听力原文:W: Good morning, I'm Victoria Porter. How can I help you?

M: Good morning, my name is Frank. I have to complete the enrolment form, but I'm not sure about some aspects.

W: (19)Let's refer to the handbook and see how I can help you. What's your firs problem?

M: Well, I can't decide which program to take.

W: Do you want a science or arts?

M: Arts. But I can't decide a social sciences, a humanities, and an education.

W: You needn't make that decision now. (20)You can leave it until the end of the first year.

M: I see. Then I need to select my courses carefully.

W: Yes. First, foundation course. All students must take one foundation course as part of the requirement of the first year. It's on page 21. Have you read the description?

M: Yeah, I'd like to do Al09 Futures. It looks so interesting.

W: But as a foreign student, I suggest you consider A114 Australia and its People.

M: What about this, Structure, Thought, and Reality, or Life in the Universe? The description of both says they will help me to develop skills of argument and analysis.

W: Actually all the foundation courses are designed to do that. But All4 will help you gain a better understanding of the country you live in.

M: That's true. And it's worth 6 points while each of the others only 3. OK, I'll do A114.

W: It's very important to keep your points in mind when selecting courses. Normally full-time students enroll for 12 credits each semester or 24 each academic year. However, (21)if your enrolment drops below 9 points in any one semester, you won't be considered full-time.

M: What would happen then?

W: Well, you won't be eligible for student visa.

(20)

A.The enrolment form.

B.The handbook.

C.Australia and its People.

D.The description of the courses.

"Vern in the Hills" 50th Anniversary Celebration, Bradley, MO

"Vern in the Hills" is celebrating its 50th year in production. A light-hearted production staged by the City Theater in Bradley, MO, "Vern in the Hills" has been performed at the Thompson Outdoor Theater each summer since it first opened on May 28, 1956. Few theaters in such small cities are able to sustain a production over a course of so many years.

"Somehow we've become a classic, and part of the fabric of the community," says artistic director David Frey, "going to 'Vern in the Hills' on a summer evening is just part of life here." Mr. Frey is only the third director the production has seen in its fifty-year history. A fact that, Mr. Frey says contributes to the play's success.

"Vern in the Hills" does seem to be part of the fabric of the community. We loved the production. We observed several families with three generations having picnics and watching the play. It was clear that most people had seen it before. If you ever have the chance to see "Vern in the Hills," you will quickly understand how it became a classic.

Where is "The New Dream" playing?

A.Peterson, KY

B.Saratoga, NY

C.Landsdale, CA

D.Los Angeles, CA

Economists say confidence in the U.S. economy has improved since the financial crisis began, but it is still at a very low level. This week, the New York-based Conference board said its consumer confidence is about half of what it was this time last year. As people struggle to deal with job losses and dwindling retirement funds, their outlook of the country's economic situation remains pessimistic during the biggest consumer spending time of the year.

Claire Rusk, a shopper in Alexandria, Virginia, says she is changing her holiday spending habits this year because of the economic crisis, even though her nine-year-old son expects Christmas as usual.

"His list is longer than ever, so l was listening to how you tell him that his list better be shorter this year," she said.

Rusk says the crisis is forcing her to think hard about her purchases.

"I'm just going to be more careful. I'm going to make a list. I'm not going to randomly shop," she noted. "I usually just go out and shop, but I'm going to have a plan before I go out this year."

And Rusk is not alone. Kilmer Caban, a shopper at the Pentagon City Mall outside Washington, D.C., says he is going to try to spend the same amount for gifts as last year, but he knows some of his family members are cutting back.

"My sister and her husband say they will not be spending as much, due to the cost of gas and the economy and everything," he explained.

Some retail store owners, who normally make the bulk of their profits this time of year, are hopeful that the holiday shopping season will still be able to pull them out of the recent slump. Victoria Birkett, the owner of' Embellishments, a gift store in Alexandria, Virginia, says she's a little worried, but she is looking forward to the holiday rush.

"In this retail business I have cut my order down a little bit from prior years, but I can see people are being a little more cautious in their spending," she said. "I'm a little concerned, but it is just before Thanksgiving, so I'm hopeful that things will pick up just after Thanksgiving."

Birkett says her gift shop has not felt the effects of the economic crisis as much as other store owners she knows because it is close to Washington D.C. and benefits from tourism.

Alexander McCall, a manager at Game Stop, in the Pentagon City Mall remains optimistic as well.

"People are a little bit more careful with their money now, the spending has gone down a little, but I think all in all its going to be a good business holiday for everybody," he said.

