听力原文: In the United States, boys and girls start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they graduate from secondary school.

Most children go to public elementary and secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay directly for their children's education because tax money supports the public schools. If a child attends a private school, his parents pay the school for the child's education.

Today about half of the high school graduates go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are expensive, however. Almost half of the college students in the United States work while they are studying. When a student's family is not rich, he has to earn money for part of his college expenses.

Gates urged lawmakers to find ways to keep foreign students in the United States, saying if the country is going to invest in educating them, it should also benefit from that investment by encouraging them to work here.

He urged the federal government to invest more money in education and training, and in research and development (R&D). "Federal research funding is vital. Crates suggested an increase of 10 percent annually in U.S. funding for research for the next seven years. He also urged more teacher training and higher math curriculum standards. He said the hation should set a goal of doubling the number of science, technology and math graduates by 2015.

听力原文: In the past few years, millions of Americans have become suddenly enthusiastic about the bicycle as if it were a great new invention. Annual bicycle sales doubled between 1960 and 1970, and there are nearly 70 million bicycles in the United States today.

Of course, the bicycle has been around for more than 160 years and this isn't America's first bicycle passion. A wave of bicycle enthusiasm swept the land in the late 1800s and bicycle production was up to two million in 18917. Then with the coming of the automobile, bicycle declined, and for decades remained popular only with children and a few adults.

Now, a national concern with air pollution and physical fitness has brought the bicycle back to the forefront, particularly with adults. More than eight million bikes were sold in the United States last year, a third of which bought by adults. But the year before, only 15 percent of new bicycle sales were for adults.

(33)

A.Nearly 7 million.

B.Nearly 17 million.

C.Nearly 70 million.

D.Nearly 77 million.

听力原文: The United States has the largest economy in the world (32). The size of an economy is usually described in terms of the Gross Domestic Product. The Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, is the value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year. In 2004, the United States had a GDP estimated at close to 12 million million dollars. What percentage of that was agriculture (32) (33)? The government says just 9/10 of one percent (33). Farm workers make up an even smaller percentage of American labor: 7/10 of one percent.

In 2004, almost 20 percent came from industry--and almost 80 percent came from services. The number of farms continues to decrease in America, whereas farm earnings have risen to record levels in recent years. Agricultural productivity continues to increase because of new technology and methods(34). But the Agriculture Department estimates that 9 percent of farm income last year came from government payments. That number is expected to decrease in the future.

Exports have provided American farmer farmers with an average of about 25 percent of their money for the last fifteen years. Canada and Mexico are two of the three biggest markets for American farmers. In fact, in 2002, Canada replaced Japan for the first time as the top buyer of American agricultural exports(35). The Department of Agriculture says exports to the European Union are slowing. But exports to other countries within the Americas and to Asia are growing.

(33)

A.American agriculture.

B.American industry.

C.American GDP.

D.American economy.

听力原文: To get us started this semester, I'm going to spend the first two classes giving you background lectures about some basic cinematic concepts. Once you are a little more familiar with basic film terminology, we will be ready to look at the history of movies in the United States. You will be expected to attend showings of films on Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock at Jennings Auditorium, that's our lab. Then during our Wednesday seminar, we will discuss in depth the movie we saw the night before. We're not covering silent movies in this course. We will begin with the first talking motion picture, The Jazz Singer, released in 1927. The next week we'll be looking at The Gold Digger of 1933, a piece that is very representative of the escapist trend in films released during the Depression. Some of the films we will be watching will probably be new to you, like Frank Capra's Why We Fight. Others you might have already seen on TV, like Rebel Without a Cause starring James Deane, or Stanley Cooper's Doctor's Strange Love. However, I hope you will see even familiar films with new eye. In the last three weeks of the course, we will be watching films from the 1980s, and you will choose one of them as the subject for an extensive written critique. We will talk more about the requirements of the critique later in the semester.

(33)

A.To look at the history of movies in the United States.

B.Arrangement for the movie course.

C.Looking at The Gold Digger of 1933.

D.Watching Frank Capra's Why We Fight.
