听力原文: When was the last time that you were able to make a long-distance call for free? If you said "never", you probably have not been introduced to VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. But, is this new technology as efficient as its counterpart, analog telephone service? Since the demand for world-wide communication has grown, the internet has become the most popular way of communicating. Although Communication via e-mail seemed to be the cheapest way to do business with those overseas, it wasn't always the most effective. Verbal communication is the best way to build strong relationships and eventually," close the deal". When compared to analog phone service, VOIP is cheaper and has the same quality of service. Since VOIP uses a single network to transfer voice and data, the overall cost per call is cheaper to the service prodder than using two separate networks. When voice and data are transferred together on a single network, the service providers only need to build and maintain one network, thus hire less staff. These companies have also learned to manage both voice traffic and data applications correctly to reduce any sacrifice in quality. Although there is a monthly charge for the service, VOIP phones cost about the same as a regular business phone. With all of its benefits, VOIP should take the place of analog telephone service within a few years.

What does VOIP refer to?

A.An Internet forum.

B.A technology of telephone service.

C.Communication via e-mail.

D.An Internet conference.

听力原文:Music and literature, the two temporal arts, contrive their pattern of sound in t
ime; or, in other words, of sounds and pauses. Communication may be made in broken words, the business of life be carried on with substantive alone; but that is not what we call literature; and the true business of the literary artist is to plait or weave his meaning, involving it around itself; so that each sentence, by successive phrases, shall first come into a kind of knot, and then, after a moment of suspended meaning, solve and clear itself. In every properly constructed sentence there should be observed this knot or hitch; so that we are led to foresee, to expect, and to welcome the successive phrase. The pleasure may be heightened by an element of surprise, as, very grossly, in the common figure of the antithesis, or with much greater subtlety, where an antithesis is first suggested and then deftly evaded. Each phrase, besides, is to be comely in itself; and between the implication and the evolution of the sentence there should be a satisfying equipoise of sound; for nothing more often disappoints the ear than a sentence solemnly and sonorously prepared, and hastily and weakly finished.Nor should the balance be too striking and exact, for the one rule is to be infinitely various; to interest, to disappoint, to surprise, and yet still to gratify; to be ever changing, as it were, the stitch, and yet still to give the effect of an ingenious neatness.

Compared with literature, communication stresses ______.

A.the use of good-patterned sentence structures

B.meaning effect rather than the pattern of a sentence

C.the flow of sound which contributes to the meaning

D.the playing of words instead of that of tones

One of Britain's few distinctive contributions to world culture may come to an end, accord
ing to a survey that suggests holiday postcards are more and more given up because of emails and instant messages in mobile phones.

More than half of the 1000 holiday-makers interviewed said they had decided to send fewer cards, turning instead to their electronic rivals. A quarter of the respondents (受调查者) regard postcards as old-fashioned and slow to arrive. A further 14% admitted that thinking of something to fill the space was too challenging, compared with a call home.

Although officially invented by a Hungarian, Emanuel Herrmann, in 1869, the idea of illustrated cards was taken up with most enthusiasm in Victorian Britain, joining Gothic architecture and landscape gardening as fields for which the country was famous.

"If the British postcard did disappear, we would lose forever something of great importance to the nation, "said Chris Mottershead of Thomson Holidays, which did the survey. He was backed by Marie Angelou of Sussex University, who has investigated the importance of sending and receiving postcards. "Postcards are nothing like phone calls, instant messages and direct photo shots via the mobile, "she said. "All these are useful, practical devices, but postcards offer something else, something additional that is not simply functional, but imaginative and personal. They can create the real atmosphere of your holiday in a way that nothing else can do. They are also for more than a moment—with some people adding them to collections built up over years and years.

Who first got the idea of illustrated cards?

A.Emanuel Herrmann.

B.Victorian Britain.

C.Chris Mottershead.

D.Marie Angelou.

Live with Computer

After too long on the net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend's Liverpudlian (利物浦的) accent suddenly becomes indecipherable (难懂的)after the clarity of his words on screen; a secretary's tone seems more rejecting than I'd imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid- hours become minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.

For the latest three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit articles and edit them via E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England ; so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.

If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact, at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 1996 on TV.

But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I've merged with my machines, taking data in, spitting them back, just another node on the net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It's like attending an "AA" meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half sipped drink. We have become the net opponents' worst nightmare.

What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and faces, has become avoidance, a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber-interaction, coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.

At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I'd never done previously. The voices of the programs soothe me, but then I'm jarred by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or compulsively needing to keep up with the possible angle of every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background.

Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes______.

A.unidentifiable

B.unbearable

C.unreal

D.misleading

In some ways, Ralph Ellison's protagonist in Invisible Man emblematizes

what might be called the "presentist simplicity" of the novel's endorsement of

industrial, imperialist, xenophobic American myth-making. Layer upon layer of

Line allusion mark its chapters, which in combination with the novel's Homeric

(5) ambitiousness, serve finally to obscure rather than to prophesy the actual,

engaged, advanced-guard, public sphere effectiveness of American blacks

already at work modernizing the United States. Simply stated, Ellison believed

morality, equality, and responsibility were affirmative "notions", but blacks, at

the very moment of Invisible Man's glorious reception, were transforming

(10) "notions" into decisively affirmative actions, by courageously putting body and

soul on the line and constructing a sphere of American ethical publicity

undreamed by the novelist. Ellison thus remained silent on the possibilities of an

altogether "unexceptional" America-a post-industrial, radically black public

sphere conditioned America.

The author is primarily concerned with

A.criticizing Ellison on the basis of reactionary assumptions his work makes about politically-involved blacks

B.exposing the limitations of Ellison's novel when compared with the actual work performed by black workers and activists

C.chronicling the effects Ellison's novel had upon the black activist movements of the 1960's

D.comparing Ellison's view of post-industrial black America with that of the activists working at the time

E.critically describing Ellison's approach as novelist to the task of ethical publicity
