Today a pilot is totally dependent on what the air traffic controller on the ground tells

him. He can't see enough to be safe. Flight watch is an instrument intended to help him.

The ultralight plane was born of the marriage of the hang glider and the go-kart(微型单座赛车) engine around 1974, when John Moody mounted a 12-horsepower go-kart engine on his Icarus Ⅱ hang glider.

Today’s ultralights are not just hang gliders with engines; they are" air recreation vehicles". Modem ultralight planes use snowmobile(雪地机动车)engines that let them cruise at about 50 miles per hour, climb at about 500 feet per minute, and carry combined payloads of pilot and fuel up to about 200 pounds, which is about equal to an ultralight plane’s weight when empty. More than ten thousand ultralight planes were sold last year at prices ranging from $ 2,800 to $ 7,000. But the main reason for the increasing popularity of these aircraft is not that they are inexpensive, but that they are fun to fly.

The modern ultralight plane would look very familiar to the earliest pioneers of aviation. Otto Lilienthal made more than 2000 flights in Germany in the 1890’s in what were actually hang gliders. Octave Chanute designed and built many early hang gliders. Augustus Herring, Chanute’s assistam, used these gliders as models for a glider that he built for him self. On this glider, Herring installed a compressed-air motor and flew 267 feet in 1898. The Wright brothers' Flyer was the grandfather of today’s ultralight plane. The pilot sat right out in the open, just as in modem ultralights, and used con trois that were much the same as those used in today's machines.

Though most ultralight planes are used for pleasure flying, some are also used for crop dusting, aerial photography, and even military observation service. The likelihood is that further uses will be found for ultralight planes, but their greatest use will continue to be as air recreational vehicles.

Inertial guidance is the name given to those types of systems which guide and keep track o
f the location of vehicles which are free to move in three dimensions. Vehicles which move only on a plane surface, such as ships or automobiles, require only an accurate compass, sextant, and clock to keep track of their present position. When a vehicle can travel up or down as well as north or east, it is much more difficult to fix its position. An inertial platform. is used in inertial guidance to measure vehicle altitude and acceleration which are then integrated to provide position and velocity. The inertial platform. consists of three gyroscopes and three accelerometers mounted in the inner gimbal of the four gimbal platform. The purpose of the inertial platform. is to allow the vehicle to move in any direction about the inner gimbal containing the gyros and accelerometers, without disturbing or turning them from their original orientation. Thus the gyros and accelerometers do not mm when the vehicle turns so they sense altitude and acceleration with respect to their original inertial reference frame. If the acceleration is always known with respect to this original inertial reference frame, it can be integrated to provide velocity and then integrated again to provide distance. Thus the distance and velocity of the vehicle with respect to its starting point are known.

Inertial guidance systems are used today in airplanes, submarines, and spacecraft. They display for the pilot his pitch, roll and yaw angles, his heading, his speed, and his latitude and longitude. These are very important items to have readily available, whether one is in a high speed vehicle with very low visibility due to poor weather, or in a spacecraft traveling in lunar orbit. The main features of inertial systems are that they are automatic and do not require any external information. Thus, the pilot does not have to feed in any information except the original position and altitude. Inertial systems serve a need on fast moving vehicles moving in a three dimensional plane, where position information is required by the pilot almost constantly.

each claims to be the world's busiest airport. O'Hare may be the world's busiest airport. Or it may be only the second busiest. But everything about it is big.

The Federal Aviation Administration says more than nine hundred thirty thousand flights traveled through O'Hare last year. During that time, more than sixty-nine million passengers passed through O'Hare.

Most of these people were waiting for connecting flights. As they waited, they could shop at many airport stores. They could eat at airport cafes. They could exercise at a health club or do office work in a business-support center. They could take their children to a flight museum or visit the airport's religious center.

The huge O'Hare Airport of today is very different from its beginning. It started as a military air base and factory in the nineteen forties. The center produced planes for World War Ⅱ. Later, the airport was named for Navy pilot Edward O'Hare. He was killed in an action during the war after being honored with medals for bravery.

Big as O'Hare airport is today, however, it is not big enough. Too many airplanes crowd the runways where they take off and land. Delays and cancellations interfere with air traffic across the country. Officials say sixty-five percent of the flights at O'Hare were delayed during the first seven months of this year. This was the worst record among the nation's major airports.

To improve the situation, the governor of Illinois signed the O'Hare Modernization Act last year. The Act calls for building another runway. Existing runways would be moved and extended.
