阅读材料,回答题。

In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the early postwar era(战后时期), there was a quite widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are facing with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over trusting (过分信任) of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons maybe pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction(失灵).

Obviously, there would be no point in investing(投入) in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

What is the main purpose of this passage? 查看材料

A.To look back to the early days of computers

B.To explain what technical problems may occur with computers

C.To discourage unnecessary investment in computers

D.To warn against the blindness to the probable shortcomings of computers

Prefer

(i) Prefer is normally followed by to, not than: "1 prefer coffee to tea", "She preferred sewing to knitting", "We prefer going by car to traveling by train". The difficulty arises when infinitives are involved. We cannot say "She preferred to sew to to knit." In such cases we use rather than, but never than alone.

Occasionally (more often in literary than in spoken style. ) rather is brought forward and placed before the first infinitive, and than is left before the second: "He preferred rather to take the whole blame himself than to allow it to fall on the innocent".

(ii) Even with nouns rather than is permissible in a situation where a choice specifically for that occasion is involved. Thus "I prefer port to sherry" expresses a general preference.

But if the question is "What shall we have to drink? Port?... Sherry.*", the reply might be, "I should prefer port rather than sherry". Perhaps there is a vague feeling that the infinitive to have is understood before each of the alternatives. But "I should prefer port to sherry" is also correct.

(iii) "Which do you prefer most?" is incorrect. Literally, prefer means "place before the other(s) ". It is therefore an absolute term, and cannot be modified by more or most.

According to the entry, which of the following sentences is/are correct? (1) People here prefer to tide their own bicycles than riding the town buses. (2) People here prefer riding their own bicycles than riding the town buses. (3) People here prefer tidi

A.They are all correct.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

In the early days of the United States, postal charges were paid by the recipient and Charges varied with the distance carried. In 1825, the United States Congress permitted local postmasters to give letters to mail carriers for home delivery, but these carriers received no government salary and their entire compensation depended on what they were paid by the recipients of individual letters.

In 1847 the United States Post Office Department adopted the idea of a postage stamp, which of course simplified the payment for postal service but caused grumbling by those who did not like to pre pay. Besides, the stamp covered only delivery to the post office and did not include carrying it to a private address. In Philadelphia, for example, with a population of 150,000, people still had to go to the post office go get their mail. The confusion and congestion of individual citizens looking for their letters was itself enough to discourage use of the mail. It is no wonder that, during the years of these cumber some arrangements, private letter-carrying and express businesses developed, although their activities were only semilegal, they thrived, and actually advertised that between Boston and Philadelphia they were a half-day speedier than the government mail. The government postal service lost volume to private competition and was not able to handle efficiently even the business it had.

Finally, in 1863, Congress provided that the mail carriers who delivered the mail from the post offices to private addresses should receive a government salary, and that there should be no extra charge for that delivery. But this delivery service was at first confined to cities, and free home delivery became a mark of urbanism. As late as 1887, a town had to have 10,000 people to be eligible for free home de livery. In 1890, of the 75 million people in the United States, fewer than 20 million had mail delivered free to their doors. The rest, nearly three-quarters of the population, still received no mail unless they went to their post office.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.The increased use of private mail services.

B.The development of a government postal system.

C.A comparison of urban and rural postal services.

D.The history of postage stamps.

听力原文:M: In the studio today we have Eve Startling, a career adviser at a well known co
mprehensive school. Glad to have you with us, Eve.

W: Thank you.

M: A lot of young people are very nervous when they go to a job interview for the first time. What's the best way of dealing with this?

W: The obvious answer isn't much help, really, I'm afraid: "Just keep calm and do your best." If you're nervous to start with, this advice probably has the opposite effect. And in fact, a certain amount of tension is probably a good thing. It's the same with the way you sit when the inter viewer asks you to sit down.

M: How do you mean?

W: Well, if you balance on the edge of you chair, it shows you're nervous, but if you relax and make yourself too comfortable, that won't do, either. You should sit naturally, but straight, to show you're paying attention.

M: And I suppose you should face the interviewer when you answer questions.

W: Yes, eye contact is important then, but that doesn't mean you never take your eyes off the interviewer. And it's all right to be naturally pleasant, but don't try too hard.

M: One of the things that upset people most at interviews, I think, is that interviewers often ask trick questions. Even quite innocent questions like "How do you spend your spare time?" can contain traps in certain cases. Suppose the company would prefer an outdoor person but you spend every weekend looking at your stamp collection. What should you doe Should you always tell the truth or pretend to be what the company wants?

W: Tell the truth, yes, but not necessarily the whole truth. It's no good pre tending to be what you're not an experienced interviewer would soon find out but you needn't go out of your way to tell them anything you don't want them to know.

M: One last piece of advice before we sign off?

W: Yes, and it may surprise you. That is that very often young people get carried away just with the idea of winning. It's hard to remember when there's a lot of unemployment, as there is nowadays, but you should be sure that this is the kind of work you want to do and the firm is one that you would enjoy working for. Otherwise you may get the job and then find out that you hate it. So remember to ask sensibly questions as well as to answer sensibly.

JOB INTERVIEWS

People looking for jobs usually send in a copy of their resume. This should be used as a basis for questions from the interviewer.

Interviewers find it helpful to ask candidates about the way they behaved in difficult situations in the past, for example with an angry customer. These questions allow applicants to explain how they acted in a real-life situation and, consequently, give clues as to how they would act again in similar sit nations. Candidates are likely to tell the truth as speaking from memory leaves little time to invent what happened On the other hand questions which ask candidates to imagine how they would behave in a situation which they have probably never met are of little or no value. This is because they only provide answers about how candidates would hope to behave, and this might not match the actions they would actually take.

In any interview candidates must be treated fairly, with questions asked in the same means and with no candidate's interview lasting considerably longer than any other's. Candidates should always be given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the interview.

Jan Godley, head of HR at Aspley Supermarkets says: A company needs staff not only who have the fight qualifications and experience, but also who are happy to fit in with the company's way of doing things. Our managers have to accept the idea that everyone working here is a colleague (managers are always known by their first names), and that spending time actually in the store with colleagues and customers, rather than in their offices, is part of the job. For management posts, we organize pre interview group exercises to measure team-working and leadership skills, sometimes along with activities to assess personal qualifies.'

In all our interviews we take into account body language. It is natural for candidates to show signs of being nervous at an interview but most relax after a few minutes and become more confident. How ever, if the nervousness continues until the end of the interview, especially when difficult questions are asked, we would begin to have doubts about that candidate. Like all employers, we want to take on staff who are at ease with colleagues and customers so it is vital to watch the way candidates behave, as well as listen to what they have to say.'

Why is asking candidates to imagine their reactions to a situation unhelpful?

A.Candidates may have no experience of this situation.

B.Candidates may act differently in the real-life situation.

C.Candidates may never meet such a situation.
