Policeman James left the station just after 8:30 a. m. on Sunday July 5. He had spent a qu
iet night on duty and was looking forward to his rest day. As usual he took a short cut down the path behind Dugby road and after a minute or two he saw a man climbing down a drain-pipe from an open bedroom window of number 25. Silently James crept into the garden. The man reached the ground and was dusting himself down when he felt his arm gripped.

"It's 8:45 on a Sunday morning, "said the policeman, "and this sort of thing seems an unlikely adventure at such a time. Would you mind explaining?"

The man was obviously startled but kept calm immediately. He said, "I know what you' re thinking, officer, but it isn' t true. This is a very funny mistake. " " It' s part of my job to take an interest in unusual events. I think you' ve just left this house in a manner other than the customary one. That may be quite innocent, but I' d like to make sure. "James took out his notebook and a pen. "Name, address and occupation and then, please, tell me what happened. "

"Charlie Lewis, lorry driver, from Nottingham, 52 Brecon Street. My story. . . "" Yes. What were you doing like a fly on that wall, Mr. Lewis? . . . . Well, I had a breakdown yesterday and had to stay the night here. Bed and breakfast. The landlady' s name is Mrs. Crane. She gave me breakfast at seven, and I was out of here in the right way and down at the lorry by half past. It was only when I felt around for a cigarette I found I' d left $ 90 in my pay envelope under the pillow here at number 25. I always put it under my pillow at night. It' s a habit I' ve got into. I even do it at home. . . "

"I see. Why didn't you miss it when you went to pay Mrs. . . What's her name? . . . . I'd paid her last night. You' ve got to pay when you take the room, right? So I came rushing back, but it's Sunday, and she' d gone back to bed, and could I wake her? I rang the bell and banged on the front door for several minutes before I came round here to the back spotting my bedroom window still open. Up I went, then, up this pipe. It' s a trick I learnt in the army. She hadn' t made the bed, and the money was still there. You know the rest, and I hope you believe it because. . . "

"Mr. Lewis, whatever are you doing here? I thought you' d gone one hour and a half ago. "It was Mrs. Crane, speaking from the kitchen window at the corner of the house.

Why was James walking along that path?

A.He usually discovered something suspicious along that way.

B.He had an appointment with a man at number 25, Dugby Road.

C.He chose to go that way by chance.

D.He knew he would get home quicker that way.

听力原文:M: You're back. And right on schedule too. How was your holiday?

W: It was all right, I suppose.

M: You don't sound as though you enjoyed it very much. Where did you go?

W. I went home. I stayed with my family.

M: Where is your home?

W: It's in West Virginia. It's a quite small village in West Virginia. You know, going home really made me think how different my life would have been if I'd stayed there.

M: Why? What would you have done?

W: Well, first of all, I probably would have married the boy I went steady with while I was in high school.

M: Would it have been a mistake if you had married him?

W: It would have been different, that's all. If I had married him, I probably would have stayed there in West Virginia for the rest of my life.

M: Would that have been so bad?

W: I would never have come to the city. I never would have tried to get a job.

M: But you've come to the city and had several jobs.

W: That's true. The thing is that after all these years of working, I am still a secretary or assistant to someone. No transfer. No promotion. It's so annoying and frustrating. I didn't come all the way up to the city for that, did I?

M: Do you think you'll ever go back to West Virginia to live?

W: Someday, maybe, but not until I've had more experience. I'd like to know that I could have real career if I wanted to.

M: Well, the first step in a successful career is to get some work done. Here are some letters that have to be answered right away.

W: All right, I'll take care of them. But you just wait. Someday I might be your boss!

听力原文:W: Don't you have any good news?

M: No. Yesterday I had to stay after school because I was talking during my science teacher's class.

W: You'd better keep quiet during class.

M: Sometimes I do. The day before yesterday, I was very quiet during my history teacher's class and I still had to stay after school.

W: Why?

M: Because I fell asleep in his class, but it was not my fault. His class was too boring.

W: I advise you to take school more seriously. If you don't pass your exam, you'll have to go out and work as a result.

M: But I think working is more interesting than having boring classes every day.

What did the boy often do at school?

A.He was often late for school.

B.He often fell asleep in class.

C.He often stayed after school.

I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write but it was ma
ny months be fore I settled down happily in this Himalayan community.

I wasted a lot of time looking for the ‘typical’ village. Yet no such thing exists. Conditions vary too widely. But the villages I stayed in had much in common——poverty, dirt, and ignorance. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled, suspicious. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a political journalist because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the Third World was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world' s people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first bad to try and share their Way of life.

In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a bumpy road. Then came a rough walk down a steep path to the river. After this I began to climb into the hills. Whenever I stopped to catch my breath, there was a magnificent view. After several hours' walk the village came into view.

After the writer had arrived in India ______.

A.he spent years writing about the place he lived in

B.he took quite a long time finding a suitable place to live

C.he spent years looking for a certain village

D.he lived in a Himalayan community for many months
