听力原文: Our environment is being polluted faster than nature and man's present efforts can prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more motor vehicles, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man-by his desire for a modern way of life. We make "increasing industrialization" our chief aim. For its sake, we are willing to sacrifice every thing: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, so pollution has be come a serious problem.

Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going and why? It reminds one of the stories about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we're lost and don't know where we're going." The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when applied to our modern society.

(30)

B.We have more and more industry.

C.There are too many developing countries.

听力原文:Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed

听力原文: Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes.

To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with no intelligence. On the other hand, a child lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is, to some degree, something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we put two identical twins in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find difference in intelligence developing, and this certainly indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part.

(26)

A.Birth.

B.Environment.

C.Education.

D.Blood type.

听力原文:In a way, all of us are on a spaceship, the planet Earth. We move around the sun

听力原文: In a way, all of us are on a spaceship, the planet Earth. We move around the sun at 18 miles per second and never stop. On our spaceship we have five billion people and a limited supply of air, water, and land. These supplies have to be used carefully because we can't buy new air, water, or land from anywhere else.

The environment on our planet is a closed system Nothing new is ever added. Nature recycles its resources. Water, for example, evaporates and rises as visible drops to form. clouds. This same water returns to the earth as rain or snow. The rain that falls today is actually the same water that fell on the land 70 million years ago.

Today, the Earth is in trouble. Factories pour dirty water into our rivers. Many fish die and the water become unhealthy for people to drink. Cars and factories put poisons into the air and cause plants, animals and people to get sick. People throw bottles and paper out of their car windows, and the roadside becomes covered with all sorts of wastes. Over the years, people have changed the environment, and we have pollution.

To continue to survive, we must learn how to use the Earth's resources wisely. We have to change our habits and stop dumping such enormous amounts of industrial waste into the water and air. We must cooperate with nature and learn better ways to use, not to abuse, our environment.

(33)

A.Because both have a limited supply of air, water, and other resources.

B.Because the Earth moves around the sun as fast as a spaceship.

C.Because we can travel to outer space.

D.Because the Earth never stops moving.
