Arsenic, a naturally occurring poison and carcinogen found in ground water, is strongly li

nked to adult-onset diabetes, U. S. researchers said on Tuesday. Odorless, tasteless, colorless and easily soluble in water or wine, arsenic has long been a feared poison. A heavy dose is detectable in a corpse, but researchers say small amounts of arsenic may sicken people gradually.

Dr. Ana Navas-Aeien and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore found a " relatively strong " association between commonly found levels of arsenic in urine and type 2 diabetes in a study of American adults. " It seems there is maybe no safe level of arsenic. " Navas-Acien said in a telephone interview. " Worldwide it's a huge problem, " she said. " As water becomes a scarce resource. the situation becomes even more serious. "

Arsenic raises the risk for cancers of the bladder, lung, kidney, skin and, possibly, the pros tate, Navas-Acien said. The 20 percent of nearly 800 study participants who had the most arsenic in their bodies, a tolerable 16. 5 micrograms per liter of urine, had 3. 6 times the risk of developing late-onset diabetes than those in the bottom 20 percent, who had 3 micrograms per liter. Levels of arsenic were 26 percent higher in people with late-onset, or type 2, diabetes than those without the disease, the study found.

The U. S. government sets a limit for drinking water at 10 micrograms of arsenic per liter, which is exceeded in the water consumed by 13 million Americans who mostly live in rural areas that rely on wells to bring up ground water, the researchers wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Arsenic contaminates drinking water for millions of people in Bangladesh, parts of Central Europe, Chile, Argentina and the western United States, where ground water is the source of drinking water and the land has higher concentrations of arsenic.

Overall, 7. 8 percent of Americans are believed to have diabetes, although some do not know it. At least 90 percent of cases are the type 2 variety, in which the body loses its ability to use insulin properly. Navas-Acien said arsenic may play a significant role in diabetes incidence, but it is difficult to say how much. Arsenic can accumulate in the body, and can ruin the body's ability to use insulin and perform. the vital task of converting blood sugar into energy. Normally, insulin fits into cells via molecular doorways called receptors, which in turn signal the cell to move glucose inside, but arsenic enters the cell and somehow blocks the activity. Seafood is another source of arsenic, but the organic form. found in shellfish and some fish has a carbon molecule attached and poses no risk to health, she said.

According to the passage, arsenic contains______.

A.smell

B.taste

C.poison

D.color

听力原文: Napoleon Bonaparte was murdered by arsenic poisoning and did not die naturally o
f a stomach cancer, according to a new toxicological study which attempts to end long running historical controversy.

"The latest analysis suggests a criminal intent," said Dr. Pascal Kintz, a toxicologist who regularly gives expert evidence in court cases, and who conducted a new study on Napoleon's hair.

For International Napoleonic Society (INS) spokesman Jean-Claude Damamme, the new study by Dr. Kintz has produced "the definitive proof of the criminal poisoning of Napoleon.'

Napoleon died aged 51 in 1821, on the island of St Helena in the south Atlantic, where he had been ban ished after his military defeat by British and Prussian forces at Waterloo.

A previous analysis of Napoleon's hair, conducted by Dr. Kintz in 2001, had found abnormally high levels of arsenic.

However, supporters of the natural death theory said the arsenic could be explained by environmental factors such as the winemakers' custom at that time of drying their casks and basins with arsenic.

The shrinking size of the emperor's trousers was also used to support the death by stomach cancer theory in a Swiss study which concluded that the emperor lost more than 11 kilos during the last five months of his life.

Dr. Kintz in his latest study used sophisticated new chemical techniques to analyze hair samples, taken by Napoleon's servant Abraham Noverraz and General Bertrand, who was deported to St Helena with the emperor.

The toxic form. of arsenic, used for centuries as rat poison, was found in Napoleon's hair samples at 37 to 42 times above the normal level in the new study.

"I can't imagine Napoleon fed himseff rat poison, even ff he WaSh't a gourmet," joked Damamme of Montreal-based INS.

"The arsenic was in the 'spinal cord' of the hair, which implies that it came from the blood and food ingested," he said.

Damamme further discounted the wine theory saying Napoleon "drank little, at the most one glass per day, and then mixed it with water."

"Somebody in his circle gave him arsenic in small doses to poison him little by little to avoid another violent uprising by those who still supported the emperor in France," Damamme said.

It had been believed that Napoleon Bonaparte ______.

A.died of arsenic poisoning

B.died of a stomach cancer

C.was killed by British army

D.was murdered by Prussian forces

Each year, millions of people in Bangladesh drink ground water that has been polluted by n
aturally high levels of arsenic poison. Finding safe drinking water in that country can be a problem. However, International Development Enterprises has a low-cost answer. This non-governmental organization has developed technology to harvest rainwater.

People around the world have been harvesting rainwater for centuries. It is a safe, dependable source of drinking water. Unlike ground water, rainwater contains no minerals or salts and is free of chemical treatments. Best of all, it is free.

The rainwater harvesting system created by International Development Enterprises uses pipes to collect water from the tops of buildings. The pipes stretch from the tops of buildings to a two-meter tall storage tank made of metal. At the top of the tank is a so-called "lust-flush" device made of wire screen. This barrier prevents dirt and leaves in the water from falling inside the tank.

A fitted cover sits over the "first-flush" device. It protects the water inside the tank from evaporating. The cover also prevents mosquito insects from laying eggs in the water.

Inside the tank is a low coat plastic bag that collects the water. The bag sits inside another plastic bag similar to those used to hold grains. The two bags are supported inside the metal tank. All total, the water storage system can hold up to three-thousand-five-hundred liters of water. International Development Enterprises says the inner bags may need to be replaced every two to three years. However, if the bags are not damaged by sunlight, they could last even longer.

International Development Enterprises says the water harvesting system should be built on a raised structure to prevent insects from eating into it at the bottom. The total cost to build this rainwater harvesting system is about forty dollars. However, International Development Enterprises expects the price to drop over time. The group says one tank can provide a family of five with enough rainwater to survive a five-month dry season.

People in Bangladesh can use ______ as a safe source of drinking water.

A.ground water

B.rainwater

C.drinking water

D.fresh water
