听力原文:W: Bird watching! Now what is it people love about this so much?

M: I think it's the challenge, it keeps your brain going, you feel like a little kid on a treasure hunt. You're poking around the trees, and looking for little hidden birds.

W: The three central characters in your book, the top finishers in the 1998 Big Year competition, were clearly looking for a challenge. Tell us how the Big Year works.

M: Well, the Big Year is a contest with no referees and few rules. The idea is, who can see the most species of birds in North America in one year. So you can see them however you want. You can fly to see them, ride a bike to see them. In one case, they even took a helicopter to see them in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada.

W: And they chase the birds through the canyon, as I recall.

M: They did, up and over peaks, and one guy had a horrible seasickness problem.

W: It is said he just hoped he could hold his breakfast together.

M: And he did, and he got the bird. What a great bonus.

What do the man and the woman talk about?

A.A book on birds.

B.Species of birds.

C.A man chasing birds.

D.Activities of watching birds.

听力原文:M: Ow!That hurts!

W: What happened? Did you cut yourself?.

M: Yes—on the edge of this paper. How can such a little cut hurt so much? I' m not even bleeding, but my finger really hurts.

W: You know, I read something about that. It turns out that a little cut on a finger can hurt a lot more than a big cut somewhere else.

M: Why? That doesn't make any sense.

W: Actually, it does. There are more nerve endings in your hands than almost anywhere else in the body, and it' s the nerve endings that allow you to feel pain.

M: I guess that' s true.

W: Also, a little cut like yours won' t damage the nerve endings, just irritate them. If they were damaged, you' d feel less pain, but the wound could be more serious.

M: So I suppose I should be happy my finger hurts so much?

W: Right. Now go get yourself bandage.

M: Why? You just told me it' s not serious.

W: It' s not, but it does seem to be bothering you. Putting a bandage over the cut will keep the skin from drying and will help keep the skin together. If the skin stays together, the nerve endings won' t be exposed, and the cut will hurt less.

(24)

A.How much the cut hurt.

B.How deep the cut was.

C.How easily he was cut.

D.How concerned the woman was.

听力原文:Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally.

听力原文: Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally. His works were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the US.

The respect with which he was held was partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his gracious manners, his pleasant spirits, his artistic integrity, his love of both the Old World and the New. Thackeray described Irving as "a gentleman, who, though himself born in a very high sphere, was most finished, polished, witty, socially the equal of the most refined Europeans." In England he was granted an honorary degree from Oxford—an unusual honor for a citizen of a young, uncultured nation— and he received the medal of the Royal Society of literature; America made him ambassador to Spain.

Irving's background provides little to explain his literary achievements. A gifted but delicate child, he had little formal schooling. He Studied law, but without zeal, and never did practice seriously. He was immune to his strict Presbyterian home environment, frequenting both social gatherings and the theatre.

听力原文:M: Why do you think that way?

W: While I admit there is very little discrimination here on campus towards orientation, appearance and nationality, women are not treated equally. Women are not represented in many faculties. They also hold fewer senior faculty positions, are not represented well in administration and, do you know, not once has them been a female president of the student union.

M: You are running for president of the student union on the issue of equality, but you are not going to be a winner, I suppose. Most students feel women have equality nowadays.

W: Not the students I have talked to, particularly the women. My brother is a lawyer and he says the women in his firm have to work much harder than the men if they want to become a partner in the firm.

M: So you are going to champion women's rights for the election.

W: Yes, my campaign will focus on that but I will not ignore other issues such as transportation, cafeterias and so on. I have been a student here lot 4 years and am aware of all the issues. If I can make this campus a better place for all students, then as a woman, I would be setting an excellent role model. And, I am sure I can do a better job than Jerry did this year.

M: What did Jerry accomplish this year?

W: Next to nothing. He put pressure on the cafeterias to be a little more environmentally friendly but that is all about it.

(20)

A.To prove women's diligence.

B.To seek gender equality on campus.

C.To improve transportation and accommodation.

D.To put pressure on male students.
