第二篇

Speech therapists divide their cases into common and complex. An example of a complex case is a person suffering from aphasia. This is the loss of the ability to under- stand and/or use speech. There are many causes of aphasia, including partial brain dam- age that leaves the individual with the physical ability to speak. If the individual is able to speak but does not, the therapist must determine the cause of such conduct. Often, speech therapists determine that problems are emotional and refer the individuals with such problems to psychologists or psychiatrists trained to help them.

While a speech therapist is not trained to help persons with severe emotional disorders, the therapist does receive extensive training in such areas as anatomy(as it relates to speech, concentrating on the diaphragm, tongue, and palate), physics(particularly relating to sound), and language and communications. Some therapists take classes in elementary psychology as well.

The speech therapist must be able to diagnose the type and severity of the speech defect, then prescribe a series of treatments. While some people with severe handicaps receive individual instruction, most patients are comfortable receiving group therapy with others who have the same problem. If a patient is found to have a physical handicap that is impeding his progress, he is sent to a doctor with whom the therapist works closely.

Many therapists have a high success rate with their patients. No scientific studies have yet shown whether the intervention of the therapist was in fact the sole cause of the improvement of the patients, or whether time and maturity helped as well. A recent study has shown that persons who have not received speech therapy have often been "cured' of their problems merely by being around others without the problem. However, that same study showed that those few persons who were not treated by therapists had extremely low self-esteem and considered themselves " different" and "retarded". The therapists often are able to make the patients see that while they are different, the difference is not of their own making, that they have not done something wrong. Therapists try to reach children when they are very young, before they have had an opportunity to be teased by other children or made to feel they are "stupid". Therapists often work with whole families, encouraging the parents and siblings to listen to the patients, taking the time to help them feel they are an important part of the family, not just brushing them off because the effort of interpreting their speech is too great or time-consuming.

Which of the following is not listed as a function of the speech therapist?

A. To diagnose the nature and severity of the defect.

B. To determine the cause of aphasia in children who are physically capable of speech.

C. To give emotional support to a child, showing her that the defect is not fault of her own.

D. To prescribe medication that will help the patient relax and use her speech muscles properly.

Dolphins have the power to make people feel better just by their presence, according to a
leading marine biologist.

"I cannot explain it in scientific terms but, without any doubt, everyone who sees them in the wild is lifted by them," Jonathan Gordon, of Oxford University Zoology Department, said.

"You only ever see them in the wild if they want you to see them. They are the only wild animal that comes to man of their own free will and that makes you feel privileged. You get a buzz because they are joyful, and you can prove scientifically that they spend a lot of their life playing."

Professor Gordon works for the International Fund for Animal Welfare and spends months on the organization's research boat. "If things aren't going well on the boat and you are depressed, the sight of dolphins lifts you and makes you feel better at once. They cannot be doing this on purpose, but I can believe that people who are intensely depressed or suffering from some kind of mental blockage could be eased by swimming among them."

"I cannot go along with those who claim they have magical powers but even though I am scientifically hardheaded I have to admit they somehow make you feel good."

That view is shared by the authors of Beyond the Blue, a book on the healing power of dolphins. The authors say that when the mind is calm it triggers the release of a chemical also found in the anti-depressant drug Valium.

Jenny Sheridan, of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, said, "Swimming with dolphins will not repair any brain damage. But if the child is suffering from lack of confidence it might help."

Mark Simmonds of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said, "The interaction of dolphin with sick children can be instrumental in recovery. No one can explain why. But the behavior. of these beautiful animals induces awe and pleasure in children."

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.the relationship between dolphins and people

B.the healing power of dolphins

C.dolphins and people's depression

D.animals and treatment of diseases

A Tale of Scottish Rural Life

Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song(1932)was voted “the best Scottish novel of all time” by Scotland's reading public in 2005. Once considered shocking for its frank description of aspens of the lives of Scotland’s poor rural farmers. It has been adapted for stage, film, TV and radio in recent decades.

The novel is set on the fictional estate of Kinraddie, in the farming country of the Scottish northwest in the years up to and beyond World War l. At its heart is the story of Chris, who is both part of the community and a little outside it.

Grassic Gibbon gives US the most detailed and intimate account of the life of his heroine(女主人公). We watch her grow through a childhood dominated by her cruel but hard-working father;experience tragedy(her mother's suicide and murder of her twin children); and learn about her feelings as she grows into a woman. We see her marry, lose her husband, then marry again. Chris has seemed so convincing a figure to some female readers that they cannot believe that she is the creation of a man.

But it would be misleading to suggest that this book is just about Chris. 1t is truly a novel of a place and its people. Its opening section tells of Kinraddie's long history, in a language that imitates the place’s changing patterns of speech and writing.

The story itself is amazingly full of characters and incidents. It is told from Chris’ point of view but also from that of the gossiping community, a community where everybody knows eye, body else’s business and nothing is ever forgotten.

Sunset Song has a social theme too. It is concerned with what Grassic Gibbon perceives as the destruction of traditional Scottish rural life first by modernization and then by World War l. Gibbon tried hard to show how certain characters resist the war. Despite this, the war takes the young men away, a number of them to their deaths. In particular, it takes away Chris’ husband, Ewan Tavendale. The war finally kills Ewan, but not in the way his widow is told. In fact, the Germans aren’t responsible for his death, but his own side. He is shot because he is said to have run away from a battle.

If the novel is about the end of one way of life it also looks ahead. It is a “Sunset Song” but is concerned too with the new Kinraddie, indeed of the new European world. Grassic Gibbon went on to publish two other novels about the place that continue its story.

36 What is Sunset Song mainly about?

A The First World War.

B The beauty of the sunset.

C The new European world.

D The lives of rural Scottish farmers.
