Exporting American Culture: Disneyland in Japan and France

Since its opening in 1955, Disneyland has been viewed as an important part of American popular culture. One critic notes, "America's two enduring gifts to modern civilized life are its music, based on black culture, and Walt Disney" (Pilger 10). Building on the tradition of worlds' fairs, Disney is credited with "developing the prototype of a technologically advanced, immensely entertaining, and commercially feasible amusement park in contemporary society" (Weinstein 147). According to one scholar, Disneyland's success is due to its ability to reflect and reinforce "America's most important beliefs, values, ideals, and symbols" (Weinstein 151).

听力原文:Shanghai plans to build a vast underground network of malls, restaurants and park

听力原文: Shanghai plans to build a vast underground network of malls, restaurants and parking lots to make up for a lack of space above the ground, according to a recent government report. The development will cover 600,000 square meters, the equivalent of 120 soccer fields, spread across four underground floors, the city government reported on its website. The city is accepting bids from builders. Shanghai has about 20 million people, plus factories, office towers, and high-rise apartments, crowded into a small triangular territory near the mouth of Yangtze River. The plans call for the project, due to be finished by 2006, to expand existing facilities scattered along shanghai subway system. The project will need advanced technology to supply fresh air and ensure safety. But the biggest concern is the stability of the soil under the city. Shanghai is sinking by 1.5 centimeters a year land-subsiding has been aggravated by over-pumping of underground water and the construction of thousands of high-rise buildings. "Shanghai" foundations are built on soft soil, so building multi-storied spaces underground would be like digging holes in a piece of bean curd, "the government report said. "The difficulties are easy to see."

The news is mainly about the city government's plan to ______.

A.expand and improve the existing subway system.

B.build underground malls and parking lots.

C.prevent further land subsidence.

D.promote advanced technology.

Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really l
ike modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world.Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in any original ways.It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a pamting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings.Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced.

The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past.He is too proud to do that.

W: Yes, can I help you?

M: Yes, uh...I want to take an English course in September and I need some information.

W: Sure. Courses start on September 6th and finish right before Christmas on December 22nd. Um...the advanced classes meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 6 to 8 in the evening, registration is one week before classes begin, so that's August 30th.

M: So there are no classes on Tuesday and Thursday?

W: No, not for advanced students. Only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

M: And how much is the tuition for one course from September 6th to December 22nd?

W: It's 350 dollars. And if you want to continue in January, that will be another 350.

M: 350 dollars. Hmm. Could you tell me what's in the advanced courses? W: Let me see. There's advanced grammar, American literature and conversation.

M: Is there any work on pronunciation?

W: No, not at this level.

M: How about writing? Is there anything on composition?

W: Yes, they do some writing, but most of the work is on grammar, literature and conversation.

M: I see. And just a few more questions. Do you have a language lab where! can work on my pronunciation? And what about videos and computers?

W: Well, we don't have a language lab. The building is too small. But we do have video and we also have tape recorders in every room.

M: And computers?

W: No, none at present.

Traffic statistics paint a gloomy picture. To help solve their traffic woes, some rapidly
growing U.S. cities have simply built more roads. But traffic experts say building more roads is a quick-fix solution that will not alleviated the traffic problem in the long run. Soaring land costs, increasing concern over social and environmental disruptions caused by road building, and the likelihood that more roads can only lead to more cars and traffic are powerful factors bearing down on a 1950s-style. construction program.

The goal of smart-highway technology is to make traffic systems work at optimum efficiency by treating the road and the vehicles traveling on them as an integral transportation system. Proponents of the advanced technology say electronic detection systems, closed-circuit television, radio-communication, ramp metering variable message signing, and other smart-highway technology can now be used at a reasonable cost to improve communication between drivers and the people who monitor traffic.

Pathfinder, a Santa Monica, California-based smart-highway project in which a 14-mile stretch of the Santa Monica Freeway, making up what is called a "smart corridor," is being instrumented with buried loops in the pavement. Closed-circuit television cameras survey the flow of traffic; while communication linked to property equipped automobiles advise motorists of the least congested routes or detours.

Not all traffic experts, however, look to smart-highway technology as the ultimate solution to traffic gridlock. Some say the high-tech approach is limited and can only offer temporary solutions to a serious problem.

