Never Quit! The Ups and Downs of Running a Family Business
picked up the book Never Quit! The Ups and Downs of Running a Fami|y Business thinking that I could read it between flights, hoping that in the pages of the book,I'd find some little piece of sales wisdom to restate at the upcoming sales manager's meeting that's where I was flying. And so I began reading in the terminal.
Even after the plane settled into its altitude,I couldn't put Never Quif!down.I continued to read, even forgetting to make a few notes in a margin. The notes were already made. The author has bullet list after bullet list of helpful pointers. But what absorbed me most was the story of running a family business.Gray offered personal glimpses of challenges as well as successes.and then held them both up as examples of opportunity for positive growth.
This is a business book, yes. However,it is a family business book. There are the real stories of real people. But the real art of this book is the encOuragement it provides to small business owners to define core principles and when those are challenged,to use those core beliefs to find another method to achieve the desired right results. And so,when a business owner meets with something they believe is beyond their control, they will redefine success or the ways they might getthere. They will neverquit.
The focus on customer service also came at a goodtime for me;this is a huge talking point at our company, which is struggling to maintain excellent customer service at a time when sales are(thankfully)outpacing customer service rep availability, and so customer interactions are being timed and evaluated. It's a challenge, but I found something in almost every chapter of Gray'sbook that boils customer service techniques down to something as simple as a customer-friendly greeting. It makes it seem do-able.
This book is going to be popular with family business owners everywhere. It is well-written,but more important.it is a good read.I've decided to buy a copy for everyone in our sales and service department, and to keep it in my briefcase to refer to again and again.
The reviewer decided to read the book because
A.one of his friends told him lhe book was excellent.
B.he was sure he would get some useful advice.
C.he thought he might collect some information for the meeting.
The next rapid jump in population started perhaps 10,000 years ago, when men began to keep herds, plow and plant the earth. Once again when initial productivity gains had been absorbed, the rate of population growth abated.
These two episodes suggest that the third great change, the present rapid growth, which began in the West between 250 and 350 years ago, may also slow down when, or if technology begins to yield fewer innovations. Of course, the current knowledge revolution may continue without foreseeable end. Either way contrary to popular belief in constant geometric growth—population can be expected in the long mn to adjust to productivity.
Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Human population expands at a straight upward trend.
B.Population growth has shown ups and downs in demographic history.
C.Population growth can not be regarded as a social failure.
D.Increase in population is related to productivity.
What are the symptoms? It might seem logical that the most obvious symptom of depression would be sadness, but many depressed children say they don't feel sad or gloomy. Interestingly, one of the key signs of depression in children is [34] irritability(易怒). Children may be depressed if [34] they have trouble getting along with other kids and family members or have dramatic swings in mood. Other signs of depression include lack of energy, inability to concentrate, [34] poor performance in school, a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, and frequent complaints about physical ailments like headaches or stomachaches.
If your child exhibits any symptoms of depression, ask yourself three questions: [35] Is this behavior. new? Is it long-lasting (going on for several weeks or more)? Are the symptoms interfering with his ability to function at home, in school, or with his friends? If you answer yes to any of those questions, you should probably have your child evaluated by a child or adolescent psychologist, psychiatrist, or other licensed mental health professional trained to work with children and adolescents.

判断正误:Reporting sales figures
After a slow start at the beginning of the year when sales started out at $ 9 million and rose to $ 10 million for the month of January, there was a slight increase in February when sales went up to $ 14. 5m. Then in March we had a dramatic increase when sates shot up to a staggering $ 34m. This was after the big Trade Fair in Hong Kong, where we managed to promote our new products and capturé the SE Asin market: The-increase continued in April when sales peaked at $ 38. 5m. There was slight fall for the month of May, which was only to be expected after the rush of interest after Hong Kong, and figures hit the $ 30m. mark. They seem to stabilise there, as the June figures were much the same at $ 31. 4m. We have every to expect them to continue at this rate for the next few munths, but our target for the end of the year is to chase the $ 40m+ mark with a very aggressive marketing policy over the summer and the autumn.
