting and talking to someone, even at an important meeting. But doing this will cause anger in Thailand. Also touching the head of an elderly person in Thailand is very impolite.

Knowing about manners is useful when you are traveling, but you also need to know the language used to express the manners.

(30)

A.It is important to master a foreign language.

B.Crossing one's leg is impolite manner.

C.It is important to master the language of a country as well as the manners there.

D.Touching the head of an elderly person in Thailand is very polite.

听力原文: Voice One: A bottlenose dolphin named Maui plays a computer game, helping scientists create a unique language [that] they hope humans and dolphins will understand.

It's not based on human words, but on a specific dolphin sound. Guess which one. Not its bark, or its clicks, made famous by Flipper. Words in this new language are whistled.

Dolphins typically whistle to each other under water, through a special structure just beneath their blowhole. Researchers say their whistles have meaning. For example, each dolphin learns from its mom its own signature whistle. So in human terms when they greet each other, it's not just, "Hi" It's, "Hi, my name is ..."--in this case, Maui.

Ken Marten and his team at Earthtrust in Sea Life Park Research Lab in Hawaii want to better understand how dolphins communicate. So for the next ten years, they will literally whistle while they work, creating this special language.

Voice Two: The rest of my career is dedicated to talking to these guys, so I guess you could call me Doctor Dolittle now.

Voice One: After studying dolphin whistles, Marten invented distinct whistles for various objects with which dolphins are familiar.

Which sound can be thought as dolphin's words?

A.Its bark.

B.Its clicks.

C.Its whistle.

D.Its crying.

听力原文: Conversations are really kind of interesting. I guess it's a kind of hobby of mine to listen to conversations that I can hear in public. It is amazing how different the style, or the tone or the content of different conversations can be and to listen to the differences in the language that people use when they speak to different people.

If you're ever in a bookstore or department store, it's interesting to hear how the same salesperson talks to different people. There're other interesting places to listen to conversations too. I think, and one place that I've found is on bus trips. People often talk to each other as if no one else were there. I guess they think people can't hear their conversations.

Recently I was on a bus, and I was listening to a conversation of two people behind me. I can't really say I was listening. I guess it would have been hard not to hear it. it was amusing to listen to the two people, though, because they were playing a kind of language, uh, word game about states and state capitals. One person would say the name of the state, and the other person would say the name of the capital.

It sounds like a kind of simple game that doesn't involve much language, and you wouldn't think that it would involve very much conversation, but actually this wasn't the case because they were playing this game. They continued to compliment one another and talk about how much they knew about history and how many of the other things that they could or couldn't remember about those places from their trips or from their reading. It was really kind of fun to listen to them.

(30)

A.Criticizing others on bus.

B.Amusing people in pubic.

C.Enjoying talking to people.

D.Listening to people's in public.

听力原文: Making marks on a hook is absolutely necessary for efficient reading. By writing with hand, marking can keep the reader awake and concentrating on his reading, improving his active thinking and help him remember the thoughts of himself and those expressed by the author. It is true that sometimes people read novels or short stories mainly for pleasure and relaxation. But a great book full of rich ideas and beautiful language usually raises and tries to answer some serious basic questions. And such books demand the most careful reading. Putting notes on books not only draws the readers' attention but also gives him a good memory of language and thoughts.

Someone might think that writing and marking in the course of reading will take much more time and slow down reading, it probably will, but reading speed is not a measure of intelligence. Some books should be read quickly and with little effort, while some should be read slowly and with a great effort. The sign of intelligence, in reading is the ability to read different books differently ac- cording to their value. The important point is not to see how much one can finish, but rather how much one has learned and made to be the readers' own knowledge.

(23)

A.Spoiling a book.

B.Measuring reading speed.

C.Decoration a book with lines, signs, etc.

D.Taking notes on a book while reading.