"Electronics on the highway addresses just one aspect of the problems: how to regulate traffic more efficiently," explains Michael Renner, senior researcher at the World-Watch Institute. "It does not deal with the central problem of too many cars for roads that cannot be built fast enough. It sends people the wrong message. They start thinking yes, there used to be a traffic congestion problem, but that's been solved now because we have advanced high-tech system in place. "Larson agrees and adds, "Smart highway is just one of the tools that we use to deal with our traffic problems. It is not the solution itself, just pan of package. There are different strategies. "

Other traffic problem-solving options being studied and experimented with include car-pooling, rapid mass-transit systems, staggered or flexible work hours, and road pricing, a system whereby motorists pay a certain amount for the time they use a highway.

It seems that we need a new, major thrust to deal with the traffic problems of the next 20 years. There has to be a big change and a long way to go.

The compound word "quick-fix" (Line 2, Para. 1) is closest in meaning to

A.an optional solution.

B.an expedient solution.

C.a ready solution.

D.an efficient solution.

The rebuilding of the World Trade Center is in many ways a memorial to those who lost their lives in the 2001 September 11 attacks and it is a tribute that these buildings will also be built to the highest green building standards. N.Y. Governor George Pataki announced that the Freedom Tower, World Trade Center Office Towers 2, 3, and 4, as well as the World Trade Center Memorial and Memorial Museum will all be designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED Gold certification requirements.

This groundbreaking announcement was made five years after the devastating attacks and includes an entire package of energy and environmental measures that will be incorporated into the design of the World Trade Center redevelopment. Plans for the Freedom Tower and other facilities at the World Trade Center site will feature state-of-the-art energy technologies to better protect environmental resources; utilize renewable energy sources, and maximize energy efficiency.

These buildings join over half a billion square feet of construction projects already involved with the LEED program, including World Trade Center 7, which was certified as LEED Gold in March 2006. These facilities will also be built to a design standard that is 20 percent more efficient than the New York Energy Conservation Construction Code.

"The decision to achieve LEED Gold is a fitting tribute to the importance of the reconstruction of Ground Zero. Using LEED sends a clear message that our buildings must be safe, healthy places for us to live and work," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "New York is to be commended for its leadership; the World Trade Center buildings will stand as a symbol of New York's Courage and commitment to a healthy and sustainable future."

Governor Pataki also announced an agreement with Silverstein Properties that calls for the Freedom Tower and each of the World Trade Center Office Towers to utilize cutting edge fuel cell technology to increase efficiency and provide secure clean on-site power generation. These fuel cell installations, totaling 4.8 MW of power generation, will together constitute one of the largest fuel cell installations in the world.

"The redevelopment will be a global example of green building design and a constant reminder of our commitment to break the cycle of dependence on foreign energy," said the Governor. "By moving forward with state-of-the-art design and guidelines, New York will once again show the world our ingenuity, innovation and commitment to building a stronger, brighter future for all."

"LEED certification for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex demonstrates the resiliency (恢复) of the United States," Fedrizzi continued. "Not only is our nation restoring the areas devastated by the terrorist attacks, but we are also doing so in a way that highlights our commitment m—and belief in—the future."

LEED Gold certification requires ______.

A.the highest standard of green building design

B.the application of advanced energy technology

C.efficiency of using energy

D.safe clean on-site generation of power

听力原文: Manhattan Island is surrounded on the east by the East and Harlem Rivers and on
the west by the North and Hudson Rivers. It links with the other four towns which make up New York City and with New Jersey by means of subways, underground tunnels and bridges which lead into Manhanttan from the surrounding area.

The Brooklyn Bridge was the first suspension bridge to link Brooklyn to Manhanttan. It is also the second oldest bridge in New York. The architect was John Augustus Roebling, who was the chief engineer of the suspended Railroad Bridge at Niagara Falls.

Mis, fortune accompanied the building of the bridge, which took place from 1869 to 1883. The architect died as a result of an accident early during the construction. His son, Washington Roebling, carried on his father's work, using the most advanced engineering techniques of the day. He also fell ill during the construction of the bridge and was obliged to direct the work on it from an apartment window overlooking the site.

Since its construction the Brooklyn Bridge has remained a busy and important passage in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge is 6775 feet long and 1595 feet wide. The suspended part is 3450 feet long and 85 feet wide. It has a clearance of 133 feet above water level. Four huge cables extend across the bridge, supported by two towers, each 272 feet high. Each of these cables is made up of 5700 wires.