16. The product under discussion is not stated.
17. The year started with a rush.
18. January saw a decline in sales.
19. In February sales declined slightly.
20. In March sales reached $34m.
21. The Hong Kong Trade Fair made little effect on sales.
22. In May the sales figures exceeded those of March.
23. The June figures were similar to the May figures.
24. If the business reaches $ 40 +, the target for the end of the year will have been reached.
25. There would be more ups than down in a chart of the January to June' figures.
Express air shipping isn't in a death spiral. But recession-spooked consumers and manufacturers are less willing to pay for overnight delivery, which is three to five times more expensive than ground shipping. Even when they pay, satisfaction is not guaranteed. After September 11, security scrutiny of air freight can result in long delays—which means roads may actually be faster. That's another reason why the number of packages shipped by air domestically fell 7.6% in 2001. And even with the recovery under way, air express volume is forecast to rebound by just 3% this year. "There's a mass migration from air to trucks," says Jerry Levy, marketing director for air shipper Bax Global Inc.
The industry's giants are ready to roll with the change. In the past several years, FedEx and UPS have rebuilt their ground networks as a series of regional hubs able to deliver most packages overnight within a 700 mile radius. "Now, we can move a package in the most expedient way ground or air or a combination of both," says Tom Weidemeyer, UPS' chief operating officer and president of its airline unit. New technologies—including bar coding, satellite tracking, online billing and status—are easing the transition. Even impatient customers are willing to do without overnight delivery "if they know when a shipment will arrive," notes Brian Clancy, a principal at industry consultant Merge-Global Inc.
The grounding of so much freight is solidifying the lead of UPS and FedEx. "We're able to keep business in the family that we might have lost," says William Margaritis, FedEx's corporate vice-president for worldwide communications. His company has invested $700 million in a new ground-delivery network while deferring the delivery of 123 aircraft. And strict new security requirements have forced the passenger airlines to stop carrying packages for the U.S. Postal Service, notes Richard Lung, director of revenue management at United Airlines Inc.'s cargo unit. And small shippers, whether air or truck, lack the capital to build hybrid networks. "We got caught with our pants down," says Levy of Bax Global, which added a ground-delivery unit in 2000. Slow and steady really does win the race.
We can learn from the beginning of the text that
A.customers used to attach importance to fancy packaging.
B.there is a radical change in customers' considerations.
C.it is high time that delivery service would better quality.
D.customers now tend to choose speed over cost savings.

听力原文: The Spice Girls were an amazingly successful singing group which rose to the top of the pop music charts in the mid-1990s. After that they had ups and downs. And like most pop groups, it is unlikely that they would stand the test of time. However, the story of how they became successful is very interesting.
In fact the girls, who applied to the ad, and formed the first group, were not really the Spice Girls. The fa'st band was called Touch, and it did not include Emma Button. A girl called Michelle Stevenson was one of the Original stars chosen--and she did not last. Now known as "Unlucky Spice", Michelle Stevenson was replaced by Emma Button in July of that year, and the band was renamed "Spice".
It was not until the following March that the group sat down with their new manager, Simon Fuller. Fuller taped short extracts of different songs by the girls, and sent them to various big record companies. Several companies tried to do a deal, and the Virgin label finally won; they signed a contract worth an estimated two million pounds. After this, they were renamed the Spice Girls.
In March 1996, two years after the advertisement, the five Spice Girls--Jeff, Mci B, Mel C, Victoria and Emma--gave the performance of their lives. One of them met a TV producer in a ladies toilet, and they at once gave her a demonstration of what they could do. She was so impressed by their singing that she asked them to sing on her TV show. They were an immediate hit. Within a month, Wannabe came out--in July 1996---and within two weeks it was top of the charts. It stayed there for two months.
