听力原文: Cross was what people call a mystery man. We had known him for over five years, ever since he became a member of our modest club, but he had a way of keeping his private life to himself in all but unessential details. We knew his address, though he did not ever invite us to his home, and his age too, but only insignificant matters of this kind. It appeared that he did not have to work for a living as we did in our various ways. He had once hinted at an inheritance on which he managed to live comfortably. He was not, however, a man of luxurious habits: he was not especially well-dressed and he did not even possess a car. At the age of forty-five he was still a bachelor. Since marriage was not a subject he ever discussed, we had no means of finding out whether he regretted the lack of a wife.

Cross disappeared abruptly from our circle and shortly after we came to learn the first really solid facts about our mystery man. From reports that appeared in the newspapers, accompanied by photographs of man who was, without any doubt, our Mr. Cross, it was revealed that he was a most accomplished burglar, operating chiefly in the London area. He had practised this profession for many years, until he was arrested and sent to prison.

(34)

A.Because he didn't tell us his address.

B.Because he didn't tell us his age.

C.Because he didn't invite us to his home.

D.Because he kept his private life a secret.

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.

Michael Jordan, the winner of six NBA titles, is one of the greatest athletes in the world. He is very popular and admirable, and is viewed as the soul of a champion. However, most people are not so successful as Michael Jordan. The problem is not a lack of ability, but will. Michael Jordan, as you know, once suffered a lot as well, but he never gave in. For example, when he was a teenage boy, he was cut from his high school basketball team, but he kept on practicing for hours every day, which showed his work ethic. When he became the greatest player in the history of basketball at the age of thirty-five, he led his aging team to another championship. He set an example and a standard for which, perhaps, mankind has not yet developed a vocabulary.

Michael Jordan is also a genius because he always kept trying, especially when he was in trouble. Thomas Edison once defined genius as one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Many of us, perhaps most of us, do not wish to try that hard. But Michael does not share such reluctance. When he played in a championship game with a fever that would keep most men in bed, although he was physically too weak to stand, by an act of will, he scored thirty-eight points and hit the game-winning shot, Then we cannot help asking urselves= what can we achieve if we try like Michael Jordan in our life?

The way Michael Jordan conducted his life also greatly inspired people, such as the way he spoke and dressed, the loyalty he showed to his coach and team and the dignity and grace with which he dealt with problems, etc. He truly stood high above his peers.

The passage is mainly concerned with ______.

A.the spirit of Michael Jordan

B.the life of Michael Jordan

C.the significance of basketball

D.the history of basketball

In ancient times most cultures and civilizations made some reference to the origin of thei
r languages. However, they did not study language by observation or experimentation--at least as far as we can judge from records that have survived to this day. Most comments on the origins of languages come to us in folk-tales or religious writings, but the Greek historian Herodotus tells us one experiment.

An Egyptian king named Psammetichos wished to find out which was the world's oldest language. To gain this information he decided to isolate two newborn babies until they began to speak. Because they were kept from adults, they would have no patterns to imitate. The king made the assumption that the children would speak what was a natural language--which would be the oldest. After some months the children were heard to make a sound which was recorded as "bekos". This was found to be very similar to the Phrygian word for "bread". Therefore Phrygian (a language once spoken in Asia Minor) was considered to be the first language of mankind. At least by King Psammetichos, and, we may assume, by his court.

The two babies were deliberately kept from adults ______ .

A.to see whether they could learn to speak without the help of adults

B.to prove that Phrygian was the first language of mankind

C.to see whether they would speak the Egyptian language

D.to discover which language would come most naturally

By the time we had completed our preparations, the sky was beginning to grow rapidly light
er, although the sun was not yet above the horizon. We waited unpatiently, hardly daring to move or to whisper to one another. Suddenly, we heard the quick beating of wings and one of the birds we were looking for flew up from the valley beyond. He flied straight to the tree and settled on a thin branch, stripped bare of leaves, which grew diagonally upwards from the main trunk. Immediately he began to clean himself, combing with his beak the long soft feathers which grew from beneath his wings and extended past his tail in a glorious red cloud. Charles's camera, on a trial run, sounded unexcepted loud, but the bird took no notice and continued with his cleaning until at last he drew himself up and shook himself. Then, head held high, he called a single, loud, sharp note which resounded over the valley. He seemed in no hurry to begin his dance, as he continued to call for a quarter of an hour. Two other birds flew from the valley and settled in other parts of the tree. They were hens, uninteresting brown creatures, which, attracted by his call, had come to watch his dance. He paid no attention to them, and continued his unmusical cries, occasionally cleaning some more feathers. The hens kept silent, moving from branch to branch. Once one of them drew too near his dancing ground, but he beat his wings and she drew back.

His calls began to increase frequently, and I carefully fixed the recording machine so that they produced the highest reading on the scale. With electrifying suddenness, the bird lowered his head and throwing his fine tail feather over his back, he ran down his branch, a shaking flame of color, making his loud love cries. Up and down the branch he danced in a state of wild excitement. After half a minute he seemed to get out of breath, for his cries stopped and he danced silently.

The writer of this passage wanted to______.

A.take a photograph of the bird

B.make a recording of the bird's calls

C.catch the bird

D.watch the sunrise
