Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they provide him with wood and other prod

ucts; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. (78) In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil--allowing the rain to sink in--and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls oh hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces; the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.

What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage?

A.They help him make money.

B.They give him wood and other products.

C.They help him prevent droughts and floods.

D.They give him shade.

Threes are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent drought (干旱) and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man bas not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers. Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieced, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation. Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich topsoil in which crops grow. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert. Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can __________ . A. Keep him from the hot sunshine

B. enable him to build warships

C. make him draw quick profit from them

D. protect him from droughts and floods

It’s a great pity that __________ .A.man is only interested in building empires

B.man is eager to profit from trees

C.man hasn’t realized the importance of trees to him

D.man hasn’t found out that he has lost all trees

Sooner or later the forests will disappear __________ .A.unless a country has a plenty supply of trees

B.unless people stop cutting down their trees

C.unless all people are taught the importance of planting trees

D.unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting them

When there is a heavy rain, trees can help to prevent floods, as they can __________ .A.keep rain from falling down to soft ground

B.cause the soil to allow rainwater to sink in

C.prevent the soil from being washed away

D.make the topsoil stick together

The word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means “__________”.A.to wash away

B.to make wet

C.to make stay together

D.to improve

Sports and games make our bodies strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us healthy. But these are not their only use. They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together. In tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain~ The brain then has to decide what to do, and to send its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where it ought to go. All this must happen with very great speed, and only those who have had a lot of practice at tennis can carry out this complicated chain of events successfully. For those who work with their brains most of the day, the practice of such skills is especially useful.

Sports and games are also very useful for character-training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage, discipline and love of one's country; but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child's character as what is learned by experience~ The ordinary day-school cannot give much practical training in living, because most of the pupils' time is spent in classrooms, studying lessons. So it is what the pupils do in their spare time that really prepares them to take their place in society as citizens when they grow up. (16) If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.

When we play tennis we have to______.

A.use, first, our eyes, then the brain and finally the muscles

B.make our eyes, brain and muscles work almost at the same time

C.use mainly the arms and legs to hit

D.use mainly the muscles so that the ball is met and hit back

In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the chil-dren happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago-so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interestedrather than giving them actual instruction.

The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co- operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for mak-ing people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of educa-tion. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.

According to the passage, the American elementary education is supposed to make children______.

A.sensible and sensitive

B.competitive and interested

C.curious and friendly

D.happy and co-operative

Advertisement can be thought of "as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertisement aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform. and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. (78) Other ways of in creasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement.

(79) There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. How ever, if large—scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.

It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to in crease demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. (80) What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.

Advertisement is often used to ______.

A.deceive customers

B.increase production

C.arouse suspicion

D.push the sale
