听力原文: Before you start to read, you guess what the author is going to tell you. One of
the real pleasures we get from reading mystery stories is guessing who did it and how the criminal was caught. Guessing is just as important, however, in reading a newspaper, magazine, or required reading in textbooks. When you guess, you alert your mind to a challenge. You look at the title or chapter heading or any other clues such as pictures or graphs, and you guess what the material will tell you. Then you are involved. The thought game has started. You may not be right and win the mental challenge, and that is good. It is good because when you lose this mental game and are wrong, your ability to understand and remember what the author said will be greatly increased. It sounds like we are saying, "It is all right to be wrong," and that is exactly what we are saying in connection with guessing. We learn and remember more from our mistakes than from things we get right.

Readers guess what the book is going to tell them by reading the following EXCEPT _________.

A.the price of the book

B.the title of the book

C.the pictures of the book

D.the author of the book

Your intelligence varies from season to season if you are like most people. You are probably much sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A famous scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of most people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring men's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be good time to take a long vacation from thinking!

Ellsworth laid his conclusion on ______.

A.records of changes in his own intelligence

B.work with people in different climates

C.records of temperature change

D.all of the above

SQ3R

A Proven method for effective textbook reading is the SQ3R method developed by Francis Robinson. The first step is to survey (the S step) the chapter by reading the title, introduction, section headings, summary, and by studying any graphs, tables, illustrations or charts. The purpose of this step is to get an overview of the chapter so that you will know before you read what it will be about. In the second step (the Q step), for each section you ask yourself questions such as “What do I already know about this topic?” and “What do 1 want to know?” In this step you also take the section heading and turn it into a question. This step gives you a purpose for reading the section. The third step (the first of the 3R’s) is to read to find the answer to your questions. Then at the end of each section, before going on to the next section, you recite (the second of the 3R’s) the answers to the questions that you formed in the question step. When you recite you should say the information you want to learn out loud in your own words. The fifth step is done after you have completed step 2, 3, and 4 for each section. You review (the last of the 3R’s) the entire chapter. The review is done much as the survey was in the first step. As you review, hold a mental conversation with yourself as you recite the information you selected as important to learn. The mental conversation could take the form. of asking and answering the questions formed from the headings or reading the summary, which lists the main ideas in the chapter, and trying to fill in the details for each main idea.

The passage implies that the SQ3R method_______.

A.needs to be proven

B.leaves much to be desired

C.turns out to be practicable

D.cannot be used by every reader
