I have been teaching for longer than I care to say, and always offer a course for enteri
ng freshmen. And Ive discovered something quite elemental: all young people have knowledge-thirsty minds that can be awakened and encouraged to examine the world they inhabit in.【M1】______ So why do we hear so many professors describe their pupils so hostile to learning? Ill stipulate the obvious:【M2】______ colleges want good students. Because by that, they【M3】______ generally mean highly SATs and GPAs. Sadly, this【M4】______ expectation continues at college where, as Harvards Harvey Mansfield states, professors believe "that what theyre doing the research on is exactly what students【M5】______ need to know. How best to get more students into college and get them thinking? A start would be to abandon the constrictions of academic fields. I know of a class that a【M6】______ professor invites the students to ponder human nature. They cites Alexander Hamilton, who wrote that human【M7】______ beings are "ambitious, vindictive, and rapacious." And then Thomas Jefferson, who held that "morality, compassion, and generosity are innate elements in the human constitution." This is a discussion worth of a【M8】______ college course, in which every one of us can bring information and insights to the analysis. This can also happen in the sciences. Thus theres a geology course that starts the professor saying, "After this semester, you 11【M9】______ never look at a rock in the same way again." Of course, the students are expecting to put in a lot of hard work. But【M10】______ teachers like that make them willing to do it.

e been under a lot of pressure lately. W: Whats up? M: Ive got a million things to do. Im busy at work. Im working on the house too, you know. Im trying to fix it up. I need to finish it before winter. Just lots of deadlines. W: Any way I can help? M: Thanks, but not really. Its just things I have to do. W: Well, you need to manage that stress a little better. Are you getting any exercise? M: Who has time? W: You really should ride a bicycle to the store, or walk to work a couple of days a week, or go swimming at the community centre. It helps me to get exercise when Im busy. M: That is a good suggestion. Its just the time, you know. Im always thinking of what I should be doing. W: No wonder you cant sleep. A lot of people learn to meditate or learn yoga. Meditation and yoga are supposed to be good ways to deal with stress. M: Yoga? Maybe Ill call the community centre. They might have some classes there. W: You know, another thing you can do is to take vitamins. You use up a lot of vitamins and you dont get them in your meals all the time. They wont help the stress, but they might help your body handle it better. You really should take vitamins every day. M: Yeah, I should get some. Thanks. W: How about going out with Rosa and me this Friday? Itll do you good. M: You know, youre right about all of this. Lets go somewhere Friday night, have dinner, see a movie. Thatll be fun. 听力原文: As Managing Director of our company Ive been asked to say a few words to you
today about the way the company is organised. At the top above me, theres the Board of Directors. Their job is to administrate the company, make general policies, and so on. There are two kinds of Directors, actually. One kind is what we call non-executive Directors, which means that they are standing in various parts of the business world and are in a position to help the company to succeed. They only appear when there are meetings of the Board, and some of them are on the boards of other companies at the same time. But the second lot of Directors — the Executive Directors — are full-time employees of the company. Most of them are managers of our various departments. The absolute head of the company, of course, is the Chairman of the Board. He is appointed by the Board, and his job is to take the chair at meetings of the shareholders and the Board of Directors, and to represent the companys interests at outside functions. He does not take much part in the running of the business. He leaves me to get on with the job. Mind you, not all chairmen are like that. Our last one was a real pain, always wanted everything done in his own way and he kept on interfering. Then theres me, the Managing Director, or MD for short — as long as you dont think Im a Doctor of Medicine. Now, my job is to coordinate the policies decided by the Directors and see that they are carried out. I do this through the various managers of departments. Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard. 16. What is the main topic of the talk? 17. Who is responsible for chairing the meetings of the shareholders? 18. What is MD short for?17.

A.The Chairman of the Board.

B.The Managing Director.

C.The General Manager.

D.The Executive Director.
