Looking to the Future—2040 Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go ou

Looking to the Future—2040

Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off—and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room, the lighting and the humidity. A sensor will detect the presence of a human (and, with luck, ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave it will turn them off again.

The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, plugs or switches, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the fire brigade. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. This will not be difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You will open them using your personal card—the one you use for shopping—maybe using a number known only to you.

It will be impossible to lose the key, and a housebreaker will have to tamper (拨弄) with the lock or with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer.

The computer will be more than a fireman—policeman—servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040 “entertainment” will mean much more. For one thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather than just watching

The author intends to tell us that

A.in 2040 we will live without the lights and heaters

B.In 2040 we will use much more lights and heaters

C.In 2040 there will be no switches of lights and heaters

D.In 2040 lights and heaters will he on and off automatically

根据下面内容,回答题:

A few minutes ago, walking back from lunch, I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping. It wasn"t much but, as I turned, my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too. A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime.

The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter. It can be nothing more than a penny.Whatever the coin is, no one ignores the sound of it.It got me thinking about sounds again.

We are besieged(包围) by so many sounds that attract the most attention. People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine, a police car or an ambulance comes screaming along the street.

When I"m in New York, I"m a New Yorker. I don"t turn either. Like the natives.

At home in my little town in Connecticut, it"s different. The distant wail of a police car, an emergency vehicle or a fire siren brings me to my feet if I"m seated and brings me to the window if I"m in bed.

It"s the quietest sounds that have most effect on us, not the loudest. In the middle of the night, I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away through three closed doors.I"ve been hearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imagination turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house. How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?

The sound of a coin dropping makes people________. 查看材料

A.think of money

B.look at each other

C.pay attention to it

D.stop crossing the street

听力原文: Beethoven was born in 1770. He studied first with his father. At 12 he had some
music published. In 1792 he settled in Vienna. Around 1795 his first important publications appeared. As a pianist, it was reported, he had fire, brilliance and fantasy as well as depth of feeling. These years also saw the composition of his first three piano concertos, his first two symphonies and a set of six string quartets.

1802, however, was a year of crisis for Beethoven, with his realization that the impaired hearing he had noticed for some time was incurable and sure to worsen. But he came through with his determination strengthened and entered a new creative phase, generally called his middle period. It is characterized by a heroic tone, evident in the Eroica Symphony, in Symphony No.5, and in his opera Fidelio. (18[A]) With his powerful middle-period works Beethoven was firmly established as the greatest composer of his time.

The years after 1812 were relatively unproductive. (19[D]) He was seriously depressed, by his deafness and the resulting isolation and by the failure of his romantic relationships. But he came out of these trials to write hi s profoundest music, which surely reflects something of what he had been through. (20[C]) For Beethoven, the act of composition had always been a struggle; in the late works the sense of agonizing effort is a part of the music.

Beethoven established himself as the greatest composer ______.

A.with his powerful middle-period works

B.when his first three piano concertos were finished

C.around 1802

D.around 1795
