There are still some remote places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for a fee. We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to paper. I was reminded of that as I read Nicholas Delblanco’s Fathering, an often exasperating novel, because it is so needlessly obscure and reveals so much talent and so little disciplining of that talent.
