Animals do many useful and entertaining jobs. (38) Dogs are particularly valuable in guiding the blind (a trained dog can learn never to cross a busy street when cars are coming, even if his master commands him to do so), protecting property, finding lost people, and hunting criminals. Horses are used in guarding herds, carrying men in lands where there are no roads, and helping farmers plow fields. Pigeons have long been used to carry message. Wild animals from the jungles, forests and seas are very popular performers in circuses and movies. People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.

The first thing a dog is taught is to obey. It should not take too long for him to learn commands. Simple orders, such as "sit, lie down, stay there, come here" can even be taught by a child.

Training a dog to be a watchdog often produces unexpected results. Some dogs quickly learn the difference between unwanted people and friends. This is because their masters welcome friends and invite them into their houses. However, some dogs will always attack the postmen who come to deliver letters. One explanation for this behavior. is that, although the postman comes to the house frequently, he never enters the house. Therefore, the dog thinks the postman is someone who is not wanted, but keeps coming back anyway.

Masters of dogs who attack postmen can easily show the dogs that the postman is a friend and the dog does not need to treat him as an unwanted person. A dog is quite ready to do what his master wishes. And a dog is always happy when he is praised for proper understanding.

A dog feels the happiest if, after he has worked well,______.

A.he gets a good piece of meat

B.he gets praise from his master

C.he is allowed to be by himself

D.he is taken for a walk in the evening

听力原文: It's not known exactly bow or why humans domesticated the first dogs. But once tamed, people found them useful and they learned how to selectively breed for certain traits to create animals fit for specific task. Most likely, the first dogs were used for hunting and protection. Some were bred to chase down prey, others to herd livestock. Today's most popular breed, the Labrador, was originally bred by fishermen to haul nets and retrieve fish. But at some point, humans also started to breed dogs for looks and for companionship. Brian has wondered why of all domesticated animals, dogs seem closest to their owners.

Somehow during the long relationship together, dogs learn how to communicate with humans. And they pass the skill down to each succeeding generation. It turns out puppies can understand human gestures even if they've been raised in the wild, while wolves raised in captivity just don't get it. It's a unique skill that perhaps only dogs possess.

What special tasks were not the first dogs bred for?

A.Hunting and protection.

B.Chasing prey.

C.Herding livestock.

D.Keeping accompany.

听力原文: Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long
been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

But some people who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform. of rod coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation between hunters and hunt saboteurs. Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.

This year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes

A.for recreation.

B.to limit the fox population.

C.in the interests of the farmers.

D.to show off their wealth.

听力原文:W: Mr. Bacon, what is your job exactly?

B: I'm a vet, looking after sheep, horses, dogs, cats. We even have lions and tigers at the zoo.

W: What sort of pets do people bring to your clinic?

B: Mostly dogs and cats but then we have snakes and parrots and all other animals people keep as pets.

W: Snakes? Why do you think people keep snakes?

B: I quite like snakes, but I wouldn't want one as a pet. Um...some people are very keen on them.

W: Maybe they keep snakes to frighten others. All right, do you think people spend more money on their animals than their children?

B: It depends on the people. Some are very good with their animals, some treat them far better than they would their kids, and unfortunately some are cruel with the animals.

W: What experience have you had of people who treat their animals too well?

B: Lots of animals come here with lipstick marks on the head. We regard that as a specific sort of condition here.

W: Are animals good for people's health?

B: Well, they seem to help old people. These people see one person every two days, but their animal is with them all day, and it's a companion.

W: Above all, why are you interested in your job?

B: Maybe the animals sometimes attack me and there is much paper work. The thing I like best is to deliver new animals. It always amazes me one moment you have one mother and the next moment you can have a pile of animals.

According to Mr. Bacon. people keep snakes because

A.they like them as pets.

B.they are curious of them

C.they use them to frighten other people.

D.they keep them to do research.

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.

What is taboo food? Taboo food is that people avoid for health, cultural or religious reasons. Certain religions forbid the eating of certain types of meat. For example, Muslims and Jews cannot eat pork. Eating shellfish and bird of prey would also go against the religious laws of the Jews. In India, the cow is holy, thus it is not eaten.

Some food taboos are not based on religion but on traditions and customs of the society, and sometimes also on the appearance of the food. Neither dogs nor insects are eaten in Norway, Germany, the U. S. and most other western countries, but dogs are considered food in China, and insects are eaten in many countries on the planet. Dogs are a food taboo in the western world because people consider these animals their pets, their friends. Insects are not eaten because the general opinion is that these are dirty animals one doesn't want to digest.

The food taboo of one's culture is learnt through childhood. The taboos based on religion are not easy to change. But new types of foods are introduced on the market. They are often viewed as against traditions and therefore avoided. But later some taboos begin to change when the people have grown used to eating some kind of food and maybe also found new uses for it in their regular dishes,

In the following which is NOT the reason some food is prohibited?

A.Religion.

B.Health.

C.Custom of society.

D.Not delicious.

听力原文: In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At lea
st 43% of the US homes have pets of some sort. Exotic creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House.

Beneath the furry luxuries, there lies a basic American belief: pets have a right to be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare organizations exit in America. These provide care and adoption services for homeless and abused animals. Veterinarians can give animals an incredible price. To pay for the high-tech health care, people can buy health insurance for their pets. And when it's time to say good-bye, owners can bury their pets in a respectable pet cemetery.

The average Americans enjoy having pets around, and for good reasons. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person's blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help stimulate the owners' softness. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide companionship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: They give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good topic of conversation.

About ______ American homes have the habit of keeping pets.

A.43%

B.57%

C.75%

D.25%

听力原文: Of the thousands of different kinds of animals that exist in the world man has learned to make friends with an enormous number. Some are pets, and offer him companionship; some give him protection, and some do hard work which man cannot do for himself.

Trained and tamed for many generations, domestic animals are not accustomed to wandering in search of food and shelter. They look to their masters to provide for their needs, and as long as these are supplied, they are content to do what their masters require.

All domestic animals need proper food. It must be suitable for them, sufficient in quantity, fresh and clean. Some people feed a pet dog or cat on odds and ends of table scraps, and then wonder why the animal seems listless and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeeding is as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health.

Cats and dogs do not need a place of their own, although a very big dog is better off in a doghouse than in the house. The cat, an independent creature, is very good at finding the safest and most comfortable spot when she wants to take a nap. But cows and horses and similar animals must have proper stables, clean, dry and well ventilated.

Even well cared-for animals may sometimes fall ill. If this happens, the wise master seeks the best advice he can get. All sorts of medicines and treatments are available for sick animals, and in some countries organizations exist to provide them free or at a cheap price. Useful, friendly, hardworking animals deserve to have some time, money and attention spent on their health.

(33)

A.Looking for food by themselves.

B.Being fed properly.

C.Overfeeding or underfeeding.

D.Living on people's odds and ends of table scraps.
