听力原文: Manhattan Island is surrounded on the east by the East and Harlem Rivers and on

the west by the North and Hudson Rivers. It links with the other four towns which make up New York City and with New Jersey by means of subways, underground tunnels and bridges which lead into Manhanttan from the surrounding area.

The Brooklyn Bridge was the first suspension bridge to link Brooklyn to Manhanttan. It is also the second oldest bridge in New York. The architect was John Augustus Roebling, who was the chief engineer of the suspended Railroad Bridge at Niagara Falls.

Mis, fortune accompanied the building of the bridge, which took place from 1869 to 1883. The architect died as a result of an accident early during the construction. His son, Washington Roebling, carried on his father's work, using the most advanced engineering techniques of the day. He also fell ill during the construction of the bridge and was obliged to direct the work on it from an apartment window overlooking the site.

Since its construction the Brooklyn Bridge has remained a busy and important passage in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge is 6775 feet long and 1595 feet wide. The suspended part is 3450 feet long and 85 feet wide. It has a clearance of 133 feet above water level. Four huge cables extend across the bridge, supported by two towers, each 272 feet high. Each of these cables is made up of 5700 wires.

听力原文: New York City is the largest city in the United States. Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York City is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. They are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of 59.5 sq km (23 sq mi). It is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Citicorp Center. The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

Manhattan is the center of New York's cultural life. Numerous stage and motion picture theaters are located around Broadway in Midtown, which includes Times Square. The borough is the home of prominent music and dance organizations, such as the New York City Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera Association, American Bailer Theatre, and the New York City Ballet.

In 1945, the United States Congress invited the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York.

听力原文: Something strange happens every year from August 6 to 15 on the West Faronia Island in Greece: thousands of snakes crawl out of the cliffs and caves to gather under the picture of the Virgin in local church. Several days later, these snakes leave the picture one by one.

This has lasted for several hundreds of years. Stranger still, these snakes had cross-shaped patterns on their heads. They crawl here and there under the picture of the Virgin, never hurting anyone. They even let people touch them.

There is a beautiful legend to these snakes. Several hundred years ago, there lived 24 nuns in the Virgin convent on Faronia Island. One day. a group of pirates came invading the land. They tied the nuns with ropes and did insult to them. Unable to tolerate the humiliation, the nuns all committed suicide. They turned into 24 snakes, "Sacred snakes".

The yearly visit of these snakes to the Virgin happens to be associated with the local religious festivals held during these days on this island. That is why these snakes are related to religion. But why these snakes come out on these days instead of any other days, and why they gather under the picture of the Virgin, has remained a mystery.

(30)

A.On the cliffs of an island.

B.In the eaves of an island.

C.Under the holy picture of the Virgin.

D.In the Virgin convent of an island.

听力原文: A $150 million project to replace all of the vertical suspension cables on the 100-year-old Manhattan Bridge will cause occasional weekend disruptions in subway service and require closings of the bikeway and some traffic lanes for parts of the next four years, city transportation officials said this week.

(29) The city's Department of Transportation is preparing to award a contract for the repair work to Skanska, a Swedish company whose American headquarters are in New York. The department notified Skanska last week that its bid, which was just shy of $150 million, was lower than the other four received.

(30) The contract is one of 14 that make up the final phase of a three-decade effort to rebuild the bridge, which connects Lower Manhattan to Downtown Brooklyn. All told, about $ 830 million has been spent repairing the bridge, which suffered from neglect during the city's financial crisis in the 1970s, said Brian Gill, the chief engineer of Manhattan Bridge reconstruction for the Transportation Department.

(31) Skanska has said that it will complete the work, which includes replacing the necklaces of lights that illuminate the bridge's outer cables, in three and a half, years. Mr. Gill said the city could penalize the company if it did not complete the work on schedule.

During that period, subway service across the bridge on the B, D, N and Q lines will be suspended on as many as eight weekends, Mr. Gill said. The schedule for those suspensions has not yet been determined, said Seth Solomonow, the department's spokesman.

