听力原文: Well, I manage a small branch of a large super-market, and we lose a lot of money through shoplifting. I have to try to prevent it or else I'll lose all my profits. A lot of shoplifting is done by young people, teenagers in groups. They do it for fun. They're not frightened so we have to make it difficult for them. Obviously a supermarket can't have chains or alarms on the goods, so we have store detectives, who walk around like ordinary shoppers, otherwise they'll be recognized. We have big signs up, saying: "shop-lifters will be prosecuted," but that doesn't help much. We've started putting cash desks at all the exits, we've found we have to do that, or else the shoplifters will walk straight out with things. Of course, that worries the ordinary shopper who hasn't found what he wanted. We also use closed-circuit television, but that's expensive. In fact all good methods of prevention are quite expensive, and naturally they make our prices more expensive, but it has to be done, otherwise shoplifting itself will make all the prices much higher, and the public doesn't want that!

M: I've no idea. What about you?
W: How about going out for some exercises?
M: Good idea!
W: Do you like to play tennis?
M: You've just found the right one.
W: You must play a lot!
M: In fact, I play table tennis more. That's my favorite sport.
W: Well, that's fantastic! I think we can go to the court for both these sports.

听力原文:M: Hey, Michelle. Look what I just found. Right here in the sand.
W: A piece of wood? Oh. Driftwood. Interesting shape... Almost like some sort of modern sculpture.
M: Yeah. And feel how smooth it is.
W: Hmm, Must've been in the water a long time. It could've been drifting in the ocean currents for months, or even years.
M: In the currents? Doesn't the wind just blow things around out there?
W: Well, sure. But the currents are always moving, too. Almost like rivers, but underwater rivers, flowing through the ocean.
M: So how do they find out where these currents go? Stick a message in a bottle and throw it in the water?
W: Don't laugh. In fact, I was reading in a science magazine that oceanographers have released huge numbers of bottles into the ocean over the years. They wanted to map out where the currents would carry them.
M: Say, I'll bet-after they found out where all those bottles ended up-they could enter all that data in to a computer and make a pretty detailed model to... to show where the currents go.
W: In fact, they did. And they also found a neat way to test that model. There was a freighter carrying sneakers from a factory in Asia. It was caught in a big storm and thousands of pairs of sneakers got dumped in the Pacific Ocean.
M: Really? What a waste!
W: Yeah. Turns out, though, that hundreds of these shoes started washing up on beaches somewhere near Seattle, just about where the computer models had predicted the currents would carry them.
M: Gee. You mean all that stuff I find on the beaches might be part of some big scientific experiment? I thought it was all just trash!

听力原文: Buried treasure is scattered over every part of the United States. Why don't people find it? As a matter of fact, a great deal of buried treasure is found much more than we ever hear all out. People who find treasure have a habit of keeping it to themselves. Either they are afraid that others might claim it, or they want to avoid paying taxes on it. There are perhaps a dozen unreported treasure finds for each one reported.
Florida has probably yielded more buried treasure than any other part of the United States. The Gulf of Mexico used to be infested with pirates attacking Spanish ships. Often they were unable to dispose of their goods immediately. They packed it in large boxes or sacks and buried it in secret hiding places on the shore. Often they drew a map of the area so that they could come back later and know where to dig.

Detective: What we've learned is the fact that he left the Level One Club which is a drinking club in Neasden Lane about 1: 30 a. m. , and we' re trying to account for movements up till 2:15 because it was about that time he was found by a member of the club, an employee. He was found in the underpass, the pedestrian way, under the North Circular Road. Death was due to multiple head injuries. We understand that there may have been two girls and a man who was drunk in close proximity to the entrance to the subway, who may have seen our man walking in that direction, or any attacker who may have been following him.
Interviewer: About what time would you think that they were there?
Detective: Just after half past one to a quarter to two.
Interviewer: Then in that case the gap you have is really quite short. It's only more or less half an hour or forty minutes.
Detective: In fact, yes, as short as that.
Interviewer: Any idea of what he was wearing?
Detective: Yes, he was wearing, in actual fact, a light-coloured raincoat, grey trousers, black shoes, collar and tie with a metal tie-pin, dark hair, 165cm, fresh complexion.
Interviewer: Is there any speculation that the motive might have been robbery?
Detective: I don't think it is robbery in the circumstances. I'm more inclined to think there was another reason for him to have been attacked.
Interviewer: And how far away from the Neasden underpass was the drinking club?
Detective: Fifty meters.
Interviewer: And at the moment you know of no other people in the area whom you want to talk to, other than the drunk man and the two women who were seen with him or near him at some time?
Detective: Yes. The club closed at half past one and there may have been other people who left the club who went that way. We understand that there were also mini-club drivers parked in the area who may have seen something as well.
Interviewer: As it is, I take it you haven't been able to identify them.
Detective: No, not at this stage.
Interviewer: Well, thank you very much.