Despite the slump in consumer confidence McCall still expects demand for some items to rise next month.

How are the retired people influenced by the economic situation?

A.They are forced to retire at an earlier age.

B.They have to cope with reduced pensions.

C.Their spending power has increased to record high.

D.Their confidence has dropped to the lowest level.

SECTION B INTERVIEW

Directions: In this section you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Questions 1 to 5 are based on an interview. At the end of the interview you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following five questions.

Now listen to the interview.

听力原文:Jenny: I'm longing to hear about this tour, Victoria. You must be terribly excited.

Victoria: Oh, I am. I...I've never been to America before, so I'm really looking forward to it. I thought of going fly-drive.

Jenny: Fly-drive?

Victoria: Yes. You know, you...you can arrange for a car to be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive. You book everything this end including the plane tickets.

Jenny: Sounds simple enough. Are you going to, then?

Victoria: Well, I'm a bit worried about driving on the other side of the road and having to, so I decided it would be better to go on a more organized holiday.

Jenny: What do you mean by "organized"?

Victoria: Well, everything is arranged by a tour operator, a more organized trip. You know, you are taken around and shown where to go and what to do. I would probably miss half of the sight otherwise.

Jenny: Mm, where are you going anyway?

Victoria: Orlando. It's in central Florida.

Jenny: Sounds OK. Are you going on your own?

Victoria: Yes, I don't mind that. There will be other people on the tour. I'm sure to make friends. You know, I like meeting new people. Here, let me show you the brochure.

Jenny: It looks pretty packed. Do you really have time to do all these things?

Victoria: Oh, yes. It's all planned. Let's see. Day one, we arrive in Orlando. And after we've settled in our hotel, we have the afternoon free. I guess we could have a look around and do what we like.

Then, day two, we go to Disney World.

Jenny: You mean Mickey Mouse and all that?

Victoria: Yes, it's a kind of gigantic funfair with all the Disney characters and there is also the Epcot Centre, uh, a sort of city of the future with all the latest developments. I've always wanted to go there, anything I saw on television. And then, day three, we go to sea world.

Jenny: Whatever is that?

Victoria: Well, there have aquatic displays and performing dolphins and even a whale.

Jenny: Oh, that's quite unusual. Let's see what you do on day four. Oh, it seems to be free.

Victoria: Yes, that's right. And then on the next day we go to the Kennedy Space Centre. That should be interesting.

Jenny: I wonder how much they let you see. That's where NASA is, isn't it?

Victoria: Well, you shouldn't think you'd be able to see the latest spacecraft, but you might be allowed to glimpse some Mission Control, and perhaps how they receive message from satellite. Anyway, I bet you'll know a lot more about the space than you ever knew before.

Jenny: Mm, I quite envy you going there. Somehow, I find it quite hard to believe that people will one day live out in the space.

Victoria: Oh, I don't. I'll give it a try if I have the chance. Now, what's next? Oh, yes, day six. Circus world.

Jenny: Circus world. That sounds fun. I love going to the circus.

Victoria: So do I. It states here, circus world, see, take parts, enjoy. I wonder what "take parts" involves.

Jenny: You'll soon find out.

Victoria: And day seven, we come home. Just as well, I'll be broke by then.

Jenny: I suppose you've been saving up for ages for this holiday.

Victoria: Well, I did think of putting in some extra hours at work, but the money wasn't really worth it after tax, and it would have meant I didn't get home until late. Dad offered to lend me some money but I know he really needs it himself. In the end, I went to see my bank manager. He was terribly nice, so here I am, all booked up and ready to go.

Victoria has eventually decided to go on a______

A.fly-drive holiday

B.car-trip

C.two-city holiday

D.conducted tour

Snowboarding

Victoria Jamieson from Britain started snowboarding at 20. She is now 23 and has won many competitions in this sport. We spoke to her when she was at a snowboarding competition last week in Switzerland and asked her why she started the sport.

'I've always liked all kinds of sports, especially skiing, and it seemed natural to start snowboardlng. It doesn't take long to learn and you can become really good in a few months.'

We asked her if she had to do a lot of practice. 'Well, in winter I snowboard in the mountains every day from 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m. I also run and go hiking. But I just love doing it all! I like the competitions and being in the mountains. It's so beautiful. But free-riding, that's doing what you want when you're not in a competition, is the best thing in the world for me.'

We asked her what is important when you're learning. 'You can learn quickly but you need lessons. It's also important to have the right clothes so you don't get wet because, to begin with, you spend a lot of time falling down!'

Victoria was visiting Switzerland for a competition.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say
