听力原文: Last semester almost half the students in my class failed. Before you get scared and conclude that I don't like my students, let explain how that came about. This class is a composition class. In composition there are certain rules of formality that must be followed in order to clearly communicate. It is unfortunate that these days many students feel that formal rules are not necessary. When 1 grade a paper and I see that you have misspelled a word, you have lost 10 points. If you have used inadequate punctuation, that can cost you up to 15 points. Additionally, any paper that you can not finish on time will not be accepted. Any theme that is not submitted on time will not be graded. You will have to read all the assignments. I will give quizzes on the reading assignments in order to make sure that you are keeping up on your readings. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursdays. Your final grade is based on the total scores of the four tests, several quizzes and six theme papers. Any time you have a problem I would seriously recommend that you come to see in my office. My office is located on the fourth floor of the building directly in front of the building we are in now. The hour is 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the same days as class. For Thursday you write an essay about your readings from the short story on Page 74 of the textbook. If there are no questions, that will be all for today.

听力原文:Woman: I want to watch TV and improve my English. What is your favorite TV show?
Man: I like sitcoms. (8[A]) I watch "Friends" a lot. I never missed a single episode. Of course there are other sitcoms like "Wings," "Frazier,' "Family Ties". Those axe all very good.
Woman: What time do they come on?
Man: Mostly in the evenings. These are actually old shows, but NBC has re-runs of them. "Frazier" is on from 6:00 to 6:30 on NBC every day week days. "Friends" is from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, also on NBC. Channels like Nick-at-Nite show older sitcoms almost every night except Sundays.
Woman: What are the older sitcoms?
Man: "Cheers" is a good one. "All in the Family," "Three's Company," and "Family Ties" are all great ones. (9[C]) But they are usually shown very late at night, beginning from 10:00 PM until 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning.
Woman: Which ones are the movie channels?
Man: (10[B]) Channel 45 is Super-Station. That channel has a lot of good movies. TNT is channel 17. You can also find many movies on TNT. What's bothering me is the commercials. A two-hour movie can run three and half-hours because of the commercials. That's really annoying.
What sitcom does the man like best?
A.Friends.
B.Family Ties.
C.Cheers.
D.All in the Family.

Interviewee: Yes, what's it for? Is it a marketing survey?
Interviewer: No, no, no. It's a survey about study habits. When do you get up every day?
Interviewee: Half past six on weekdays, but on weekends, I always get up late.
Interviewer: How late?
Interviewee: About 11:00 or 12:00. I think I must reward myself for working hard all week.
Interviewer: Of course, you've earned it. Do you work best in the mornings or in the afternoons?
Interviewee: Well, I guess ... in the mornings. I seldom study in the afternoon. You see, my mind is awful then, so I have to take a nap,...a long nap for 2—3 hours ... or ... can't concentrate ...
Interviewer: I see. Do you often stay up late?
Interviewee: Oh, yes, almost everyday. I usually don't go to bed until 12 o'clock.
Interviewer: That's funny. Almost everyone in your school says that. Thank you very much.

Most banks in the US open at 9:00 or 10:00 and close between 3:00 and 5:00, but stay open later on Fridays, and some banks have longer hours in order to attract customers on this day.
What's the best way to carry money safely while you are traveling? There are three possibilities-personal checks from your country, travelers checks and credit cards. Some Ame-rican banks accept foreign checks such as Eurocheques (欧洲货币支票);the problem is that only those banks that are used to dealing with foreigners will know what Eurocheques are.
It may be more convenient to carry travelers checks, which are insured against loss. They should be in dollars, because only a few banks do much business in foreign currencies. If your checks aren't in dollars, it may take you a long time to find a bank that will exchange them. You can use travelers checks almost anywhere. If you run out of them, you can buy more at most banks. Their service charge will vary, though, so ask what it is before you buy your checks.
Americans would say the best way to carry money is to have a credit card. Credit cards can be canceled if they are lost or stolen. And because they are widely accepted in the US, it is easy to use them to pay all kinds of bills.
Of course, you can't get along without cash, but you don't need to carry much with you.
In order to attract customers, on Fridays some American banks______.
A.close the banks at 3.-00 p.m.
B.close the banks at 5.00 p. m.
C.open the banks earlier than usual
D.close the banks later than usual
听力原文: The train I was traveling on was already half an hour late. I had planned to arrive in Chicago at 7:00 in time to catch the 7:50 train to St. Louis, but there was no hope of that now. I explained the situation to the conductor who advised me to get off before Union Station and take a taxi. When the time came, he even helped me with my language. He wished mea good luck as I jumped off, and a few minutes later I was going towards the Union Station in a taxi. It was almost 7:50 when we stopped outside the station, I paid the driver quickly, carried my bags and hurried inside.
"The St. Louis train....'?" was all I had time to say to the first porter I saw. You can imagine my disappointment when he pointed to a train that was just moving out of the station.
When did the train he was travelling on arrive in Chicago?
A.At 7:00.
B.At 7:50.
C.In time.
D.Behind its time.

With twins, I did not have a spare hand to write with.
Before my twins were born, my days were long but I had nothing to write about. After the twins' birth I did have something to write about, but I found myself facing not a pen or paper but milk bottles.
During some nights, friends would visit. They would leave at 11 pm, heading for bed, and for us the night was only just beginning. With twins, there was really no night. Each feeding lasted a long time. At 1:00 am, each of them would begin crying with hunger. At 4:00 am, when I finally put them down, I headed for the kitchen and lighted a cigarette. I hadn't smoked for almost a year, but I felt I'd never needed it more. I was so sleepy and so tired that I didn't care.
Two years have passed since then and we've managed to live through it all. My days are still very full and even now there isn't one evening when I put the twins down for the night that I don't breathe a sigh of relief. At last a little time for myself.
