听力原文: [29] A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent thing to say to good people.

Something has gone wrong with our once-proud American way of life. A key ingredient is disappearing: responsibility, which means that every person is responsible for his actions. Without it, there can be no respect, no law, and ultimately, no society. My job as a police officer is to impose responsibility on people who refuse to impose it on themselves. [30] But as every policeman knows, controls on people's behavior. are far less effective than internal restrictions such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. Yet gradually, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restrictions are loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your properly his property; he takes what he wants, including your life.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by the school that didn't teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home. I don't believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal from responsibility, we become a society of endless excuses. [31] We desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

(30)

A.Because good men are not as smart as the police.

B.Because good people have no sense of guilt.

C.Because good people have hardly done anything to prevent crimes.

D.Because good people commit more criminal activities recently.

Would-be language teachers everywhere have one thing in common: they all want some recogni
tion of their professional status and skills, and a job. The former requirement is obviously important on a personal level, but it is vital if you are to have any chance of finding work.

Ten years ago, the situation was very different. In virtually, every developing country, and in many developed countries as well, being a native English speaker was enough to get you employed as an English teacher.

Now employers will only look at teachers who have the knowledge, the skills and attitudes to teach English effectively. The result of this has been to raise non-native English teachers to the same status as their native counterparts--something they have always deserved but seldom enjoyed. Non- natives are now happy-linguistic discrimination is a thing of the past.

An ongoing research project, funded by the University of Cambridge, asked a sample of teachers, teacher educators and employers in more than 40 countries whether they regard the native/non- native speakers distinction as being at all important. "NO" was the answer. As long as candidates could teach and had the required level of English, it didn't matter who they were and where they came from. Thus a new form. of discrimination this time justified because it singled out the unqualified-liberated the linguistically oppressed. But the Cambridge project did more than just that, it con- firmed that the needs of native and non-native teachers are extremely similar.

The selection of English teachers used to be mainly based on ______.

听力原文:M: Every year, as the seasons change, many birds, fish, insects and land animals
start to move. Some travel thousands of kilometers. For many it is for the first time. All of them have one thing in common: they know where they are going and they make no mistakes.

This is migration. There are many things which help animals to migrate. Birds and other animals have a body clock which tells them about changes in temperature and periods of light. Birds and some insects use their eyes to measure and compare the position of the sun from different place.

Many people now believe magnetism is very important. The earth itself is a magnet and every kind of life is affected in some way by its magnetic, fields.

But there are still many questions without answers, for example, the migration of eels. European eels travel down their rivers and into the Atlantic Ocean. They then swim 5600 kilometers to the Sargasso Sea, where they lay their eggs. The eels then die. The baby eels are carried by the Gulf Stream to Europe, a journey which takes two and a half years. They swim back up the rivers. There they live for about ten years before the return journey to the Atlantic. How do they do this? We know what happens to the eels but not how or why.

"Migration" in this passage means

A.the seasonal moving of creatures.

B.settling down in a new place.

C.the activity controlled by magnetism.

D.knowing where one is going and making no mistakes.

Snowboarding

Victoria Jamieson from Britain started snowboarding at 20. She is now 23 and has won many competitions in this sport. We spoke to her when she was at a snowboarding competition last week in Switzerland and asked her why she started the sport.

'I've always liked all kinds of sports, especially skiing, and it seemed natural to start snowboardlng. It doesn't take long to learn and you can become really good in a few months.'

We asked her if she had to do a lot of practice. 'Well, in winter I snowboard in the mountains every day from 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m. I also run and go hiking. But I just love doing it all! I like the competitions and being in the mountains. It's so beautiful. But free-riding, that's doing what you want when you're not in a competition, is the best thing in the world for me.'

We asked her what is important when you're learning. 'You can learn quickly but you need lessons. It's also important to have the right clothes so you don't get wet because, to begin with, you spend a lot of time falling down!'

Victoria was visiting Switzerland for a competition.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say

My name is Mohsen. I am from Cario, but three weeks ago I said goodbye to my family and go
t on a plane to the U.S. Now 1 am studying at Cornell University in New York, and I live in the school.

School life is busy, but it is a lot of fun. I meet new people every day. It is a funny thing that everyone asks me the same question: How do you like here7

Well, it's not that I don't like coming to the U.S.; it's just that a lot of things seem strange to me. For example, the language sounds different from the English I learned at home. And everybody talks so fast. Sometimes I become nervous (紧张的) and I don't understand everything that people say to me. Worse, people never seem to understand me. I always have to say something two or three times. Now I work on my pronunciation (发音) to get people to understand me better and I believe that it has begun to get better. But, to tell you the truth, at times, I get very embarrassed(尴尬).

What is this text about?

A.Mohsen's holiday in the U.S.

B.Mohsen's study in the U.S.

C.Mohsen's job in the U.S.

To help others, you dont have to be an efficient expert in the art; the main thing is the
intention. You may be crude and clumsy, wasteful and ineffective, but if you sincerely try to help, your attempt produces nothing but good. The one you are trying to help knows your intention and is strengthened and encouraged by the magic of your sharing. In nearly every case, your simple desire to help, converted into action, produces the good sought. But perhaps the greatest good is the good that you yourself get out of the attempt. Service to others delivers more joy to you than the joy you deliver to them. In doing good, you free yourself from the terrible burden of self; you escape from yourself into a clean world of joy and light. The good you simply try to do, regardless of the outcome, is always a success inside yourself. Unselfish giving is your most efficient formula for happiness, for you have embraced Eternity instead of Self; you have felt life, and you are now the world bigger than you were before you began the project.

…What day? That matters little; it is the same eve...

…What day? That matters little; it is the same every day. Let us then take at random September 25th of this present year 2889. This morning Mr. Fritz Napoleon Smith awoke in very bad humor. His wife having left for France eight days ago, he was feeling disconsolate. Incredible though it seems, in all the ten years since their marriage, this is the first time that Mrs. Edith Smith, the professional beauty, has been so long absent from home; two or three days usually suffice for her frequent trips to Europe. The first thing that Mr. Smith does is to connect his phonotelephote, the wires of which communicate with his Paris mansion. The telephote! Here is another of the great triumphs of science in our time. The transmission of speech is an old story; the transmission of images by means of sensitive mirrors connected by wires is a thing but of yesterday. A valuable invention indeed, and Mr. Smith this morning was not niggard of blessings for the inventor, when by its aid he was able distinctly to see his wife notwithstanding the distance that separated him from her. Mrs. Smith, weary after the ball or the visit to the theater the preceding night, is still abed, though it is near noontide at Paris. She is asleep, her head sunk in the lace-covered pillows. What? She stirs? Her lips move. She is dreaming perhaps? Yes, dreaming. She is talking, pronouncing a name his name—Fritz! The delightful vision gave a happier turn to Mr. Smith's thoughts. And now, at the call of imperative duty, light-hearted he springs from his bed and enters his mechanical dresser. Two minutes later the machine deposited him all dressed at the threshold of his office. The round of journalistic work was now begun…

A、adventure

B、folklore

C、science fiction

D、realistic narrative