29. To which company will the contract be awarded?

30.How many contracts make up the final phase of a three-decade effort to rebuild the bridge?

31.How many years will Skanska complete the work?

(30)

A.A Swedish company.

B.A Russian company.

C.An American company.

D.A Chinese company.

听力原文:New York City is the largest city in the United States. More than 11 million people live in New York and its suburbs. The city stands mainly on three islands that lie at the mouth of the Hudson River. The island of Manhattan holds the heart of New York and many of its most famous sights. Some of the world's greatest skyscrapers tower above its streets. Fifth Avenue is a famous shopping street, and Broadway is known for its theatres. Perhaps New York's best-known sight is the Statue of Liberty, one of the largest statues on Earth. It stands on an island in New York Harbor.

听力原文: Space Adventures, the company that has sent "space tourists" up to the Internati
onal Space Station, is planning a new mission: rocketing rich people around the dark side of the moon. The first mission, dubbed DSE-Alpha (for Deep Sea Explorations) , could happen as early as 2008, company CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Eric Anderson said at a Manhattan news conference. The first traveller would be only the 28th person in history to orbit the moon--not counting the cosmonaut of the Russian spacecraft that will make the flight--and the first person to orbit the moon in more than 33 years. The trip will offer the chance to see the Earth rise from lunar orbit and a view of the far side of the moon, never seen from Earth, from an altitude of 62 miles. The price tag is every bit as steep: $100 million for each of the two planned passengers, which includes costs such as planning the mission, modifying a modern Soyuz TMA spacecraft for the trip and completing manned and unmanned test flights before the space tourists make their trip.

What new mission is Space Adventures planning?

A.Sending space tourists up to the International Space Station.

B.Rocketing rich people around the dark side of the moon.

C.Landing rich people on the moon.

D.Sending 28 people to the moon.

听力原文:Hello, Nicole. This is William. Hope everything is going well in Port Chester. I'
m in Albany now. I'm calling for two reasons: first, to let you know that I'll be in Port Chester on the twenty-ninth. I'll be taking the train down from Albany. Which leads me to my second point: do you think you or someone could pick me up at the Croton train station? I just looked at the train schedules and I realized that to get to Port Chester from Albany, I would have to go down to Penn Station in Manhattan and then back up to Port Chester from Grand Central Station. It would be great if I could avoid that extra time and travel. If not, I'll manage, but please give me a call on my cell phone when you have a chance and we can figure it out. Thanks. Bye.

Why has William called Nicole?

A.To tell her about a meeting

B.To tell her his travel plans

C.To ask her when she will leave Albany

D.To ask when she will arrive in Port Chester

听力原文: Purse snatching is an increasingly common crime. There are estimated 50 to 100 purse snatchings each month in the New York City subways. One of the favored techniques is to stand between two subway cars and, as the train starts pulling out of the station, reach out and pull free a woman's purse.

Recently, a crime analysis officer for the New York Police Department found that purse stealing in Manhattan's top restaurants was up 5 percent over the previous year. Where a woman puts her purse on a vacant chair at a table or at her feet beside her chair, she is inviting a purse snatcher to take it. Purse snatchers often work in pairs. When a target in a restaurant is sighted, one of them will create some kind of disturbance to gain the victim's attention. While the woman is looking away from her table, the actual snatcher will lift the purse. A popular technique is for the thief, man or woman, to carry an umbrella with the curved handle down. The umbrella handle suddenly hooks the bag and in an instant it is on the thief's wrist or under the coat over his arm if he is a man, and on its way out of the restaurant. Police advise that women in restaurants keep their purses either on their laps or on the floor between their legs.

Other purse snatchers who operate in theaters are called "seat tippers", vietimizing women who put their purses down on an adjacent empty seat. Yet others specialize in snatching purses from ladies' rooms. When a woman is in a toilet stall, her purse should never be placed on the floor or hung on the coat hook on the door.

(33)

A.Officials from the New York Police Department.

B.Officials from the New York federal government.

C.Officials from the New York local government.
