听力原文: Many people today ask how they can become a great manager. My lecture today will discuss some essential qualities of a great and effective manager.

Generally, a good and effective manager should be very good at the following essential tasks. First, great managers accept blame. When someone from head office visits and expresses displeasure, the great manager immediately accepts full responsibility. In everyday working life, the best managers are constantly aware that they selected their people and should have developed them. Errors made by team members axe in very real sense their responsibility.

Second, great managers give praise. Praise is probably the most under-used management tool. Great managers are forever trying to catch their people doing something right, and congratulating them on it. And when praise comes from outside, they are swift not merely to make the fact known, but to make clear who has earned it. Managers who regularly give praise are in a much stronger position to criticize or reprimand poor performance.

Then, great managers make blue sky. Very few people are comfortable with the idea that they will be doing exactly what they are doing today in 10 years' time. Great managers anticipate people's dissatisfactions.

Moreover, great managers put themselves about. Most managers now accept the need to find out not merely what their team thinks, but what the rest of the world, including their customers, need. So MBWA, i.e. management by walking about, is an excellent thing.

Another important point is that great managers exploit strengths, not weaknesses in themselves and in their people. They see strengths in themselves as well as in other people, as things to be built on, and weaknesses as something to be accommodated, and if possible, eliminated.

The last but not the least, great managers make themselves redundant. What great managers do is to learn new skills and acquire useful information from the outside world, and then immediately pass them on, to ensure that if they were to be run down by a bus, the team would still have the benefit of the new information. So great managers are always on the lookout for higher-level activities to occupy their time, while constantly passing on tasks that they have already mastered.

? Look at the notes about qualities of great managers.

? Some information is missing.

? You will hear part of a presentation by a professor of management.

? For each question 16-22, fill in the missing information in the numbered space using one or two words.

? You will hear the presentation twice.

听力原文:W: Exercise, exercise, exercise... we hear so much about it these days that even the experts can't agree on which exercises are best. Now some doctors are strongly encouraging arm exercises.

M: Arm exercises? I've never heard of that. Is that because our arms are too fat or flabby?

W: Actually, that's not the main reason. They say that arm exercises are an ideal way to become physically fit,

M: But don't arm exercises raise your blood pressure? Seems ... I've read an article about that before. So, that's risky.

W: Not really. That they do, but the article I read mentioned several ways that can compensate for that.

M: Really? How?

W: By adding leg exercise the arms don't do all the work. Arm exercises alone aren't enough to increase metabolism before fatigue sets in. The more of a body that involves in the exercises the better.

M: And in turn, I'm sure that there is a great chance of losing weight, right?

W: Sounds right to me.

M: So, what exercises do the experts recommend?

W: They mentioned quite a few. But some of the more popular ones are cycling with special bicycles that make you use both your arms and legs, and walking vigorously while wearing arms weights.

M: Sounds great. I must try that. You know, I like to walk a lot.

(20)

A.They don't get rid of flabby arms.

B.They can damage arm muscles.

C.They aren't acceptable to most people.

D.They can raise one's blood pressure.

听力原文:M: How did you like our American History class yesterday? W: Well, I did enjoy it, but I didn't exactly buy everything Barnum said either.

M: You mean his view that the early framers of the constitution really didn't want democracy as we know it today?

W: Well "as we know it today" I can accept. But when he states that there was no affinity towards democracy as it was understood then well... to me this just sounds like historical revisionism.

M: Well, surely you have to admit that their concept of democracy was not "democratic". After all, many groups including those without land, women, blacks and many others were shut out of participating in the new system.

W: Yes, but when we look at what we call democracy today there are still groups shut out of being able to vote in America, such as children and convicted people. Also, I think it is fair to say that many groups find it still very difficult to participate. So we don't have complete democracy even today.

M: Yes, but I think he is basing his arguments on the factual transcripts of the early Founding Fathers realizing that they didn't like to use the term "democracy" and some even heaped scorn on it.

W: Perhaps it was just that the term had a different meaning from the way it is used today.

M: But I think it is fair to say that democracy wasn't exactly in fashion. And perhaps it is worthwhile to draw a distinction between liberty and democracy, since the relationship between the two is somewhat blurry.

W: But if you are to say that America was not a democracy in the beginning then you might as well say it is not one today either because the structures of federalism, 3 branch government and checks and balances are basically the same as it was over 200 years ago.

M: You may have a point there, most of the constitution remains intact, mid despite the fact that America is much closer to a true democracy than it was even 50 years ago, it's still a fair way from being ideal.

W: Right, and if you apply the democracy to an ideal you will get nowhere. I wish Barnum was listening to us right now.

M: Well, here's your chance to challenge him right now. I see him coming our way.

W: Are you joking? I still need to get a decent mark in this course and I'm not doing it by making him angry.

(23)

A.She loved it.

B.She disagreed with too much of it to enjoy.

C.She thought it was just so so.

D.She liked the class but disagreed with the Professor.
