Organic food: Why?

1. Europeis now the biggest market for organic food in the world, expanding by 25percent a year over the past 10 years. So what is the attraction of organicfood for some people? The really important. thing is that organic sounds more"natural". Eating organic is a way of defining oneself as natural, good, caring, different from the junk-food-eating masses.

2. Unlike conventionalfarming, the organic approach means farming with natural, rather than man-made,fertilisers and pesticides. Techniques such as crop rotation(轮种)improve soil qualityand help organic farmers compensate for the absence of man-made chemicals. As amethod of food produc- tion, organic is, however, inefficient in its use oflabour and land; there are severe limits to how much food can be produced. Also, the environmental benefits of not using artificial fertilisers are tinycom- pared with the amount of carbon dioxide emitted(排放)by transportingfood.

3. Organic farming is oftenclaimed to be safer than conventional farming. Yet studies into organic farmingworldwide continue to reject this claim. An extensive review by the UK FoodStandards Agen- cy found that there was no statistically significant differencebetween organic and conventional crops. Even where results indicated there wasevidence of a difference, the reviewers found no sign that these differenceswould have any noticeable effect on health.

4. The simplistic claimthat organic food is more nutritious than conventional food was always likelyto be misleading. Food is a natural product, and the health value of differentfoods will vary for a number of reasons, including freshness, the way the foodis cooked, the type of soil it is grown in, the amount of sunlight and raincrops have received, and so on. Likewise, the flavour of a carrot has less todo with whether it was fertilised with manure(粪便) or something out of a plastic sack than with thevariety of carrot and how long ago it was dug up. 5. The notion that organic food is saferthan "normal" food is also contradicted by the fact that many of ourmost common food are full of natural toxins(毒素). As one research expert says : "People thinkthat the more natural something is, the better it is for them. That is simplynot the case. In fact, it is the opposite that is true: the closer a plant isto its&39;natural state, the more likely it is that will poison you. Naturally, many plants do not want to be eaten, so we have spent 10,000 years developingagriculture and breeding out harmful traits from, crops. "

阅读理解
Richard Wagner was a German musician who lived in the mid-19th century. He gained fame by

writing operas, a form of performance combining singing, music on

instruments , and drama.

Wagner's lif'e and work have been very controversial(引起争议的). While he  wrote  excellent

music, many people think his operas are too dark and serious, lacking the fun in most operas written

before his time.

Wagner,on the other hand, thought the opera of his time was too simple. He wanted to make opera

a serious form of art that combined drama and music to telldeepstories that would have a strong effect

on the audience.

Some people thought Wagner's new kind of music was too different from the operas they were used

to hearing. Wagner agreed with them. In fact, he didn't call his works "operas" at all but using a German

word that means " Musical Festival" or " Musical Play" .

While many people today still do not like Wagner's operas, they cannot deny that Wagner has had a

lot of influence on opera as a form of art. Wagner invented the tradition of turning off the lights before

starting a play. He also was the first person to make the whole audience sit down for an entire play.

Today, almost all operas are performed in this manner.

Wagner as a man was even more controversial than Wagner as a writer of music. He hated Jewish

people , slept with his friends' wives, and made many people angry-lots of things we would today think

of as evil. Some would say he was a good musician, while others hold that he was a bad musician. But it

would be difficult to say he was not an important person in music: and in the world.

paragraph three?

A. The ocean is very deep.

C. It is not easy to tell the meaning of this poem, because the poet is very deep.

D. We had the deep issue resolved last week.

3. Which of the following is not a way in which Wagner's works were different from normal operas

before his time?

A. Wagner called his works "Musical Festival".

B. Wagner used a combination of drama, music on instruments, and singing.

C. Wagner turned off the lights before starting a play.

D. Wagner made the whole audience sit down for an entire performance.

4. Which of the following does not support the point that the author makes in the last sentence?
A. Few musicians have been affected by Wagner's works.

B. Most writers of opera today think opera as a serious form of music.

C. Today, all operas are performed with the lights off before starting and the audience seated.

D. Wagner's music had a big influence on Adolf Hitler.

Genetically-modified (GM) foodstuffs are here to stay. That’s not to say that food produced by conventional agriculture will disappear, but simply that food-buying patterns will polarize: there will be a niche market for conventional foodstuffs just as there is for organic food.It may even be that GM food will become the food of preference because consumers come to appreciate the health benefits of reduced pesticide use.

Currently there are some 20,000 chemicals in use, but the scientists only have detailed information around 1,000 of them.To see the advantages of GM food you have only to consider the recent press revelation that the average lettuce receives eleven pesticide applications before it reaches the supermarket shelf.I’m sure chemicals and their role in disease will become a big issue in the 21st century as the population of the developed world worries increasingly about its health.

The reason GM food will not go away is that we need a three-fold increase in food production by the year 2050 to keep pace with the world’s predicted population growth to ten or eleven billion. It’s not just a question of more mouths to feed either. What is often forgotten is that all these extra people will take up space, reducing the overall land available for agriculture.

The world has 800 million hungry people.Until now, food supplies have been increased by improved varieties, pesticides and artificial fertilizers: the green revolution. Now we’re on the edge of a new one: a genetic revolution.

It may well be that in the long term it is the developing world that benefits most from GM food.It is true that for the next years or so GM crops may be too expensive.

6. According to the passage, food supplies have been increased by all the following except_____________.

A.pesticides

B.artificial fertilizers

C.improved varieties

D.transportation

7.How many chemicals are still less familiar to the scientists?()

A.20,000.

B.1,000

C.19,000

D.21,000.

8.Why will people prefer GM food in the future?()

A.Because it uses less pesticides.

B.Because it is much cheaper.

C.Because the production is increased.

D.Because it is organic food.

9.Which of the following is NOT true?()

A.By 2050, the world population will grow to ten or eleven billion.

B.In the 21st century, GM food will take the place of conventional food.

C.More and more people will reduce the overall land available for farming.

D.More and more people will consume more food and occupy more space.

10.The author’s attitude towards GM food is _______.

A.negative

B.positive

C.critical

D.uncertain
