A feature of US education that we have not yet discussed is continuous classroom interaction between teacher and students. From Los Angeles to New York, and from Chicago to Houston, educators believe that students master information by discovering it for themselves. They believe that teachers do not actually teach, but simply help students learn. In this view, learning takes place through a process of challenging old ideas and asking questions. The faculty member aims to exchange ideas with students, rather than simply tell them what they should know.

The concept of constantly exchanging ideas may seem strange to you at ftrst. Perhaps you come from a country where people believe that whatever is written in a book must be true, and that teachers are always right in matters of learning. If so, you will probably find the United States system disquieting. Of course, American students know that their textbooks are mostly right and that their teachers are better informed than they are. But they think for themselves and their teachers expect them to ask questions and challenge ideas. The point, again, is not that Americans have the "right" approach to learning, but that the interactive classroom is a strong feature of US education.

Comparatively few courses in the university classroom are so clearly organized for interaction. Nevertheless, the course in which a professor lectures steadily to hundreds of silent students is relatively rare in the United States. Enrollments are often limited (many classes will have fewer than 30 students), so that all students have a chance to participate. Where the lecture format is necessary, as in a freshman chemistry course, the large class meets once or twice a week, then divides into small group meetings. The lecture is used to present information efficiently — for example, through slides and demonstrations as well as actual lecturing — but group meetings provide important sessions where homework can be reviewed and questions answered.

Which is the best summary of the information in the text?

A.How to adapt to classrooms in the United States.

B.Classroom in the United States: advantages and disadvantages.

C.Features of classrooms in the United States.

D.Students-teacher relationship in the United States.

To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains.
But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun!

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century B.C.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and suthority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.

By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style. during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn' t until the twentieth century that women' s umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colors.

In 1848 a strange skull was discovered on the militm7 outpost of Gibraltar. It was undoubtedly human, but also had some of the heavy features of an ape ... distinct brow ridges, and a forward projecting face. What was this ancient creature7 And when had it lived? As more remains were discovered, one thing became clear: this creature had once lived right across Europe. The remains were named Homo Neanderthalensis (Neanderthal man) an ancient and primitive form. of human.

The classic Neanderthals (尼安德特人), who lived between about 70,000 and 30,000 years ago, shared a number of special characteristics. Like any biological population, Neanderthais also showed variation in the degree to which those characteristics were powerfully built, short and stocky (矮壮的), with the lower parts of their arms and legs short in relation to the upper parts, as in modern peoples who live in cold environments. Neanderthal skulls were distinctive, housing brains even larger on average than those of modern humans, a feature that may have had more to do with their large, heavy bodies than with superior intelligence. Seen from behind, Neanderthal skulls look almost spherical, but from the side they are long and flattened, often with a bulging back. The Neanderthal face, dominated by a projecting and full nose, differed clearly from the faces of other hominids(原始人类), the middle parts appear to be pulled forward (or the sides pulled back), resulting in a rather streamlined face shape. This peculiarity may have been related to the greater importance (in cultural activities as well as food processing) of the front teeth, which are large and part of a row of teeth that lies well forward in the head; it may reflect a reduction in importance of certain jaw muscles operating at the sides of the face, or it may reflect an adaptation to cold. Whether it results from any or all of these three factors or from other undiscovered causes, this mid-facial projection is so characteristic that it unfailingly identifies a Neanderthal to the trained eye. Neanderthal teeth are much more difficult to characterize: the front teeth are large, with strong roots, but the back teeth may be relatively small. This feature may have been an adaptation to cope with heavy tooth wear.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.The eating habits of the Neanderthals.

B.A comparison of various prehistoric populations.

C.The physical characteristics of the Neanderthals.

D.The facial features of the Neanderthals.

If those "mad moments"--when you can't remember what your friend has told you or where you
left your keys--are becoming more frequent, mental exercises and a healthy brain diet may help.

Just as bodies require more maintenance with the passing years, so do brains, which scientists now know show signs of aging as early as the 20s and 30s. "Brain aging starts at a very young age, younger than any of us had imagined and these processes continue gradually over the years," said Dr. Gary Small, the director of the Center on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles. 'Tin convinced that it is never too early to get started on a mental or brain-fitness program," he added.

In his book, The Memory Bible, the 51-year-old neuroscientist (神经学家) lists what he refers to as the 10 suggestions for keeping the brain young. They include training memory, building skills, reducing stress, mental exercises, brain food and a healthy lifestyle.

"Misplacing your keys a couple of times don't mean you should start labeling your cabinets. Memory loss is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Our brains can fight back," he said.

Small provides the weapons for a full-scale attack. Simple memory tests give an indication of what you are up against and tools such as "look" and "connect" are designed to make sure that important things such as names and dates are never forgotten. "So if you wanted to learn names and faces, for example, you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing facial feature, maybe a high eyebrow," said Small. "You associate the first thing that comes to your mind. I think of the actor Warren Beatty, so I create a mental picture of Warren Beatty kissing her brow."

Small admits it may sound a bit strange but he says it works. "Mental exercises could be anything from doing crossword puzzles and writing with your left hand if you are right handed or learning a language. It could be anything that is fun that people enjoy doing," he added.

The "mad moment" in the first paragraph refers to the time when we ______

A.don't listen to our friends

B.have lost our important things

C.have some mental problems

D.have a poor memory

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of languag
e is a mystery. All we really known is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations - the things they bring up before our minds.Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style.Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar .(239words)
