The word itself tells what "windfall" means - something blown 【C6】______ by the wind, such as trees, or fruit blown from trees. But the word has 【C7】______ a special meaning. This meaning - getting something unearned - was first used in medieval England.
This is how it started: At that time much of the land was in the hands of 【C8】______ barons. The rest of the people, commoners, lived and worked on their vast estates. They planted the seed, cared for the farm animals and harvested the crops. Not all the land, however, was used for fanning. Every land baron kept a large private forest for 【C9】______ deer and wild boar.
When hungry, the people sometimes would kill the animals in the lord's forest for food. And there were times when they might cut down trees for fuel. So, strong laws were passed to protect the forests and the animals. 【C10】______ were severely punished. But there was one way people could get wood from the forest. If they found "windfalls", they were free to take them for use as fuel in their homes. And that is the meaning that has come down to us - something good gotten by luck or 【C11】______ .
The common people of old England, often hungry and cold, must often have prayed for a good strong wind. Critics today 【C12】______ that the oil industry has also been praying for something just like it -- some political or military 【C13】______ that might produce a windfall -- a rise in oil price and profits.
The oil companies deny that this is so. In Congress, critics of the oil companies have proposed a 【C14】______ on such profits. The debate on rising oil prices will go on for some time, and 【C15】______ likely we will hear more and more about windfall profits.

Birds deserve credit not merely for demonstrating flight was possible, but for providing templates for the shape of aircraft wings. The wings of birds suggested the pattern for leadingedge wing slots that improve ascent at slow speeds and for conical cambered wingtips that increase lift and stability. Other characteristics of bird wings, such as a trailing edge flap to aid in smooth landings, were not recognized as important until they had been designed independently by aeronautical engineers. Considerable research effort in aeronautics could probably have been saved by more thorough analysis of bird flight.
The insect world has also contributed significant ideas in the realms of navigation and guidance. In order to aid airline navigation during take-offs and landings under adverse weather conditions, engineers developed a system for locating the sun when it was hidden by clouds through observing polarized light—light which travels in a single direction. The research was instigated(鼓励,激发)after studies of honey bees demonstrated that they used this mechanism to determine their location when the sky was darkened. In another credit to the insect world, the evasive guidance systems of certain missiles use angular acceleration detectors modeled after the multi-lensed eyes of houseflies which amplify subtle movements by splitting images into a mosaic(马赛克)resembling a large display of televisions tuned to the same channel.
Even entities which never take flight themselves are responsible for guiding the hand of aeronautical engineers. The winged seed of a palm tree was the model for an early glider, and the single-winged, autorotating maple seed was the prototype for a means of air-dropping cargo by parachute.
The author argues that money for aeronautical research money could be invested more efficiently if______.
A.more advanced products were used in airplanes
B.more research was devoted to studying bird flight
C.greater efforts were directed towards shape designs of aircraft wings
D.greater emphasis was put on guidance systems

Answer the following four questions. Haliburton Mills, Inc. is a large producer of men’s and women’s clothing. The company uses standard costs for all of its products. The standard costs and actual costs for a recent period are given below (Exhibit 1) for one of the company’s product lines (per unit of product): During this period, the company produced 4,800 units of product. A comparison of standard and actual costs for the period on a total cost basis is given below (Exhibit 2). There was no inventory of materials on hand to start the period. During the period, 21,120 metres of material were purchased and used in production. The denominator level of activity for the period was 6,860 hours. Exhibit 1Exhibit 2What is the direct material price variance for the period?

The Most Beautiful City in America
It has been called the most beautiful city in America. It also is the subject of a very popular book about murder. The story of Savannah, Georgia, is our report today.
Savannah, Georgia, is not huge. It is only the 3rd largest city in this Southern state. It has about 140 thousand people. Yet few American cities have protected their past as well as Savannah. It has beautiful old houses. It hasparks with trees and colorful flowers. A visit to Savannah today shows that life was like in the Southern United States 200 years ago.
English settlers established the city of Savannah in 1733. They were led by General James Oglethorpe. General Oglethorpe and 120 settlers landed at Yamakaroo bluff on the Savannah River. They chose the place for the city of Savannah on a hill above the river. It was 29 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean.
General Oglethorpe decided to make Savannah as beautiful as a city could be. He designed the streets in anunusual way. Many did not cross each other. Instead, they ended in large open square areas. There are 21 suchpublic squares in Savannah. They have grass, trees, flowers and statues. They also have places for people to sit and enjoy the beauty.
In the 1700s Savannah became a busy port city for exporting farm products. In 1793 Eliwhiteney was teaching on a cotton farm near the city. He invented a machine that removed seeds from the cotton plant. Until then the seed had to be removed by hand. The work was very hard. Eliwhiteney's invention was called the "cotton gin". It greatly improved the ability to produce cotton.
The cotton gin made cotton the most important product in the American South. And it increased importance of Savannah as a port city. Savannah became the world's leading market for cotton. The Savannah Cotton Exchange set the price of cotton around the world. The city became rich. Rich people began to build large beautiful houses. The city continued to grow richer until the early 1860s. That is when America's Nortliem states fought the rebel Southern states in the Civil War.
One of the most famous Northern generals was William Sherman. He led union troops to seize control of rebel territory in the South. General Sherman captured the city of Atlanta. From Atlanta he marched his troops through the heart of Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean. It was known as Sherman's March to the Sea. The Union troops burned all the houses, farms, animals and food supplies on their way. The purpose was to destroy popular support for the rebellion of the Southern states. General Sherman said, "The Union must make old and young, rich and poor feel the hard hand of war."
The people of Savannah learned what General Sherman had done to the rest of Georgia. They did not want the same thing to happen to them. So they offered to surrender their beautiful city ff he promised not to bum it. General Sherman accepted the offer. In December, 1864, he scm a message to President Abraham Lincoln in Washington. It said, "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift—the city of Savannah." Sherman's gift included 150 heavy guns, ammunition and 25 thousand bales of cotton.
The Civil War hurt Savannah's economy. And years of growing nothing but cotton damaged the soil. An insect called the boll weevil destroyed the plant. By 1920, little cotton was left. During the 1900s, manufacturing took the place of cotton farming. Savannah's shipping industry continued to grow. However, many old houses were tearing down, or they fell apart. One visitor said the city was like a beautiful woman with a dirty face.
In the 1950s some citizens of Savannah became angry when more old houses were being threatened by development. One company wanted to destroy a house to build a parking area for cars. A group of 7 women decided to save the house. They asked people for money. They collec
